CPI-ML protests against voters' list revision in Bihar

Ranchi: CPI-ML on Monday submitted a memorandum to the Jharkhand chief electoral officer (CEO) K Ravi Kumar, demanding the annulment of the special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral roll in Bihar. CPI-ML had planned a rally from the Birsa Chowk to the CEO's office and invited JMM and Congress, but they cited various reasons for not taking part. The planned march was postponed owing to rains. CPI-ML politburu member Haldhar Mahto said, "The Election Commission's (EC) action on SIR lacks transparency and there are indications of hobnobbing with the Centre." CPI-ML state secretary Manoj Bhakt said, "Serious questions are being raised over the election process and impartiality of the EC particularly after the Chief Justice of India was replaced by the Union home minister in forming the commission. Around 65 lakh voters have been removed from voter's list in Bihar without publicising the reason for the action. The step has led to serious doubts among people." The data presented by the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, after analysis of voters' list is frightening. Depriving any citizen of voting rights and creating fake lists is like ending democracy. EC should make public the list of deleted voters and the reasons, CPI-ML leaders claimed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 10 Best Mattresses by Consumer Reports (Here's What You May Not Want to Miss) QuestionHero Learn More Undo The party stated that EC has the responsibilities of conducting an impartial election and restoring faith of people in the institution. Roll revision biggest attack on Constitution: CPI(ML)

Patna: CPI(ML) general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya said here on Monday that the biggest attack on the country's Constitution, democracy and voting rights of people has been committed through the special intensive revision (SIR) of the state's electoral roll conducted by the Election Commission (EC). He said from the existing electoral roll that had 7.90 crore enlisted electors, names of as many as 66 lakh electors have been removed by the EC in one month as part of the of the SIR exercise. He was addressing the party's rally near the state legislature building, after the conclusion of the protest march from Buddha Smriti Park on Fraser Road to Satmurti. "What the Election Commission has done through the SIR exercise is the biggest attack on the country's Constitution, democracy and citizens' rights to vote in the post-Independence period," Bhattacharya alleged. "In the Constitution, each citizen is equal and every citizen enjoys voting rights," he said, adding: "But, today attempts are being made to snatch away those rights from the people of the country. People will come forward to defeat this design of the powers that be." Bhattacharya said that most of those whose names have been removed from the electoral rolls are marginalised members of the society. "Several people are alive, but they have been declared dead and their names removed. As many as 36 lakh people of Bihar, who work outside the state have been dropped from the list. The 7 lakh others have been declared as having duplicate EPIC cards," he said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Currency watch: Rupee slips 17 paise to 87.75 against US dollar; importer demand and higher crude prices weigh on sentiment

The rupee reversed early gains to end 17 paise lower at 87.75 against the US dollar on Monday, pressured by persistent importer demand for the greenback, a rebound in crude oil prices, and foreign fund outflows. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now At the interbank foreign exchange market, the domestic currency opened at 87.56 and traded in a narrow range of 87.48 to 87.75 before settling at the day's low. On Friday, the rupee had closed flat at 87.58 after recovering from intra-day losses, PTI reported. 'The rupee opened higher on a weak US dollar index and positive domestic markets but later pared gains due to firmer crude oil prices and FII outflows,' said Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst, Commodities Research, Mirae Asset Sharekhan. He added that the local unit may trade with a negative bias amid uncertainty over trade tariff issues between India and the US. Persistent foreign portfolio outflows could weigh on the rupee, though a weak US dollar may offer support at lower levels, Choudhary said. 'Investors may remain cautious ahead of US inflation data this week. We expect USD-INR spot to trade in the 87.35–88 range,' he noted. Brent crude futures edged up 0.03% to $66.61 per barrel. The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, was up 0.10% at 98.28. Investors are also awaiting India and US CPI inflation readings and developments from the planned August 15 talks between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on the Ukraine war. India has reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi's position that this is 'not an era of war' and has consistently called for dialogue and diplomacy to end the conflict.
