Watch: Shah Rukh and Kohli light up IPL opening ceremony with dance
Listen to article
The opening ceremony of the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was a spectacular event, bringing together the worlds of Bollywood and cricket, with Shah Rukh Khan playing the perfect host.
The audience in Kolkata was treated to a memorable evening of entertainment, thanks to SRK's amazing hosting skills, which added a special touch to the ceremony.
The highlight of the event was when Shah Rukh Khan, in his signature style, called former RCB captain Virat Kohli the "GOAT" (Greatest of All Time) and even joined him on stage for a dance on his blockbuster song 'Jhoome Jo Pathaan'.
The crowd at Eden Gardens erupted with loud "Kohli Kohli" chants, which SRK joined in on, further elevating the excitement.
"Virat bhai is the only player who has been associated with just one team in the entirety of the IPL. He is the OG. The GOAT of IPL," SRK said before inviting Kohli on stage.
"The king of 22 yards and a billion hearts. Let's hear the loudest for the one and only the GOAT, Mr. Virat Kohli," he added, drawing cheers from the crowd.
The audience went wild as 'King Kohli' and 'King Khan' danced together, with fans immediately sharing videos of the performance on social media.
Before Kohli's appearance, SRK had already set the stage on fire with KKR's Rinku Singh, who joined him for a fun dance on SRK's popular track 'Lutt Putt Gaya' from his film 'Dunki'. Rinku's moves had Kohli in splits, making for a funny yet unforgettable moment.
SRK's charisma was unmatched as he spoke to the crowd, saying, "Party Pathan ke ghar pe rakhoge toh mehman nawazi ke liye Pathan khud aayega aur patake bhi layega," sending the crowd into a frenzy("If you host a party at Pathan's house, Pathan himself will come to greet you and will bring fireworks as well!")
The Bollywood magic continued with performances by Shreya Ghoshal, Karan Aujla, and Disha Patani, adding their star power to the IPL's opening night.
After the star-studded ceremony, the players of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) entered the stadium to kick off the opening match of the IPL tournament.

South Africa name squad for Zimbabwe Test
South Africa have unveiled their squad for the upcoming two-Test series against Zimbabwe, set to begin later this month in Bulawayo. The squad features five uncapped players, with 19-year-old batting sensation Lhuan-dre Pretorius headlining the selection following his breakout performances in domestic cricket. Joining Pretorius in line for a potential Test debut are Dewald Brevis, Lesego Senokwane, Codi Yusuf, and Prenelan Subrayen. The series does not fall under the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27, as Zimbabwe are not part of the current cycle. It will instead serve as a developmental opportunity for head coach Shukri Conrad to test new talent and build squad depth ahead of the 20252027 WTC cycle. With the future in mind, senior players such as Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada have been rested. Veteran seamer Dane Paterson, who is not part of the squad, is also reportedly considering retirement following the recent Lord's Test. Pretorius has made an immediate impact in first-class cricket, scoring three centuries in his first five matches, including one in the domestic red-ball final. He currently averages an impressive 65.57. Brevis, who was part of the squad that toured Bangladesh last year but did not get a game, has earned his call-up through consistent domestic performances. He finished second in the run charts of the first-class season with 573 runs in 12 innings at an average of 47.75, including two centuries and two half-centuries. Brevis initially rose to prominence as the leading run-scorer in the 2022 ICC Under-19 World Cup. Kwena Maphaka, who made his debut earlier this year against Pakistan, will lead the pace attack alongside Lungi Ngidi. "Nandre has been cleared to play T20s. We'll reintroduce him gradually, starting with the shortest format, before "Nandre has been given the all-clear by the medical team to play T20s. The plan is to ease him back into the game, starting with the shortest format, and then slowly work him up to the longer formats," Conrad said. "We'll be keeping a close eye on how he handles the workload as he builds toward playing Test cricket again. "Lizaad is progressing well and is currently in the final phase of his rehabilitation from his knee surgery." Notably absent is Anrich Nortje, who was set to feature in the previous summer's Tests but declined a central contract. Nortje has not played international cricket since the 2024 T20 World Cup final and has only appeared in two IPL matches since then, having dealt with multiple injuries, including a broken toe. South Africa Test Squad for Zimbabwe Series: Temba Bavuma (captain), David Bedingham, Matthew Breetzke, Dewald Brevis, Corbin Bosch, Tony de Zorzi, Zubayr Hamza, Keshav Maharaj, Kwena Maphaka, Wiaan Mulder, Lungi Ngidi, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Lesego Senokwane, Prenelan Subrayen, Kyle Verreynne, Codi Yusuf.

Australia's Starc comfortable with IPL pullout regardless of repercussion
MELBOURNE: Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc is comfortable with his decision to leave the Indian Premier League (IPL) following the India-Pakistan clashes last month regardless of any repercussions, the 35-year-old said. The IPL was suspended on May 9 in the wake of hostilities between the two. It resumed on May 17 after the nuclear-armed neighbours agreed to a ceasefire. While most IPL foreign recruits returned to complete their franchise commitment, the Delhi Capitals duo of Starc and fellow Australian Jake Fraser-McGurk took no further part in the 10-team league. 'I'm comfortable with my decision and how I felt about the whole situation and how it was handled,' Starc told the Sydney Morning Herald on Friday. 'Time will tell with repercussions or how it looks with guys that didn't return. But I've had my questions and concerns leading into that game, and obviously we saw what happened, which played a part in my decision.' Starc was in Dharamsala, near the Pakistan border, for Delhi's May 9 match against the Punjab Kings. The contest was abandoned midway through, although league organisers blamed it on a floodlights failure. 'Jake and I chose not to (return). So it was a very individual decision, and I'm happy to live with whatever comes of that,' Starc said. He opted out of the Champions Trophy in Pakistan earlier this year citing personal reasons and has skipped the IPL more than once to preserve himself for international cricket. Marsh back to skipper Australia in Windies T20s, Cummins and Starc rested The left-arm quick said he withdrew from the remainder of the IPL because of the extraordinary circumstances. 'I'm still heavily committed to the Delhi group, and I'm not someone that's gone into tournaments and pulled out after being picked up in an auction or whatever that looks like,' Starc said. 'These are different circumstances … I had a discussion back home then came to a decision, and whatever comes from that I'm comfortable with that and we move forward.'

Indian police arrest four people for cricket fans stampede
Police in India's tech capital of Bengaluru have arrested four people, including an official of a top cricket franchise, in connection with a stampede during a trophy celebration that killed 11 people and injured 47, media reported. Four people, three from an event management company and one official from the Royal Challengers Bengaluru cricket team, whose victory in the Indian Premier League this week led to fan frenzy, were arrested early on Friday morning, media said. Spokespersons for the team did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters. On Wednesday, Bengaluru were celebrating their win the previous day over Punjab Kings in the final of the IPL's 18th edition, the world's richest T20 cricket league. The team had given away free passes for the celebration at a stadium in the city but said that numbers would be limited. Thousands of people gathered outside the stadium, and fans without passes tried push through the gates, leading to a stampede. At least 11 die in crowd chaos outside Indian cricket stadium The franchise said later the incident was 'unfortunate' and pledged one million Indian rupees to each family of the 11 fans who died on Wednesday. Stampedes occur frequently in India, mainly at religious events, but it was the first time in 45 years that fans had died in a crush at a sporting event, media said. India's head cricket coach Gautam Gambhir said on Thursday he did not support such roadshows and celebrations. 'Celebration is important. But more important than that is the life of any person. So, if we are not prepared or if we can't handle the crowd in that way, then we might as well not have these roadshows,' Gambhir told reporters.
