Portrait of a writer: The refugee, ‘pagal' and Bollywood star who is bringing Manto to Pune

Lakshmi Mansion, an old building in the iconic Mall Road of Lahore, used to attract a certain kind of people, who came asking for 'Hazrat Manto'. They had turned the Indo-Pakistani writer Saadat Hasan Manto into a pir (holy man). One day, a young theatre actor from Delhi turned up at the door, looking for memories, anecdotes, and a feeling. He stayed with the family and had long conversations with them, visited the grave of Manto, and slept where the writer used to sit. 'Tum jaisa pagal nahi dekha hai koi (I have not seen a crazy person like you),' Manto's daughter, Nighat Patel, told him.
The actor was Ashwath Bhatt, whose intense eyes had witnessed untold horrors in his own homeland. Bhatt was a part of the Kashmiri Pandit exodus from Srinagar in the early 1990s. As refugees, his family was struggling badly. He himself was disturbed, angry, and a mess. That's when Bhatt happened to pick up a book by Manto. 'When I read it, it just hit me out of the blue. It was like a big, big jolt. I wondered who this guy was. All I was seeing in my environment at that time of my life, if I use one word, it would be 'hypocrisy'. I related a lot to what this chap, Manto, was saying,' says Bhatt.
It was also a time that Bhatt was growing into theatre, the only space where he used to forget all his insecurities and troubles and just focus on the rehearsal or whatever exercises his director had asked him to do. He did a play of a Manto story, Thanda Gosht, which was a runaway hit in Delhi. It was only a matter of time before Bhatt would think of a play that would be not only about Manto's stories but the writer himself.
Ek Mulaqat Manto Se was born in 1998, whose first audiences were Bhatt's friends at the National School of Drama (NSD), India's top theatre training academy. Bhatt, though, did not stage the play publicly. He kept developing it, researching every nuance, adding and honing its details. He stayed with the story even as he graduated from NSD and was selected to join the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. At last, in 2002, Ek Mulaqat Manto Se opened at the Nehru Centre in London to acclaim. Bhatt, now a famous Bollywood actor based in Mumbai, will bring the play to Pune's The Box on July 26 (Saturday), 7 pm.
Ek Mulaqat Manto Se is in two parts, pre-and post-Independence. The writer, who chronicled the horrors and abuse of the Partition, ensuring that the world never forgets, is at the centre of Bhatt's play. The narrative revolves around Manto's childhood, family, and friends, the persecution he faced, and his self-ridicule. It talks about Manto's depression and drinking, his time in Bollywood, before the Hindi film industry was called that, and the irony, hypocrisy, and moral decay of the society that he satirized in his works.
'Manto is known for his irreverent writing, holding up a mirror to society, especially at ugly times. He is hailed as one of Urdu's finest and most controversial writers. The performance is based on articles written by Manto,' says Bhatt. He plays Manto and addresses the audience directly in an effort to answer the question: 'Why I write what I write?'
