Australian cricket star
Steve Smith
has expressed his thoughts about qualifying for the T20I squad in the upcoming Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, acknowledging the challenges ahead.
Cricket is making its return to the Olympics after a long absence of 128 years, with its last appearance dating back to 1900.
Smith, who will be 39 during the Los Angeles Games, is eager to represent Australia at this prestigious sporting event.
"I mean, it is a goal of mine to try and make that Olympic team in 28. I think, you know, the team's doing pretty well at the moment, the Australian T20 team. So it's going to be tricky to get in there, but you know, just got to keep putting my best foot forward, and we'll never know," Smith was quoted as saying to Sky Sports.

"Yeah, I mean, I've watched a lot of Olympics since I was a young kid and really enjoyed watching the Australian athletes go about it. So, you know, when I heard that cricket was going to be a part of it, I was like, that would be really cool to be involved."
The prospect of competing at the Olympics has captured Smith's interest, despite his extensive experience in major cricket tournaments including World Cups, Champions Trophy, and World Test Championship finals.
"So, you know, I've obviously played in, you know, lots of World Cups and Ashes and uh Border Gavaskar Trophy and things like that, but um yeah, when this popped up, it was something new and another opportunity to, you know, represent your country on a world stage. So, yeah, it was like I'd love to be involved in that, but it's still a fair way away. So, we'll see," he added.
Smith recently retired from ODI cricket following a Champions Trophy disappointment. His participation in T20 internationals has been limited, with his most recent appearance occurring in February 2024 against New Zealand.
The upcoming T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka next year adds uncertainty to Smith's position in Australia's future plans.

India vs Australia hockey: 2nd match live time, streaming, telecast details

The Indian men's hockey team will take on Australia in the second fixture of their four-match series on Saturday, August 16, at the Perth Hockey Stadium. After a disappointing start to the tour, India will be eager to bounce back and level the series. In the opening encounter, held on Independence Day 2025, India suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of the hosts. Facing the fifth-ranked team in the world, India, currently ranked seventh, will be aiming to put in a stronger performance in the second clash. The two sides are no strangers to each other, having recently met during the FIH Pro League 2024–25 in Europe, where Australia edged out India in both matches by a narrow 3-2 margin. Despite those losses, India will draw inspiration from their historic 3-2 triumph over Australia at the Paris 2024 Olympics, their first Olympic victory against the Aussies since the 1972 Munich Games. Brian Lara tells Cricket West Indies to seek Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo's intervention: ‘Time to act'

West Indies, led by Shai Hope, might have won the three-match ODI series against Pakistan 2-1, but cannot deny that the state of the sport in the Islands has gone down considerably. Not long ago, the team from the Caribbean were bundled out for 27 in the day-night Test against Australia. West Indies then suffered defeats against Australia and Pakistan in the T20I series. Following the defeat in the pink ball Test, Cricket West Indies (CWI) held an emergency meeting, which was attended by former Windies captains Clive Lloyd and Brian Lara. Brian Lara tells CWI to reach out to Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo(Getty) In an Instagram post, Brian Lara has now urged Cricket West Indies to bring former cricketers such as Kieron Pollard, Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo on board to elevate the current generation of players. Earlier this year, Nicholas Pooran and Andre Russell retired from international cricket. While Russell's decision did not surprise many, Nicholas Pooran's call came as a shocker, as he is relatively young and had a lot to offer to the West Indies. 'In particular, I believe former players such as Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard possess a unique and timely perspective that can prove invaluable. These men have not only played at the highest level, but have done so in an era that reflects the modern athlete's psyche, ambitions, and motivations,' Lara wrote on Instagram. Also Read: Brian Lara gets a call past midnight: 'Someone just broke your record'; WI legend then dials the 'noisy' dressing room 'Their proximity to today's players — in terms of generational alignment and shared dressing rooms — gives them an authentic understanding of what drives, distracts, or disillusions the modern West Indian cricketer,' he added. 'We must act now' The former West Indies captain, who holds the record for the highest individual score in Tests, believes Gayle, Pollard, and Bravo could lead to better communication and help cricket in the islands get back on track. It must be mentioned that the T20 World Cup-winning captain, Daren Sammy, is the current head coach of the West Indies. However, the results have been far and between under his reign. 'Chris, Dwayne and KP , through their own journeys across global franchise circuits and in service to West Indies cricket, are exceptionally well-positioned to offer that clarity,' Lara wrote. 'If we are to build a lasting solution — one that reconnects performance with purpose — we must engage all those who carry relevant insight. This is a moment for collective wisdom, not isolated intervention. The deeper the bench of experience we draw from, the more equipped we will be to tackle the structural and psychological challenges that continue to plague the regional game. The time to act is now, but we must act together,' he added. West Indies had failed to qualify for the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, while the team also failed to make the cut for the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan and Dubai.

