We just got our first glimpse of AMD's RX 9060 XT, but many questions remain

The start of the year was littered with some of the best graphics cards (although, admittedly, they weren't really up for grabs due to the state of the market). Now, it's time for the mainstream GPUs to make an appearance. AMD's RX 9060 XT is one such GPU that many gamers are waiting for, and we just spotted it in a retail listing, indicating the launch might not be too far off.
Spotted by VideoCardz, the GPU broke cover at a Brazilian retailer, Terabyteshop. The Gigabyte AMD Radeon RX 9060 Gaming OC was the only model listed, but it came with an official-looking AMD blurb and a spec sheet, although the most important detail was missing: The price. First, let's dig into what we do know, and then we can discuss what we still need to learn.

The RX 9060 XT comes with 16GB of GDDR6 memory, and although the spec sheet failed to mention that, most leakers expect a narrow 128-bit bus. The maximum resolution is listed as 7,680 x 4,320, with support for up to four displays. The card supports DirectX 12 and OpenGL 4.6, comes with two DisplayPort 2.1a and two HDMI 2.1a connectors, and uses only a single 8-pin power connector. Despite that fact, the spec sheet still calls for a power requirement of 850 watts, which sounds way overkill for a graphics card of this caliber, so we could be dealing with a mistake in the specifications.
Of course, until the card is officially released, we can't take these specs at face value — but this source seems pretty legitimate, so a lot of it might be true. With that said, we're still dealing with a bunch of question marks. For starters, what's the memory interface like? What's the maximum clock speed? Most of all, how much will this GPU cost?
AMD's RX 9070 XT struck a goldmine by offering great value for the money. Unfortunately, once the initial stock of MSRP-priced GPUs was all sold out, the card drastically increased in price. If AMD can offer a steady supply of the RX 9060 XT at around $300 or below, it could be a hit, but the 'steady supply' part of it all is what I'm worried about.
AMD has yet to officially launch the card. Rumor has it that the RX 9060 XT will be officially announced on May 21 during Computex 2025.

Cherney SAN JOSE (Reuters) -Advanced Micro Devices has forged close ties to a batch of artificial intelligence startups as part of the company's effort to bolster its software and forge superior chip designs. As AI companies seek alternatives to Nvidia's chips, AMD has begun to expand its plans to build a viable competing line of hardware, acquiring companies such as server maker ZT Systems in its quest to achieve that goal. But to build a successful line of chips also requires a powerful set of software to efficiently run the programs built by AI developers. AMD has acquired several small software companies in recent weeks in a bid to boost its talent, and it has been working to beef up its set of software, broadly known as ROCm. "This will be a very thoughtful, deliberate, multi-generational journey for us," said Vamsi Boppana, senior vice president of AI at AMD. AMD has committed to improve its ROCm and other software, which is a boon to customers such as AI enterprise startup Cohere, as it results in speedy changes and the addition of new features. Cohere is focused on building AI models that are tailored for large businesses versus the foundational AI models that companies like OpenAI and others target. AMD has made important strides in improving its software, Cohere CEO Aidan Gomez said in an interview with Reuters. Changing Cohere's software to run on AMD chips was a process that previously took weeks and now happens in only "days," Gomez said. Gomez declined to disclose exactly how much of Cohere's software relies on AMD chips but called it a "meaningful segment of our compute base" around the world. OPENAI INFLUENCE OpenAI has had significant influence on the design of the forthcoming MI450 series of AI chips, said Forrest Norrod, an executive vice president at AMD. AMD's MI400 series of chips will be the basis for a new server called "Helios" that the company plans to release next year. Nvidia too has engineered whole servers in part because AI computations require hundreds or thousands of chips strung together. OpenAI's Sam Altman appeared on stage at AMD's Thursday event in San Jose, and discussed the partnership between the two companies in broad terms. Norrod said that OpenAI's requests had a big influence on how AMD designed the MI450 series memory architecture and how the hardware can scale up to thousands of chips necessary to build and run AI applications. The ChatGPT creator also influenced what kinds of mathematical operations the chips are optimized for. AMD's MI350 Series has achieved a 38-fold improvement in energy efficiency, surpassing its five-year target, and the company has set a new goal for 2030 to achieve a 20-fold increase in rack-scale energy efficiency, according to the company. Additionally, the company has introduced the AMD Developer Cloud to support developers in AI projects. AMD chair and CEO Dr Lisa Su said: 'AMD is driving AI innovation at an unprecedented pace, highlighted by the launch of our AMD Instinct MI350 series accelerators, advances in our next generation AMD 'Helios' rack-scale solutions, and growing momentum for our ROCm open software stack. The company unveiled its latest AI accelerators, 'the AMD Instinct MI350 Series' which promise a 4x generational performance leap and are already being rolled out in large-scale cloud deployments, including Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. AMD Chair and CEO Dr. Lisa Su delivered the keynote alongside executives from Meta, Microsoft, Oracle, and OpenAI, showcasing how AMD's integrated platform spanning GPUs, CPUs, networking, and open software is helping power some of the world's most advanced AI applications. Currently, seven of the ten largest AI customers are deploying AMD Instinct Accelerators, underscoring the company's growing leadership in the space. AMD also emphasised sustainability with a significant energy efficiency milestone. The MI350 Series has surpassed AMD's earlier five-year goal of a 30x energy efficiency gain achieving a 38x improvement in AI training and high-performance computing nodes. AMD is now setting a new 2030 goal: a 20x increase in rack-scale energy efficiency from 2024 levels, aiming to reduce power consumption by 95 per cent.
