The Star11-07-2025
PUTRAJAYA: Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani will assume the duties and functions of the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister, effective immediately.
Chief Secretary to the Government and Cabinet Secretary Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, in a statement on Friday (July 11), said the matter was agreed upon by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and conveyed during the Cabinet meeting on July 9.
On May 28, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad announced his resignation as Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister, effective July 4.
Nik Nazmi, 43, said he had done his best to implement key reforms since assuming the role of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister in December 2022, and later the restructured ministry.
Among the notable achievements during his tenure were amendments to the Environmental Quality Act 1974 and enhanced transparency in the reporting of Environmental Impact Assessments.
He also cited his failure to retain the vice-president post in the recent PKR election as one of the factors that influenced his decision to step down. - Bernama

Malaysia's 13MP projects to face strict monitoring for timely completion

PUTRAJAYA: Every project under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) will undergo regular monitoring to prevent implementation delays, said Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar. The Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Economy will jointly oversee progress, submitting reports twice a year. Shamsul Azri emphasised the importance of timely execution, stating, 'This time, we will really make sure that the 13MP is implemented as planned, because it spans a long period until 2030. 'All approved projects must be implemented promptly, because any delay will cause disappointment among the people.' He added that he would personally conduct site visits and surprise inspections. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim highlighted enhanced monitoring through the Policy Implementation Plan Monitoring System (PPD) during the 13MP tabling. Infrastructure projects, including flood mitigation and affordable housing, will be prioritised. A RM20 billion allocation will fund 103 flood mitigation projects, while one million affordable homes are targeted from 2026 to 2035. Shamsul Azri also commended the 12,000 participants of the MAPPA XX 2025 Run, promoting an active lifestyle. Public Service Director-General Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz and Communications Secretary-General Datuk Seri Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa attended the event. - Bernama

Unity key to strength, prosperity: Chief Minister

Published on: Saturday, August 02, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 02, 2025 Text Size: Hajiji, accompanied by Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, flagging off the Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang at the National Month, Sabah Day and Fly the Flag Campaign 2025 launch ceremony. Kota Kinabalu: The unity of the diverse races and religions in Sabah is the key to the State's strength and prosperity, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. He urged all citizens to continue preserving the harmony enjoyed today as the most valuable legacy for future generations. 'Unity in diversity is Sabah's true strength. It is not a weakness, rather it is a uniqueness that we should be proud of and safeguard,' he said when launching the National Month, Sabah Day and Fly the Flag Campaign 2025 at The Magellan Sutera Resort, here, Friday. The Chief Minister said every individual is responsible for making places like schools, workplaces, business premises, places of worship and digital platforms to strengthen understanding, rather than sowing division. On the progress of Sabah's development, he said the achievements of the Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) 1.0 as of May 2025 showed encouraging success, with an average implementation rate reaching 94 per cent of the 467 initiatives planned. 'Among sectors that continue to be prioritised are agriculture, industry and tourism, along with efforts to enhance human capital, the peoples' wellbeing, infrastructure networks and environmental sustainability,' he said. Hajiji said various forms of assistance have also been provided to the people, including access to education and introducing the Sabah People's Protection Insurance Scheme that offers comprehensive benefits to citizens. He also urged all segments of society to fly the Jalur Gemilang everywhere, as a symbol of loyalty and love for the nation. 'Today's launch is not just a symbolic event, but a call for us to understand the true meaning of independence - not just freedom from colonisation, but also freedom from poverty and division,' he said. The National Day and Sabah Day celebration, held every August, is a historic moment that reminds the people of the struggle of their forefathers in defending the homeland and the dignity of the nation. 'As Malaysians in Sabah, we have a great responsibility to safeguard the blessings of independence and continue this legacy of struggle,' said Hajiji. The launching event was marked by the handing over of Jalur Gemilang and Sabah flags to State and Federal Government departments and agencies, representatives of associations and the launch of the Merdeka Jalur Gemilang Expedition. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? New villages welcome news on 13MP incentives

Chinese new villagers want better basic infrastructure, job opportunities and more community spaces as the Government pledges support under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had said the socio‑economic level of Chinese new villages would be strengthened through the Kampung Baru Development Master Plan, which would provide financing for entrepreneurial activities, including the preparation and upgrading of hawker sites. Lim says the Prime Minister's announcement on 13MP is encouraging. At Selangor's Seri Berjuntai New Village in Bestari Jaya, which has about 2,500 residents, village chief Chiang Yoke Leong said employment prospects were limited. 'There are more job opportunities in other towns like Ijok,' he said. On infrastructure, Chiang said that while some drainage upgrades have been carried out, those projects were 'few and far between'. He also highlighted the lack of a waste collection facility, adding that tourism had yet to take off in the village. 'Most people bypass our village, but with funding and new proposals we hope to build up some kind of cottage industry or tourist sites,' he said. Kampung Cempaka New Village chief Theresa Lim said Anwar's announcement was encouraging. 'It is good news for new villages,' she said. Lim said that while most residents in the Petaling Jaya village were senior citizens, a younger community still remained. 'There is potential for them to get some kind of funding to start a business in the village. 'As for infrastructure, the situation can be improved with better roads and proper drainage,' she said. Lim also hoped for more green spaces for the village's elderly folk.
