TikTok launches crowd-sourced debunking tool in U.S.
Footnotes, a feature that the popular video-sharing app began testing in April, allows vetted users to suggest written context for content that might be wrong or misleading, similar to Community Notes on Meta and X.
"Footnotes draws on the collective knowledge of the TikTok community by allowing people to add relevant information to content," Adam Presser, the platform's head of operations and trust and safety, said in a blog post.
"Starting today, U.S. users in the Footnotes pilot program can start to write and rate footnotes on short videos, and our US community will begin to see the ones rated as helpful, and rate them, too," he added.
TikTok said nearly 80,000 U.S.-based users, who have maintained an account for at least six months, have qualified as Footnotes contributors. The video-sharing app has some 170 million U.S. users.
TikTok said the feature will augment the platform's existing integrity measures such as labelling content that cannot be verified and partnering with fact-checking organisations, such as AFP, to assess the accuracy of posts on the platform.
The crowd-sourced verification system was popularised by Elon Musk's platform X, but researchers have repeatedly questioned its effectiveness in combating falsehoods.
Earlier this month, a study found more than 90% of X's Community Notes are never published, highlighting major limits in efficacy.
The Digital Democracy Institute of the Americas (DDIA) study analysed the entire public dataset of 1.76 million notes published by X between January 2021 and March 2025.
TikTok cautioned it may take some time for a footnote to become public, as contributors get started and become more familiar with the feature.
"The more footnotes get written and rated on different topics, the smarter and more effective the system becomes," Presser said.
Tech platforms increasingly view the community-driven model as an alternative to professional fact-checking.
Earlier this year, Meta ended its third-party fact-checking program in the United States, with chief executive Mark Zuckerberg saying it had led to "too much censorship."
The decision was widely seen as an attempt to appease U.S. President Donald Trump, whose conservative base has long complained that fact-checking on tech platforms serves to curtail free speech and censor right-wing content.
Professional fact-checkers vehemently reject the claim.
As an alternative, Zuckerberg said Meta's platforms, Facebook and Instagram, would use "Community Notes."
Studies have shown Community Notes can work to dispel some falsehoods, like vaccine misinformation, but researchers have long cautioned that it works best for topics where there is broad consensus.
Some researchers have also cautioned that Community Notes users can be motivated to target political opponents by partisan beliefs.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk shares Mars timelines once again: ‘More likely, first flight in…'
Elon Musk has once again shared a timeline of his ambitious mission to land on Mars. In a post on microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter), Musk said there's a 'slight chance' that SpaceX's Starship rocket could make its first flight to Mars with Optimus, Tesla's humanoid robot, on board as early as November or December 2026. The tech billionaire was responding to an X user's question: 'What's the timeline you have set Elon? It sounds fascinating and I am glad to be alive when this is happening'. Elon Musk replied: 'Slight chance of Starship flight to Mars crewed by Optimus in Nov/Dec next year. A lot needs to go right for that. More likely, first flight without humans in ~3.5 years, next flight ~5.5 years with humans. Mars city self-sustaining in 20 to 30 years.' Elon Musk on benefits of going to Mars In an interview earlier this year, the SpaceX CEO discussed his vision for Mars colonisation, saying that the long-term survival of humanity is making life multi-planetary. He also shared "one of the benefits of going to Mars". 'It's not about going to Mars to visit once, but it is to make life multiplanetary so that we can expand the scope and scale of consciousness to better understand the nature of the universe and to ensure the long-term survival of civilization," he said. "In the hopefully unlikely event that something terrible happens to Earth, [there could be] a continuance of consciousness on Mars. One of the benefits of Mars is life insurance for life collectively,' he added. Realme Buds T200 Review: Vibrant Sound, Sleek Design AI Masterclass for Students. Upskill Young Ones Today!– Join Now

WhatsApp deletes 6.8 million accounts linked to criminal scam centers: Meta
