NEW DELHI: Congress Friday lashed out at BJP for appointing N Ramchander Rao as its Telangana president, asking if the party has rewarded him for "his leading role" in the "institutional murder" of Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula in 2016.
Congress demanded BJP withdraw the appointment and apologise to the country.
Deputy CM Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu said Rao had taken "goons" to Hyderabad University and forced authorities to file a false case against Vemula, leading to harassment that ended with his suicide. Same time, Vikramarka said BJP has appointed M Susheel Kumar, who as a key ABVP member was allegedly involved in Vemula's harassment, as assistant professor in DU.
Vikramarka also announced Congress govt had moved HC seeking a directive to reopen the Vemula case. The move comes nearly three months after
Rahul Gandhi
asked CM Revanth Reddy to enact a law against caste discrimination named after Vemula.

CM Mann running 'circus' instead of a government, says Punjab BJP working chief

Chandigarh: Ashwani Sharma, the newly appointed working president of the Punjab BJP, on Sunday, launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, accusing him of running a "circus" instead of a government over the past three years and four months. After assuming the charge amid the presence of State BJP President Sunil Jakhar, Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu, State BJP National Secretary Narinder Singh Raina and BJP Rajya Sabha MP Satnam Singh Sandhu, Sharma, who is the legislator from Pathankot, accused Chief Minister Mann of diverting state's attention from core issues by raising trivial matters like "circus performers" distract people from real-life challenges. He questioned why CM Mann, despite convening a special Assembly session on sacrilege, had failed to deliver on Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Chief Arvind Kejriwal's promise on January 12, 2022, of ensuring justice within 30 days in sacrilege cases, including Bargari, through fast-track courts. To obscure the AAP's failure to fulfill its key election pledge of eliminating drugs within 30 days of assuming power, CM Mann launched 'Yudh Nshe Virudh' as a diversionary tactic. "When an AAP MLA accused Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha of having links to the drug trade, CM Mann again attempted to shift focus by declaring this so-called 'war'," he said. Similarly, Sharma alleged that Mann staged a "circus" around corruption to avoid answering why no action has been taken against the four senior Congress leaders he accused of graft in the Punjab Assembly. Sharma, 61, is a veteran party leader and served as the State BJP President twice -- from February 2010 to January 2013 and January 2020 to July 2023. Last week, he was appointed as BJP's Punjab unit working president. On the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) issue, Sharma claimed Mann's government has neglected Punjab's interests by failing to fill the state's reservation of 2,550 posts in the BBMB over the past three years. Instead of addressing this the state government has repeatedly raised the issue of central security forces' deployment in NITI Aayog meetings, passing resolutions in Cabinet and Assembly sessions, the State BJP Working President said. He added that objections should have been raised in BBMB board meetings to halt the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) deployment at the Bhakra-Nangal dam project. Amid widespread protests by farmers and the BJP against land pooling, CM Mann called another special Assembly session as another attempt, Sharma alleged, to divert the public attention. Law and order in Punjab have deteriorated sharply, with gangsters operating with impunity, the State BJP Working President said. "Traders face extortion threats, daylight murders occur, women's jewelry is snatched in broad daylight, custodial deaths are reported, and fake encounter allegations arise," he added. "Yet," Sharma said, "Chief Minister Mann remains preoccupied with his 'circus' to evade accountability." "Bhagwant Mann seems to have forgotten he is no longer a stage performer but holds a constitutional office, the Chief Ministership of Punjab," Sharma remarked. He concluded with a stern warning: "The Punjab BJP will respond in the same language Mann uses, but four times louder, on the streets."

Mahadevappa holds preparatory meeting of Sadhana Samavesha in Mysuru

Minister in charge of Mysuru district H.C. Mahadevappa took part in a preparatory meeting of 'Sadhana Samavesha' here on Saturday. Sadhana Samavesha will be held on Maharaja's College Grounds on July 19, and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is expected to launch a series of developmental programmes and lay foundation stone for various works on the occasion. 'The State and national leaders of the Congress will be taking part in it,' Mr. Mahadevappa said, adding that the event will be attended by thousands of people. The Sadhana Samavesha comes at a time when the political debate over change of leadership in Karnataka has peaked amid shadowboxing between Mr. Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. Mr. Mahadevappa called upon the partymen at the meeting to ensure that the programme is organised in a systematic manner with proper seating arrangements for dignitaries and the public. He said that separate entry and exit gates for the public, drinking water, toilet, food, and transport facilities should be ensured. Mr. Mahadevappa told the meeting to make Sadhana Samavesha a grand success. Former Ministers Tanveer Sait and C. Puttarangashetty, MLAs A.R. Krishnamurthy, Harish Gowda, Anil Chikkamadu, MLC D. Thimmaian, former MLA H.P. Manjunath, M.K. ‘Mistakes of the past': Kiren Rijiju invokes citizenship debate with 90s Chanakya clip; hits out over Bihar voter roll row

. NEW DELHI: Union minister Kiren Rijiju on Sunday took a sharp dig at the Congress party by sharing a fiery scene from Doordarshan's iconic 90s TV show Chanakya. The video shows a heated debate in an ancient council of Chandragupta Maurya on whether refugees should be granted shelter. He captioned the clip: 'Seeing Congress party support illegal infiltrators reminded me of this scene. Mistakes committed more than 2000 years back. We can't allow illegal migrants in our voter list,' he wrote, referring to the ongoing electoral roll revision in Bihar and opposition criticism led by the Congress. Ironically, the Mauryan Empire — the backdrop of Chanakya's council debates — was rooted in ancient Bihar itself. In the video clip, a fierce council debate unfolds with one courtier saying, "Sharan dena ya na dena aapke maanvi drishtikon par nirbhar karta hai" (Whether or not to grant asylum depends on your humanitarian perspective), while others warn of dire consequences, arguing, "Kal yehi sharnarthi Takshashila ki bhoomi par adhikaar ka daava karenge" (Tomorrow, these refugees will claim rights over our land). The BJP has often leaned on historical and cultural imagery to frame its politics, invoking ancient texts and reclaiming historical figures to bolster its ideological messaging. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Đây có thể là thời điểm tốt nhất để giao dịch vàng trong 5 năm qua IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo The party has taken a hard line on migration, linking it to national security. In states like West Bengal, the party accuses the Mamta Banerjee government of enabling illegal entry. Earlier this year, Union home minister Amit Shah alleged that the Mamata Banerjee-led government was 'showing mercy to infiltrators' and deliberately stalling border fencing efforts — a move he claimed was putting the country's security at risk. The current BJP government, however, passed the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in 2019 to fast-track naturalisation for refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. The move triggered widespread protests, with critics calling it discriminatory for excluding Muslims. India is not a signatory to the 1951 UN Refugee Convention or its 1967 Protocol, and has no national refugee law, leaving most such decisions to government's discretion. Meanwhile, India is also facing the brunt of anti-migrant policies abroad. With US president Donald Trump's crackdown on immigration, the country now risks losing billions of dollars in remittances.
