Romanian parliament votes in unwieldy pro-EU coalition government

Qatar Tribune24-06-2025
BudapestcTypeface:> The Romanian parliament on Monday voted a new pro-EU coalition government into office, the Mediafax news agency reported.
Both the upper and lower houses of parliament approved the coalition, which is an alliance of pro-EU centrist parties, and excludes the pro-Russian far right, which has recently gained in strength in Romania. Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan's centrist National Liberal Party (PNL) is joined by the Social Democrats (PSD), the liberal-conservative Save Romania Union (USR), the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR/RMDSZ) and parties of other ethnic groups.
According to the coalition agreement, the PNL and PSD will alternate in holding the prime minister's office, with Bolojan serving until April 2027, followed by a politician from the PSD until the end of the legislative period in December 2028. Bolojan served as caretaker president between February and May this year. He had earlier earned a reputation as a determined reformer as head of a regional council in the west of the country. (DPA)

Oil prices rise after supply concerns resurface

Agencies New York Oil prices rose on Wednesday as supply concerns are resurfacing while peace talks ending Russia's invasion of Ukraine are likely to take longer, leaving in place sanctions on Russian crude and raising the chance of further restrictions on itsbuyers. Brent crude futures were at $65.93 a barrel by 0149 GMT, up 14 cents, or 0.21 percent. US West Texas Intermediate crude futures for September delivery, set to expire on Wednesday, rose 37 cents to $62.72 a barrel, up 0.59 percent. The more-active October contract was at $61.92 a barrel, up 15 cents. Prices settled down more than 1 percent on Tuesday on optimism a deal to end the war seemed closer, which would mean the easing sanctions on Russia and an increase in global supply. However, despite comments from US President Donald Trump on Tuesday the US might provide air support as part of a deal to end Russia's war in the country, he also conceded Russian President Vladimir Putin might not want to make a deal after all. Trump on Monday said he was arranging a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelenskiy, to be followed by a trilateral summit among the three presidents. Trump said on Tuesday he discussed holding possible talks between Zelenskiy and Putin in Hungary with the country's Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Russia has not confirmed it will take part in talks with Zelenskiy. 'The likelihood of a quick resolution to the conflict with Russia now seems unlikely,' said Daniel Hynes, senior commodity strategist at ANZ, in a note on Wednesday. In the US, BP said on Tuesday operations at its 440,000-barrel-per-day refinery in Whiting, Indiana, were affected due to flooding caused by a severe thunderstorm overnight, potentially weighing on the facility's crude demand. The site is a key fuel producer for the Midwest market.

NATO sends two fighter jets after Russian weapons approach Romania

BerlincTypeface:> NATO scrambled two German Eurofighter jets in response to Russian airstrikes near Ukraine's border with Romania overnight into Wednesday. The jets were activated after Russian weapons systems approached Romanian airspace. Ultimately they did not cross into what is also NATO airspace. The jets, which took off from the Romanian military airbase Mihail Kogalniceanu near Constanta, returned without incident. This marked the first alert of a new mission there. The German Air Force is participating in armed patrol flights to secure the NATO alliance's south-eastern flank. The operation involves five Eurofighters and approximately 170 soldiers, providing military capabilities that Romania does not sufficiently possess on its own. The German fighter jets are part of a quick reaction alert unit stationed on-site, ready to deploy around the clock. (DPA)

Germany leaves Moscow, Kiev to decide summit venue as Budapest mooted

Jakarta: German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said on Wednesday it was up to Moscow and Kiev to decide where Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky might meet as speculation swirled that Budapest will be the venue. 'The discussions, including the procedure, are being shaped by Russia and Ukraine, not by the German foreign minister from Jakarta,' he told journalists while in the Indonesian capital. US President Donald Trump, who last week met Putin in Alaska and then hosted Zelensky and European leaders in Washington on Monday, is also expected to attend any summit between the pair. The US Secret Service, responsible for Trump's security, is already making preparations for a trip to Budapest, according to the website Politico. Switzerland had previously said it was prepared to host the possible talks on ending the war in Ukraine despite the arrest warrant issued against Putin by the International Criminal Court (ICC).
