Ginger cultivation brings new spice of life to Kota Tinggi farmers

Villagers in Kota Tinggi, Johor, are investing in ginger cultivation as a high-value crop to bolster local food security.
While farming ginger might seem straightforward, first-time ginger farmer Mihat Mohad described it as a 'sensitive plant.'
His dedication to ginger farming is driven by the aspiration for Kota Tinggi to develop its own unique species.
'We hope that eventually, we can cultivate our very own Kota Tinggi ginger species and transform it into a reliable source of income for the local community,' he explained.
Mihat's vision is grounded in the work of Universiti Putra Malaysia's (UPM) Institute of Tropical Agriculture and Food Security (ITAFoS) consulting fellow Dr Hawa Jaafar.
She has worked out a plan to develop a ginger species suited to Kota Tinggi's unique conditions.
'Our long-term goal is to develop a ginger species adapted to Kota Tinggi's conditions.
'It will take two to three planting cycles for the crop to stabilise and adapt to local conditions, but we are confident it can be done,' she said when met at a ginger farm in Kampung Gembut, Sedili.
Since joining a Bentong ginger planting initiative in October last year, Mihat, from Kampung Tuan Seh, discovered that ginger was prone to disease, with dark spots forming if not properly managed.

'You need the right temperature, fertiliser and drainage.
'Even though I have been farming vegetables for the past seven years, ginger farming is quite new to me.
'What is interesting about Bentong ginger is that the leaves emit a light and fragrant ginger aroma,' said the 43-year-old.
He said participants in a ginger cultivation programme organised for Kota Tinggi folk, underwent two training courses where UPM's experts and Johor Agriculture Department officers shared knowledge and best practices to help in their ginger cultivation journey.
Mihat joined the programme under the umbrella of Koperasi Wawasan Tuan Seh Tanjung Sedili Kota Tinggi Bhd where he is the secretary.
The cooperative managed to plant 1,200 ginger plants since last October, making it among the highest yield in the programme.
The crops are planted in stages to allow for staggered harvests and steady income, said Mihat.
'Young Bentong ginger is harvested after six months. It fetches a higher market price.
'We sell it for RM40 per kg, which is higher compared to ginger imported from China, Indonesia and Thailand.
'It can be used as medicine, in cooking or even consumed raw. Our hope is to one day sell it beyond Kota Tinggi,' he added.
The ginger cultivation programme, spearheaded by UPM, involved 30 participants from seven villages in Kota Tinggi.
Hawa said the programme's participants were monitored, with about 5,000 ginger plants being cultivated to date.
She said the initiative aimed to reduce Malaysia's reliance on imported ginger, which made up more than 80% of supply based on data from 2022 to 2023.
Hawa, who has over two decades of experience working with herbs including kacip fatimah, also sits on the Malaysian Herbal Monograph committee – a project involving various agencies working to promote Malaysian medicinal plants and grow the country's herbal industry.
Highlighting the many health benefits of ginger, she said, 'It is rich in antioxidants and phytochemicals, which give it disease-preventing and anti- inflammatory properties.
'It can boost immunity and help fight infections.
'A simple way to enjoy it is to slice it thinly, steep in hot water, add honey and drink, daily.'
Hawa said the project was about more than just increasing agricultural output.
'Our vision is to create opportunities for the less privileged, especially single mothers and the poor, so they can earn an income through farming.
'Beyond planting, we are also encouraging downstream activities such as producing ginger powder, which commands a higher market price.'
She said the project received support from Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, who is Kota Tinggi MP.
The minister launched a young Bentong ginger harvesting programme in Kampung Gembut on June 21, where he said locally grown ginger had the potential to penetrate the international market due to its unique features such as strong aroma, distinct spice level and less fibrous pulp.
'With support from the community and government leaders, we hope this initiative can be expanded to other parts of Johor and even nationwide,' Hawa added. — By YEE XIANG YUN

