PM Shehbaz in Istanbul to thank ‘a friend in need'
ISTANBUL: Prime Minister of Pakistan Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, who arrived on an official two-day visit to Turkiye, held a warm and most cordial meeting with the President of the Republic of Türkiye, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, during his official visit to Turkiye Sunday. The engagement reaffirmed the deep-rooted, historic, and brotherly ties between Pakistan and Türkiye, anchored in shared values, mutual respect, and a common vision for progress and prosperity. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who was accompanied by Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Government and people of Türkiye for their unwavering support to Pakistan during the recent developments in South Asia, underscoring the strength of the fraternal bonds between the two nations. Turkiye to continue be on Pakistan's side in good, bad times, says Erdogan He lauded Turkiye's principled stance and the outpouring support of goodwill of the Turkish people for Pakistan and termed it as a source of great comfort and strength for Pakistan. The Prime Minister highlighted the commitment and courage and the spirit of sacrifice of the Armed Forces of Pakistan and the resolute patriotism of the people Pakistan that was demonstrated in an unprecedented manner which contributed greatly to Pakistan's overwhelming victory in Marak-e-Haq and Operation Bunyanum Marsoos in the defence of our homeland. Emphasizing the need to further strengthen economic cooperation, particularly through joint ventures and enhanced bilateral investment, the Prime Minister highlighted key sectors including renewable energy, information technology, defence production, infrastructure development, and agriculture as areas of mutual interest and potential. The two leaders conducted a comprehensive review of the entire spectrum of bilateral relations and reiterated their resolve to elevate the strategic partnership to greater heights. They also followed up on the implementation of key decisions taken during the 7th session of the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council (HLSCC), held in Islamabad on 13 February 2025. In addition to bilateral issues, Prime Minister Sharif and President Erdogan discussed pressing regional and international developments. Both leaders reaffirmed their principled support for each other's core concerns, including the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. They also expressed deep concern over the grave humanitarian situation in Gaza, urgently calling for an immediate ceasefire and unimpeded humanitarian access to the affected Palestinian population. The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to further deepen the multifaceted cooperation between Pakistan and Türkiye. The two leaders pledged to continue working closely for regional peace, sustainable development, and the shared prosperity of their peoples. Deputy Prime Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Information & Broadcasting Ataullah Tarar, SAPM Syed Tariq Fatemi and Pakistan's Ambassador to Turkiye Dr Yusuf Junaid were also part of Pakistan delegation.

Ankara Summit: Iraq, Turkiye focus on bilateral cooperation
Shafaq News/ Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani met on Thursday with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Ankara to advance bilateral cooperation. According to al-Sudani's media office, the meeting centered on implementing agreements signed in April 2024, covering counterterrorism coordination, border security, water resource management, and economic integration—particularly the Development Road Project. The summit coincided with the fourth session of the Iraq–Turkiye High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council. Erdoğan praised al-Sudani's leadership, describing Iraq as a 'key stabilizing force' in the region. 'We welcome Iraq's constructive role, thanks to the wisdom of Prime Minister al-Sudani … we will continue to strengthen this partnership.' The Turkish president also urged regional countries to contribute to the Development Road Project, calling it a critical infrastructure initiative. Speaking earlier at a forum organized by Anadolu Agency, the Iraqi Prime Minister reiterated that Iraqi-Turkish relations are 'an integral part of the regional stability equation,' emphasizing the Development Road as 'one of the most significant infrastructure undertakings in the Middle East.' Al-Sudani warned that 'the Israeli government, under Benjamin Netanyahu, is attempting to drag the entire region into war,' and stressed that Iraq's foreign policy prioritizes de-escalation and regional balance.

Pakistani PM to visit Turkiye today for meeting with Erdogan
ISLAMABAD: Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will be visiting Ankara today, Tuesday, to meet Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and discuss bilateral ties and the regional situation, the foreign office said in a statement. Pakistan and Turkiye enjoy close cultural, historical and military relations which they are now expanding into the realms of trade, economy and investment as both countries seek to develop their economies. 'During the visit, the Prime Minister will hold extensive discussions with President Erdogan on bilateral relations as well as exchange views on recent developments in the region and beyond,' the foreign office said about Sharif's visit to Ankara. 'The upcoming meeting represents a continuation of robust dialogue and underscores the shared commitment to further elevate the multifaceted partnership between Pakistan and Türkiye.' As long-standing allies and strategic partners, Pakistan and Turkiye maintain a tradition of regular exchanges and have institutionalized leadership-level mechanisms such as the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council (HLSCC). The 7th session of the HLSCC was held in Islamabad on Feb 12-13 this year, and co-chair by Sharif and Erdogan. Pakistan and Turkiye have a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) since August 2022, granting tariff concessions on certain goods, and are working to increase bilateral trade to $5 billion. While trade has increased in recent years, it is not yet a major trading partner for either country. A Free Trade Agreement is also under consideration. In 2023, Pakistan's exports to Turkiye were $352.1 million, and imports stood at $250.8 million. Turkiye's exports to Pakistan in 2024 included items like lead, meat, and works of art while Pakistan's exports to Turkiye included explosives, zinc, meat, and fur skins.

The Prime Minister's visit underscores the deep-rooted strategic partnership between Pakistan and Türkiye, marked by a tradition of regular high-level engagements. During the talks, the two leaders will review bilateral relations and exchange views on recent regional and global developments, the statement added. 'As long-standing allies and strategic partners, Pakistan and Türkiye maintain a tradition of regular high-level exchanges, reflecting the exceptional bonds of brotherhood between the two nations,' the Foreign Office stated. The two countries have institutionalized their partnership through the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council (HLSCC), a leadership-led mechanism for enhanced collaboration. The 7th session of the HLSCC was held in Islamabad in February 2025, co-chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Erdogan. 'The upcoming meeting represents a continuation of this robust dialogue and underscores the shared commitment to further elevate the multifaceted partnership between Pakistan and Türkiye,' the statement added.
