JNU admin, students spar over meeting invites as hunger strike completes day 4

New Delhi [India], June 30 (ANI): The JNU administration and Students' Union (JNUSU) are at loggerheads over the stakeholders' meeting invite list, even as the students' indefinite hunger strike completes its fourth day on Monday.
The protest is set to enter its fifth day on Tuesday.
The student body has requested that all stakeholders meet over the demand to reinstate the JNU Entrance Examination (JNUEE) for PhD admissions, as well as a rollback of the university's decision to bar June 2025 UGC-NET aspirants.
Vice Chancellor Santishree D. Pandit, in a letter to the students, said the meeting-- originally scheduled for July 1-- stands postponed as several stakeholders would only be available after July 2.
While agreeing to an all-stakeholders meeting, she insisted that if JNUTA (JNU Teachers' Association) is invited, then equal representation must be given to JNUTF (JNU Teachers' Federation) as well, since there are 'two teachers' bodies.'
'It is your organisation, JNUSU, and your responsibility to be inclusive. If you want JNUTA, then I will have to invite JNUTF too,' she wrote.
This triggered sharp opposition from JNUSU, which accused the administration of selectively legitimising JNUTF--a teachers' group the union describes as aligned with the RSS--while sidelining recognised academic bodies. 'JNUTA is the recognised teachers' union and a permanent invitee to the Academic Council. JNUTF is just an organisation,' the union said in a letter sent Monday evening.
Reacting to the development, JNUSU President Nitish Kumar told ANI, 'The administration wants to involve JNUTF, which is an RSS-linked teachers' body. We have asked for an all-stakeholders meeting, and from the teachers' end, JNUTA already represents them. Why especially include JNUTF?' He added that the strike will continue until all demands are met.
The union further claimed that the administration's insistence on inviting the Joint Secretary of JNUSU, who has not participated in the JNUEE movement, appears to be an attempt to delay dialogue and cater to 'certain political interests.'
'This deadlock is being deliberately prolonged to avoid addressing the legitimate concerns of the students,' the JNUSU office bearers--Nitish Kumar (President), Manisha (Vice-President), and Munteha Fatima (General Secretary)--wrote.
They reiterated their four key demands: reinstatement of the JNU Entrance Examination (JNUEE), rollback of CUET/NET-based admissions, university-led conduct of JNUEE with logistical and financial support, and filling of vacant seats along with resolution of academic delays.
The union also reminded the administration that three weeks ago, it had shared the results of a student referendum that overwhelmingly supported the return of JNUEE, but received no response.
'The student community is deeply concerned that these tactics are part of a larger effort to delegitimise JNUSU and weaken the students' movement. However, students remain resolute in their demand for justice and transparency,' the union said. (ANI)

Last Updated: A strong south Indian face for the BJP with a long RSS association, Maharashtra governor CP Radhakrishnan is a former Tamil Nadu unit chief and is seen as a Modi-Shah confidant Billed as a strong South Indian face for the BJP, Maharashtra governor CP Radhakrishnan – the NDA's vice-presidential candidate – is known to have a long association with the RSS. Radhakrishnan, who is a former Tamil Nadu BJP president, was nominated by his party's parliamentary board on Sunday. He is seen as a confidant of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Having a clean image and a strong grassroots connect only further his case as the BJP continues its dogged pursuit of gaining ground deeper south, particularly over Tamil Nadu and Kerala, which are scheduled to go polls next year. Announcing the nomination, BJP president JP Nadda said the decision was made at a meeting chaired by Modi after an extensive deliberation. He said Radhakrishnan is considered a statesman and commands respect in all sections of society in Tamil Nadu. The vice-presidential election, necessitated by the resignation of incumbent Jagdeep Dhankhar last month, is scheduled for September 9. The last date for filing nomination is August 22. Radhakrishnan has a bachelor's degree in business administration and started as an RSS swayamsevak, following which he became a state executive committee member of the Bharatiya Janasangh in 1974. He is a two-time MP from Coimbatore (1998 and 1999) and won with massive vote margins. During his stint as the Tamil Nadu BJP president from 2004 to 2007, he undertook a 93-day statewide yatra. He was also incharge of the Kerala BJP unit from 2020 to 2022) as a member of BJP national executive. When it comes to governance, he became the governor of Maharashtra in July 2024. Before that, he was the governor of Jharkhand in 2023. He also held additional charge of Telangana and Puducherry. He was the chairman of the Coir Board from 2016 to 2020, helping boost India's coir exports. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. 'Tamil Nadu outreach': BJP names Maharashtra Governor P. Radhakrishnan as NDA's Vice Presidential candidate

The BJP on Sunday announced Maharashtra Governor Chandrapuram Ponnuswamy Radhakrishnan as the National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) candidate for the Vice-Presidential election, after a meeting of the party's parliamentary board chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. BJP President J.P. Nadda, addressing a press conference after the meeting, said the party had held discussions with allies and several opposition parties over the past week. "We hope the Vice President's election will take place through consensus. We have spoken to many parties, and while the opposition said they would decide after our announcement, we are hopeful of wider support," he told reporters. The decision to field Radhakrishnan, a seasoned politician with long-standing ties to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), is being viewed as a strategic outreach to Tamil Nadu, where Assembly elections are due next year. Born on October 20, 1957, in Tamil Nadu's Tiruppur, Radhakrishnan was drawn to the RSS during his teenage years. In his early days, he had already become an active member, shaping his political grounding in the Sangh Parivar's ideology. He rose through the ranks of the BJP, serving as the party's Tamil Nadu state President from 2004 to 2007, a period marked by attempts to expand the BJP's footprint in the Dravidian heartland. Radhakrishnan assumed charge as Governor of Maharashtra on July 31, 2024, after a stint as Governor of Jharkhand (February 2023–July 2024). He was also entrusted with additional responsibilities as the Governor of Telangana (March–July 2024) and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry (March–August 2024). The BJP's choice underscores the party's effort to position a Tamil face at the national level ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls in Tamil Nadu. With his deep RSS roots and administrative experience, Radhakrishnan's nomination signals the NDA's intent to strengthen its southern strategy.

Rahul Gandhi should apologise for making baseless allegations against RSS: BJP

Telangana BJP demanded Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to apologise for his remarks on RSS and for making baseless allegations against the organisation. Party vice president and former MLA N.V.S.S. Prabhakar claimed that even Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, grand father of Mr. Rahul Gandhi, himself had appreciated the self-less services of RSS during India-China war while addressing the nation during the 1963 Republic Day celebrations. Dr. Ambedkar too had attended a RSS programme at Karad of Satara district on January 2, 1940 and written in a book stating that RSS is a patriotic organization while Mahatma Gandhi had attended RSS camp and Sakha in 1934 at Vardha and in Delhi on September 16, 1947 describing RSS as a 'disciplined organization', he claimed. Therefore, the BJP leader has advised Mr. Gandhi to read Indian history properly before making objectionable comments. In a separate statement, party spokespersons N.V. Subash also criticised Mr. Gandhi for the 'reckless and irresponsible' accusations against the Election Commission of India (ECI), terming them as a 'deliberate attempt to erode public trust in a constitutionally mandated institution'. Despite repeated clarifications from the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar that no eligible voter will be deleted during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, the Opposition continues to peddle falsehoods. The BJP leader accused Mr. Gandhi of 'leading an endless drama' designed not to protect voters but to malign the credibility of the Election Commission. Neither the EC nor the voters will be cowed down by such 'manufactured slander', since credibility people of India have faith in free and fair elections, he added.
