PM Shehbaz in Istanbul to thank ‘a friend in need'

ISTANBUL: Prime Minister of Pakistan Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, who arrived on an official two-day visit to Turkiye, held a warm and most cordial meeting with the President of the Republic of Türkiye, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, during his official visit to Turkiye Sunday.
The engagement reaffirmed the deep-rooted, historic, and brotherly ties between Pakistan and Türkiye, anchored in shared values, mutual respect, and a common vision for progress and prosperity.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who was accompanied by Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Government and people of Türkiye for their unwavering support to Pakistan during the recent developments in South Asia, underscoring the strength of the fraternal bonds between the two nations.

He lauded Turkiye's principled stance and the outpouring support of goodwill of the Turkish people for Pakistan and termed it as a source of great comfort and strength for Pakistan.
The Prime Minister highlighted the commitment and courage and the spirit of sacrifice of the Armed Forces of Pakistan and the resolute patriotism of the people Pakistan that was demonstrated in an unprecedented manner which contributed greatly to Pakistan's overwhelming victory in Marak-e-Haq and Operation Bunyanum Marsoos in the defence of our homeland.
Emphasizing the need to further strengthen economic cooperation, particularly through joint ventures and enhanced bilateral investment, the Prime Minister highlighted key sectors including renewable energy, information technology, defence production, infrastructure development, and agriculture as areas of mutual interest and potential.
The two leaders conducted a comprehensive review of the entire spectrum of bilateral relations and reiterated their resolve to elevate the strategic partnership to greater heights. They also followed up on the implementation of key decisions taken during the 7th session of the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council (HLSCC), held in Islamabad on 13 February 2025.
In addition to bilateral issues, Prime Minister Sharif and President Erdogan discussed pressing regional and international developments. Both leaders reaffirmed their principled support for each other's core concerns, including the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. They also expressed deep concern over the grave humanitarian situation in Gaza, urgently calling for an immediate ceasefire and unimpeded humanitarian access to the affected Palestinian population.
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to further deepen the multifaceted cooperation between Pakistan and Türkiye.
The two leaders pledged to continue working closely for regional peace, sustainable development, and the shared prosperity of their peoples. Deputy Prime Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Information & Broadcasting Ataullah Tarar, SAPM Syed Tariq Fatemi and Pakistan's Ambassador to Turkiye Dr Yusuf Junaid were also part of Pakistan delegation.

The Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony has announced the commencement of Hajj 2026 applications for registered pilgrims, with the collection of dues starting from Monday. The ministry's spokesperson Muhammad Umar Butt, prospective pilgrims can submit their applications through designated banks and the official online portal. The registration process will follow a 'first-come, first-served' policy for already registered applicants, who will be required to deposit their first installment between August 4 and 9, he added. Umar said subject to seat availability, new applicants will be allowed to apply from August 11 to 16. However, he said the collection of Hajj dues will be halted as soon as all available seats are filled. He said the second installment will be collected from November 1. Umar said in a significant policy shift, the previous age cap and restriction on performing Hajj multiple times have been removed, broadening accessibility for aspiring pilgrims. However, the spokesperson clarified that children born after March 1, 2014, will not be eligible to apply for Hajj. He urged all interested pilgrims to act swiftly and complete their application procedures within the announced timeframes to secure their seats for Hajj 2026.

Former Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and a leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Sardar Abdul Qayyum Niazi, has been arrested by police from the Samahni area of Bhimber. He was 'illegally taken into custody' while he was heading to address a public rally in AJK on Sunday, the PTI said in a statement on its Facebook page. AJK Police arrested the former PM near Jhandi Juntra while he was travelling from Samahni to attend a rally in Bhimber. On this occasion, a scuffle also broke out between police and PTI workers. PTI launches 90-day 'do or die' movement Aaj News cited sources as saying that Niazi was participating in a public contact campaign to mobilise support for a rally to be held in Lahore on August 5, aimed at securing the release of PTI founding chairman Imran Khan. Sources said that after being taken into custody, the former AJK premier was transferred to Mirpur. The arrest of the PTI AJK President has increased concerns about the potential for further arrests of party leaders and the possibility of police blocking PTI convoys from travelling to Lahore. Police said arrest warrants were issued against Niazi two days ago in connection with the May 9 riots. The PTI leader was facing more than 11 cases, they added.
