NEW DELHI: The central government's plan to divert surplus water from the three western rivers of the Indus system in Jammu and Kashmir to Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan has sparked a sharp war of words among leaders of the northern states.
Speaking of the 113 km-long canal proposed for redirecting surplus water to lower riparian states, Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah objected to water diversion to Punjab and said he would "never permit" the allocation.
"I will never permit this. Let us use our water for ourselves first... There is a drought-like situation in Jammu. Why should I send water to Punjab? Punjab already had water under the
Indus Water Treaty
. Did they give us water when we needed it?" J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah told the news agency ANI.
Abdullah's statement did not sit well with the ally Congress, as Punjab MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa voiced his disappointment over the remark.
"By giving statements like this, he should not demean patriotism. During Operation Sindoor, Pakistanis attacked Punjab more than Jammu and Kashmir. As long as the patriotism of Punjab and its farmers remains strong, India will remain strong... I am very disappointed with his statement," said Congress MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa.

Last week, home minister Amit Shah announced that Indus waters would be brought to Rajasthan's Sri Ganganagar through canals "within three years," adding that the expanded irrigation network would benefit large parts of the country while Pakistan would be left "craving for every drop of water."
Sources familiar with the development said the proposed Chenab-Ravi-Beas-Sutlej link is being designed to integrate with existing canal systems at 13 locations across Jammu, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, ultimately channelling water to the Indira Gandhi Canal (Sutlej-Beas).

Replace India's national flag with a saffron flag: Veteran BJP leader N Sivarajan

PALAKKAD: Inviting widespread outrage, likely to escalate political debate in days to come, veteran BJP leader and former National Council member N Sivarajan made a controversial call to replace India's national flag with a saffron flag. The incident occurred during a public protest organised by the BJP at the Anchuvilakku Junction in Palakkad, where the party accused both the LDF and UDF of insulting 'Bharat Mata'. During the protest, Sivarajan, who is the BJP sitting councillor in Palakkad municipality, stated that political parties should be prohibited from using flags resembling the national tricolour. Targeting the Congress and NCP, he further said they should adopt distinct flags -- suggesting that the Congress would use a green flag. Sivarajan went on to say that Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, who he alleged were ignorant of Indian history, could instead fly the Italian flag.

'Power over principles will backfire,' warns ex-Gujarat minister Nanubhai as he slams BJP's changing culture

AHMEDABAD: Former Education Minister Nanubhai Vanani has launched a sharp attack on the BJP's internal culture, warning that 'gaining power by sidelining principles' could backfire. Despite the BJP's record-breaking win in the 2022 Gujarat Assembly elections with 156 seats and its grip over all 8 municipal corporations, Vanani has raised alarm. In a strongly worded letter, he questioned the means by which the party is securing power, saying people should not feel cheated after three decades of loyalty. His statement strikes at the heart of BJP's current political strategy in Gujarat. In a scathing seven-page letter titled 'The Very Formula That Led to Congress's Downfall Now Threatens the BJP Too,' Nanubhai Vanani delivers a blistering critique of his own party, warning that the BJP is treading the same self-destructive path once taken by the Congress. Senior BJP leader and former Education Minister Nanubhai Vanani has accused his own party of abandoning its ideological core in blind pursuit of power. 'The entire culture of the Bharatiya Janata Party has changed,' Vanani wrote, warning that the party is now driven by a ruthless mantra: "Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikandar." But, he asks, 'Where have these Sikandars come from? What's their ideology, what's their morality—does anyone even care anymore?' Vanani claims that the BJP is recruiting leaders with no connection to its values, thereby eroding its foundational ideology. 'This reckless induction is not just weakening us—it's destroying the very spirit that built this party,' he warned. He added that the BJP's growing tilt toward power-centric ideology is not only dangerous but suicidal. 'Power means nothing if it's gained by dumping principles. True power lies in winning with principles at the core,' he emphasized.

Bihar govt increases old age, widow pension by Rs 700 per month

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday said his government has decided to increase the pensions of senior citizens, widows and people with disability by Rs 700 per month. The beneficiaries will get enhanced pensions of Rs 1,100 from July, he said. 'I am happy to inform you that under the Social Security Pension Scheme, all the elderly, disabled and widowed women will now get a pension of Rs 1,100, instead of Rs 400 every month. All the beneficiaries will get a pension at the increased rate from July,' Kumar said on X. The pension amount will be sent to the accounts of all beneficiaries on the 10th day of every month, he said. 'This decision of the government will help beneficiaries and will ensure they lead a dignified and socially secure life, which is the top priority of the government. Social security is recognised as a vital component of the development process,' Social Welfare Department Secretary Bandana Preyashi told PTI. The total number of beneficiaries for the pension scheme in the state is over 1.09 crore, the CM said. 'The elderly people are an important part of society, and their dignified living is our top priority. The state government will continue to make efforts in this direction,' the chief minister said. The decision assumes significance as the state will go to the assembly polls in a few months. The increase in pension will result in an additional burden of around Rs 3594.42 crore annually on the state exchequer, an official said on the condition of anonymity. Earlier, the government was spending Rs 5,405.58 crore, and now it will have to spend around Rs 9,000 crore annually. This decision of the government will now be sent for cabinet approval, the official said. The social security programmes, under which pensions have been increased, are the Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme, Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme, Indira Gandhi National Disability Pension Scheme, Laxmibai Social Security Pension Scheme, Bihar Disability Pension Scheme and Mukhyamantri Vriddhjan Pension Scheme. Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary said the interest rate on loans for 'Jeevika Didi' has been reduced by 3 per cent. This decision will provide relief to women, the elderly and disabled people, he said. 'The NDA government cares about every section of society. Congratulations to all,' he added.