How Is Tim David Successful In T20s This Year? Numbers Reveal Startling Truth

Last Updated: Tim David has become a top T20 player, excelling for Australia and Royal Challengers Bangalore. He scored 265 runs in four innings for Australia this year, averaging 88.33. As Australia faces South Africa in the T20I decider in Cairns, all eyes will be on the powerful batting of Aussie middle-order hitter Tim David. This year, David has emerged as one of the world's best T20 players. His performances, whether hitting fours and sixes for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) during their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title win or rebuilding Australia's innings with his fearless sixes, demonstrate a commendable balance of destruction and maturity. Each hit showcases his ability to combine audacity with calculated risks. David was a crucial part of RCB's batting lineup, especially during the death overs. He contributed significantly to the team's success, scoring 187 valuable runs in nine innings at an average of 62.33 and an impressive strike rate of 185.14. A standout performance was his unbeaten 50 off 26 balls, including five fours and three sixes, in a rain-affected match at Chinnaswamy Stadium. Despite RCB being reduced to 95/9, David's efforts kept them competitive. How Has Tim David Reinvented Himself? In the death overs, David scored 126 runs from 62 balls at a strike rate of 203.22, with nine fours and eleven sixes. His boundary ratio was 3.1 balls per boundary, and he played just 21 dot balls, maintaining an average of 42.00. This year, he has been exceptional for Australia, scoring 265 runs in four innings at an average of 88.33 and a strike rate of 212.00, including a century and two fifties. Within 125 balls, he smashed 15 fours and 27 sixes for the Aussies. Since switching from Singapore to Australian colours in 2022, David has primarily batted at number six, scoring 544 runs in 27 innings with an average of 28.63 and a strike rate of over 172, including two fifties and a top score of 64*. This year, his promotion to the upper middle-order has produced impressive numbers, with all his T20I runs coming from batting at number five (three times) and four (once). Against the West Indies, David was promoted to number five in the fourth T20I to help chase 215. With Australia at 61/3 near the end of the powerplay, David didn't falter even when Cameron Green fell at 87. He raced to a 16-ball fifty and then scored his first T20 century in just 37 balls, including six fours and eleven sixes at a strike rate of 275.67, making it Australia's fastest T20I century. David's aggressive batting helped Australia achieve a clean sweep by chasing 174 runs in the final T20I, where he scored 30 from 12 balls. In the home series against South Africa, David faced a challenging situation with Australia at 30/3. He counter-attacked, scoring 40 runs in 16 balls with Cameron Green, providing a crucial boost. Despite Australia slipping to 75/6, David's 52-ball 83, including four boundaries and eight sixes, ensured a fighting total of 178, leading to a 17-run victory. In the second T20I against South Africa, chasing 219, David was promoted to number four. He scored a 24-ball 50, pushing Australia past 100 runs before falling in the 10th over. Though Australia fell short by 53 runs, David's performance set a platform for the remaining players. David's prowess as a death-overs finisher is well-known. Since 2020, he has scored 1,954 runs in 121 innings at an average of 28.74 and a strike rate of over 197, the most runs in death overs (17-20) by any batter in this period. This year, he ranks among the world's elite, having played 29 T20s, scoring 699 runs at an average of 53.76 and a strike rate of 183.76, with a century and five fifties. He joins an exclusive group of four other stars with similar achievements this year: Pakistan's Sahibzada Farhan, South Africa's Dewald Brevis, Jos Buttler, and India's Suryakumar Yadav. David has the second-best average and strike rate among them. In fact, he is only the third player in T20 history to score over 500 runs in a calendar year with an average of 50-plus and a strike rate of 180-plus, alongside Kieron Pollard and Cameron White. With 5,604 career runs in 286 matches and 257 innings at an average of 31.13 and a strike rate of 162.62, Tim David continues to be a major force in T20 leagues worldwide. Will we witness more of David's brilliance this year?