NEW DELHI: Instant messaging platform WhatsApp has deleted 6.8 million accounts linked to criminal scam centers that targeted people globally, its parents Meta Platforms said in a recent blog. 'In the first six months of this year, as part of our ongoing proactive work to protect people from scams, WhatsApp detected and banned over 6.8 million accounts linked to scam centers,' Meta said, adding that it proactively detected and took down accounts before scam centers were able to operationalise them. This Tuesday, the company said it is launching new tools on WhatsApp to help people spot scams, including a new safety overview that the platform will show when someone who is not in a user's contacts adds them to a group, as well as ongoing test alerts to pause before responding. Scams are increasingly becoming common, with the use of technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) adding several layers of sophistication in today's digital world. Some of the most common scam tactics include lucrative, or too-good-to-be-true offers and unsolicited messages attempting to steal information, cryptocurrency investments, and other dubious pyramid schemes. 'Some of the most prolific sources of scams are criminal scam centers, often fueled by forced labor and operated by organized crim e primarily in Southeast Asia,' said Meta, elaborating that scams may start with a text message or on a dating application, then move to social media, private messaging apps and ultimately payment or crypto platforms. 'In the course of just one scam, they often try to cycle people through many different platforms to ensure that any one service has only a limited view into the entire scam, making it more challenging to detect,' Meta said, which also owns social media platforms Facebook and Instagram. Meta further said Facebook and Instagram, along with OpenAI, recently disrupted scams efforts linked to a criminal scam center in Cambodia. Citing OpenAI, the social media giant said that the scammers used ChatGPT to generate the initial text message containing a link to a WhatsApp chat, and then quickly directed the target to Telegram where they were assigned a task of liking videos on TikTok. 'The scammers attempted to build trust in their scheme by sharing how much the target has already 'earned' in theory, before asking them to deposit money into a crypto account as the next task,' it added.

From "Reposts" To "Map": Instagram Rolls Out New Features To Enhance User Experience
Instagram has launched new features to improve users' experience and help them connect better on the social media platform. In a blog post dated August 6, 2025, Meta noted that the company has launched several new ways to help users better connect with friends. According to Meta, users can now use options like Reposts, the Map and the Friends tab in Reels, which would make it easier for friends to stay in touch. Repost Your Favourite Reels and Posts The repost feature would allow users to easily share others' content with their own followers and friends. It would be easier to share interests with friends. "Reposts will be recommended to your friends' and followers' feeds, and they'll also be in a separate tab on your profile, so you can always go back to revisit your reposts," Meta said. According to Meta, Reposts are credited to the original poster. The creator would get a boost, for example, if their content is reposted by someone else, it may be recommended to that person's followers, even if those people don't follow the creator. The creators will not get an opportunity to reach even more people. Usage of the Instagram Map A location-sharing map feature has been added, similar to Snapchat's map feature, enabling users to explore locations and see where their friends are posting from. "You can opt in to sharing your last active location with friends you choose, and you can turn it off anytime. You can also open the map to see content your friends and favourite creators are posting from interesting or fun locations. No matter how you use the map, you and your friends have a new, lightweight way to connect with each other," Meta said. What Can Be Done With Friends Tab A new Friends tab in the Reels section allows users to view videos their friends have interacted with, promoting social connectivity and engagement. "We're introducing Friends, a new tab in Reels where you can see public content your friends have interacted with, or recommendations from Blends you've started, and easily start conversations about them. Friends will help you see which reels the people you care about most are creating and engaging with. We started rolling Friends out earlier this year, and are now excited to launch it globally," Meta said. In order to access the Friends tab, tap the "Friends" tab at the top of Reels. To return to your usual Reels feed, tap the "Reels" tab. List of Some Other Recent Changes: Edits App: Instagram's video editing app, Edits, offers advanced features like teleprompters, voiceovers, and collaborative editing. AI-Generated Content: Instagram is testing AI-generated profiles, stickers, and images, providing users with more creative options. Enhanced Messaging: New DM features include customisable chat themes, message effects, vanish mode, and the ability to schedule direct messages. Content Creation: Users can now add text overlays, stickers, and custom fonts to their posts, enhancing content creation capabilities. Profile: Earlier this year, Instagram introduced a rectangular profile grid and updated profile layouts, providing a fresh and streamlined look.