Ek Mulaqat Manto Se is being revived after five years, and Bhatt keeps adding and changing it. 'I will keep doing the play till I am dead. It will end with me, or when I am creatively dead and cannot perform,' he says. Bhatt adds that Laxmi Mansion was redeveloped for commercial establishments. 'The house was not saved or made into a foundation or preserved as a museum. What they did was give Manto the Nishan-e-Imtiaz, Pakistan's highest civilian honour, in 2012. Kolkata, Aug 1 (PTI) Bangladeshi model and actress Shanta Pal allegedly used fake Indian documents to jointly purchase properties in the southern part of the city along with her live-in partner, a police officer said on Friday. Pal was arrested earlier this week, with fake Indian documents like Aadhaar card, ration card. Police are verifying the details of the property transaction, the officer said. Initial probe revealed that Pal allegedly used fake documents and entered into a 'digital marriage" with the man, hailing from Andhra Pradesh. She arrived in Kolkata in 2023 from Barisal, Bangladesh, using her Bangladeshi passport. 'She brought along her friend and alleged partner, Ashraf, a resident of Andhra Pradesh, who works in the merchant navy. 'The duo rented an apartment in Park Street and later moved to Golf Green, where they began living together. Shanta reportedly kept Ashraf's passport in her possession. With the help of a local agent she allegedly forged multiple Indian identity documents, including ration card, Aadhaar card, voter ID, and PAN card," the officer said. She obtained a fake Aadhaar card, falsely claiming to be a resident of Gopalpur, Barshul in Burdwan, and later procured another under her Golf Green address. 'Using both her and Ashraf's documents, they allegedly purchased properties in Kolkata," police said. Further investigation revealed that Shanta had represented Bangladesh in the Indo-Bangla Beauty Pageant in 2016, and in 2019, she went on to become Miss Asia Global. 'Following her success in modelling, she began her acting career before eventually joining a Bangladeshi airline," he said. Police are cross-checking her professional background as part of the ongoing investigation into alleged identity fraud and property acquisition in India. In the last two years, Shanta acted in Tamil and Bengali films, and even signed an Odia film, the officer said. After watching Dhadak, one finds a serious layer in this infantile sequel to Ajay Devgn's tribute to his Punjabi roots as well. The writing plays on the Bollywood Sardar stereotype, one who is innocent, stands his ground, and doesn't show his back in a battle. Lest we forget, the makers ensure the word Punjabi keeps popping up in the dhol-centric background score as well. After a long wait for a visa, when the simpleton Jassi (Ajay) comes to London, he discovers that his wife Dimple (Neeru Bajwa) has decided to ditch her. Lost, he strikes a chord with Rabia (Mrunal Thakur), a Pakistani musician who runs a wedding band with a transgender musician, Gul (Deepak Dobriyal), and Mehwish (Kubra Sait), as well as her foster daughter, Saba (Roshni Walia), after being ditched by her philandering husband, Danish (Chunkey Panday). When Saba falls in love with the heir of the Sandhu family, Rabia convinces Jassi to play Saba's father, leading to a series of endless and politically incorrect gags. The Sandhu family is led by Raja (Ravi Kishan). who hates Pakistanis and loves Indian army men, forcing Jassi to play a colonel and channelise the spirit of Sunny Deol of Border and Gadar. Son of Sardaar 2 (Hindi) Director: Vijay Kumar Arora Cast: Ajay Devgn, Mrunal Thakur, Ravi Kishan, Deepak Dobriyal, Sharat Saxena, Mukul Dev, Vindu Dara Singh, Neeru Bajwa, Kubra Sait Duration: 147 minutes Storyline: Jassi goes to London and falls in love with a Pakistani girl. Regarding depth, here too, women are seen as the repository of the family and country's honour. The philandering Pakistani feels bad only when Indians win over his wife and daughter (Roshni Walia). To his credit, director Vijay Kumar Arora finds ways to incorporate long live the neighbour into the script in these frosty times, but does little to build on the crazy plot. On the bad boys' side, there is an attrition over the Punjabi, Bihari, and English wives of the rakish patriarch of the family, played by Sharat Saxena as Raja, who nurses a grudge against his father for being closest to his English pole dancer wife and ignoring his Bihari mother. There is a class tussle in the loony comedy because Raja is grumpy because he could neither speak Punjabi nor English fluently. In the livestock business, he judges men by their breed. Too much social context! As the unlikely sardar, Ravi, who was brought in as a last-minute replacement for Sanjay Dutt, fills the screen with unrehearsed energy and finds his groove in the company of Mukul Dev and Vindu Dara Singh, who were part of the original. Dev, who passed on recently, impresses with his comic timing. The star of the show, however, is Deepak. As he discusses gender fluidity with Jassi, he finds method even in the most madcap moments. Aided by technology, Ajay is in great shape, but comedy doesn't come naturally to him, and in the presence of Ravi and Deepak, his comedy comes across as a little too broad. The talented Mrunal gives it all and perhaps sees it as her vehicle for mass entertainment. However, despite strong performances, in between the jokes that land, there are long passages that make you cringe and question your professional choices.