SHAH ALAM – Constant parental distraction by phones and digital devices may be eroding children's ability to develop empathy, experts warn. The lack of deep emotional engagement during early childhood, a crucial stage for learning compassion, could leave youngsters more self-focused and prone to aggression. According to Dr Wan Munira Wan Jaafar, a senior lecturer at the Department of Social and Development Sciences, Faculty of Human Ecology, Universiti Putra Malaysia, many Malaysian parents today are caught in the grip of 'FOMO' (Fear of Missing Out), feeling the need to constantly check social media, and engage in 'phubbing'; the act of snubbing someone in favor of a phone. 'In sociological terms, Symbolic Interactionism explains how children develop meaning and social cues through face-to-face interaction; when these are replaced by distracted, partial attention, children miss opportunities to learn empathy and emotional reciprocity. 'Social Learning Theory further suggests that when parents model detachment and screen-preoccupation, children may normalise such behaviors and replicate them with peers,' she said when contacted recently. Munira further warned that over time, this lack of deep emotional exchange at home can lead children to become more self-focused, less attuned to others' feelings, and in some cases, more prone to aggressive or bullying behavior. She also pointed out the breakdown of traditional social bonds such as at home, in schools, and in communities do play a significant role in the rise of bullying among youth. 'In Malaysia's past, strong family ties, close teacher–student relationships, and the 'kampung spirit' of communal responsibility meant children were closely guided and corrected by multiple layers of authority and care,' she said. She noted that today, urbanisation, busy dual-income households, and weaker neighborhood networks mean less adult presence and fewer opportunities for young people to develop empathy, respect, and conflict-resolution skills. From a sociological standpoint, Munira explained that Social Disorganization Theory posits that when the institutions and social bonds that uphold order weaken, deviant behaviours such as bullying are more likely to emerge. Similarly, Control Theory argues that strong bonds to family, school, and community act as a restraint on harmful behavior; when these bonds erode, youth may feel less accountable for their actions. Photo: Canva 'Without these traditional support systems reinforcing pro-social values, aggressive behavior can flourish both online and offline,' she said. Meanwhile, Manipal University College Malaysia Criminologist Nadiah Syariani Md Shariff highlighted that without proper guidance, children lack the ability to tell if the behaviours are good or not, therefore, if the imitated behaviours serve the child, these behaviours are most likely to remain and reinforce as they learn that it works or help them to get what they want. Nadiah noted that violent media serves as modelling behaviours for children viewing, and many researches have found that frequent or repeated exposure to such content is likely to nurture aggression tendency within children by two-fold (can refer to Bobo-Doll Experiment about social learning in children). 'Children initially imitate the aggressive act from the media without knowing the possible impact of the action to them or others. 'If the act serves them, in most cases they do in making others comply, they learnt that would be the ideal response especially when conflict arises,' she told Sinar Daily. Nadiah stressed that social media content is highly influential and unlike the past decade, youngsters nowadays are very much engaged in technology where most of their first-hand information is retrieved from the Internet. She said that everything they learnt is mainly from the internet, therefore, if aggressive content such as bullying is repetitively appearing on their social media feed, this would desensitise youngsters to the act of bullying, and distort the perception of harm and consequences of bullying, making the act more readily adapted and imitated. Nadiah also added that these toxic contents are easily and widely accessible online. Observing violent media is one, the dynamics of the online environment is another factor in escalating bullying tendency. 'For example, the algorithm in social media is tailored to personal preferences or previous view, further suggesting similar contents appearing repetitively, as if constantly 'feeding' the mind towards acceptance of pro-delinquent norms and values,' she said. Online trends, she added, are meant to reach a wider audience, and it can also create a sense of attraction or competition which is further validated through likes, comments and shares. Without much self-control or self-restraints, it becomes difficult for youngsters to resist the temptation or fear from missing out. Nadiah emphasised that aggressive behaviour, including bullying, is learned through observation and imitation. 'Bullying behaviours are learned, whether online or offline. Learning at a young age is through the 'monkey see, monkey do' model and this usually takes place through observation of surroundings or during interaction with others, which is followed by imitation of the behaviours. 'These observed behaviours, whether good or bad, can be displayed or modelled by parents, peers, adults, or through media,' she said.

Malaysia wins double gold at 65th International Quran Recitation Contest

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia achieved a historic double triumph at the 65th International Al-Quran Recitation and Memorisation Assembly (MTHQA), securing top honours in both the men's and women's Tilawah categories. Aiman Ridhwan Mohamad Ramlan claimed the men's qari title with an impressive score of 97.01%, outperforming competitors from Indonesia and Turkey. Wan Sofea Aini Wan Mohd Zahidi brought equal pride to the nation by winning the women's qariah division with 95.88%, leaving reciters from Morocco and Indonesia in her wake. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim presented awards during the closing ceremony at Kuala Lumpur's World Trade Centre, attended by prominent religious and political figures. The memorisation categories saw international participants shine, with Germany's Usamah Barghouth leading the men's division at 98.25% and Syria's Tasneem Arian Omar topping the women's section with 97.5%. Malaysian contestant Putri Auni Khadijah secured second place in women's memorisation with 96.75%, demonstrating the country's strong Quranic tradition across competition formats. Winners in both Tilawah and Memorisation categories received RM40,000 cash prizes alongside jewellery from YaPEIM and commemorative certificates. SHAH ALAM: Fifty Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) students participated in the Kampung Angkat MADANI @ Jiwa Putra Programme in Kampung Sawah Sempadan, Tanjong Karang. The three-day initiative was organised by UPM's Co-Curriculum and Student Development Centre (PKPP). It involved 25 foster families and activities like agricultural workshops, entrepreneurship sessions, tree planting, and local product exhibitions. PKPP director Assoc Prof Dr Mohd Mursyid Arshad highlighted the university's role in supporting community development. 'This programme reinforces UPM's commitment to staying relevant to societal needs,' he said in a statement. The university also hosted PUTRA MADANI, a 30-hour live podcast discussing agriculture, community issues, and the Malaysia MADANI concept. Mohd Mursyid said the podcast served as an informal yet effective communication tool for government aspirations. 'We aim to promote the MADANI spirit of unity, progress, and new opportunities,' he added. Amira Farhana Sallehuddin, a Human Development student, joined the programme during her semester break. She appreciated the chance to gain new insights, attend motivational sessions, and participate in gotong-royong activities. Block AGH Village Development and Security Committee chairman Zam Zaidi praised UPM's impact on the community. He noted that the podcast introduced villagers to digital platforms for product promotion and eco-tourism.
