Antarctic clouds and pristine air hold clues to climate model blind spots
She's standing in temperatures well below freezing, stationed deep in the Southern Ocean, just off East Antarctica.
It's about as far from civilisation as you can get. The closest city, Hobart, is 5,000 kilometres away.
But for scientists like Ms Bekemeier, this remote part of the world represents a treasure trove.
The Southern Ocean is known as the "engine room" for global weather and climate, yet it remains a big blind spot for climate data.
Scientists from around the world are making the mammoth journey to this end of the Earth to try and fill in crucial gaps in knowledge and improve global climate and weather models.
The journey, which she returned from last month, is not for the faint-hearted.
It took Ms Bekemeier — who is based at Colorado State University — three flights spanning more than 24 hours just to get to Hobart.
It is then another week of travel on board the Australian Antarctic Division's RSV Nuyina to reach Denman Glacier, one of the largest glaciers in East Antarctica.
She spent nine weeks on board the massive icebreaker, specially designed to break through the ice and huge swells.
The remote location and harsh environment are the very reasons research has been so limited in this part of the globe, especially in the lead-up to winter.
"I was very nervous," Ms Bekemeier said.
"They made it very clear to us after a year of medical testing, psychological testing, jumping through hoops, that you are in a remote region on a boat.
"If you need help, we have two doctors, but you really cannot get out.
"It takes a week if you're in good condition to get back to land."
The scientists on board the research vessel were investigating a range of important subjects — from marine life to sea floor mapping and recent rapid ice loss.
But for Ms Bekemeier, a climate scientist, it was all about the clouds.
The balloon the researchers released was fitted with sensors to capture data from the inside of these clouds.
Clouds are a crucial aspect of the Earth's climate system, acting to cool and warm it by reflecting sunlight and trapping heat, like a blanket.
"Clouds are constantly doing this job of balancing the incoming sunlight," she said.
"You can see that when you go outside on a hot day and the clouds roll in, and the temperature drops pretty rapidly.
"Then at night, if it's really overcast, it actually feels warmer because at night they insulate the planet."
Yet clouds are also the biggest source of uncertainty for scientists projecting climate change, particularly "mixed phase" clouds, which contain both ice and water.
It's this type of cloud that Ms Bekemeier is trying to better understand.
"The Southern Ocean is the cloudiest region on the planet," she said.
Currently, climate models struggle to represent the ratio of ice to water inside the clouds over this region — something that has big ramifications for temperatures on the ground.
"We really want to understand these clouds so that we can use them in the models to project future climate," Ms Bekemeier said.
Making matters more complex is the region's uniquely fresh air.
While clouds on land are influenced by pollutants and dust, the Southern Ocean has some of the most pristine air on the planet, meaning the make-up of its clouds is different.
Clouds formed over the Southern Ocean can contain microscopic marine life — like fragments of phytoplankton and gases they release.
Ms Bekemeier said understanding what goes into making clouds in this region was a crucial step in shedding light on one of the biggest blind spots in climate models.
A bit closer to home, CSIRO research scientist Ruhi Humphries has recently returned from a separate research trip onboard the RV Investigator, which also ventured into the vast, icy waters of the Southern Ocean.
He, too, is interested in the region's uniquely fresh air, not just for clouds but for what it can tell us about the impacts of human activity on the atmosphere.
"In a city, you would have lots of different sources of pollution. So you've got your cars that are spewing out CO2 and particles, and all your industry."
This clean air over the Southern Ocean gives scientists a better idea of the bigger picture of climate change, away from pollution.
"It's what we call baseline air," he said.
"If you are going on a diet, you need to know your before weight so you can figure out your after weight and how much you've lost.
"And for climate change, if we want to understand our impact and how to mitigate that effectively, we need to know what the atmosphere looks like without that pollution.
"So, we have to find a location on the planet, which is as clean as possible … so then we can understand what the impact of humans is."
This data has been captured in north-west Tasmania, at the Kennaook/Cape Grim Baseline Air Pollution Station, for nearly 50 years.
But now, Dr Humphries and his team have the opportunity to cross-check how fresh that air is with the use of state-of-the-art technology.
"We've always assumed … that the air that we measured there is representative of that really distant Southern Ocean air," he said.
"But now … we're taking the ship south-west, down into the Southern Ocean, to test how far Kennaook/Cape Grim is representative of that baseline air."
According to both Dr Humphries and Ms Bekemeier, the research taking place in the Southern Ocean is a key part of understanding the impacts of climate change globally.
"The Southern Ocean is vital to the future of our planet," Ms Bekemeier said.
"Changes to this region will have impacts for the entire planet; impacts on the Antarctic circulations, impacts on the polar jet stream, impacts on climate around the world, impacts on weather in Australia."
It's for this reason that both Ms Bekemeier and Dr Humphries say it's important the whole world works together, as part of a global endeavour to advance climate science.
"We're part of global monitoring networks, and we're doing global climate models."
For Ms Bekemeier, this hits particularly close to home.
Her role on the Southern Ocean voyage was funded by the US National Science Foundation (NSF).
The NSF has faced significant funding cuts this year under the Trump administration, with hundreds of research grants terminated.
"I am really devastated to see what is happening to climate science and science in general in the United States and the gutting of the US Antarctic program," she said.
"I'm grateful that we have colleagues that can continue this work because we might not be able to do it in our own country."

Donald Trump pushes to shut down climate data-collecting NASA satellites
Donald Trump's administration is moving to shut down two key NASA satellite missions which monitor planet-warming greenhouse gases, in its latest hit to climate science. The missions – which include a freeflying satellite known as OCO-2 and an instrument attached to the International Space Station known as OCO-3 – measure carbon dioxide levels and crop growth around the world, providing critical information to scientists and farmers. But funding for the missions, collectively known as the Orbiting Carbon Observatory, has been scrapped under the President's budget request for fiscal year 2026, starting in October. NASA told AP the missions were being terminated 'to align with the President's agenda and budget priorities'. If decommissioned, OCO-3, would be switched off and remain mounted to the International Space Station. However, freeflying OCO-2 – which already has enough fuel to last through 20240 according to CNN– would be relocated to a lower orbit, where it would remain for years before it eventually burnt up in the Earth's atmosphere. The US Republican-controlled Congress is yet to make a decision on Mr Trump's budget request but David Crisp, a retired NASA scientist who managed the mission, has confirmed the decommissioning planning for both missions is already underway. Dr Crisp told NPR that NASA employees are working on 'Phase F' plans – where teams work out how to end a mission. 'What I have heard is direct communications from people who were making those plans, who weren't allowed to tell me that that's what they were told to do. But they were allowed to ask me questions,' he told the outlet. Other sources also confirmed the decommissioning planning to CNN. Dr Crisp said the missions are 'national assets' and are more accurate than any other systems. He said they have led scientists to discover the Amazon rainforest emits more carbon dioxide than it absorbs and can help monitor drought by detecting the 'glow' of photosynthesis in plants. 'This is really critical. We're learning so much about this rapidly changing planet,' he told AP. Anna Michalak, a climate researcher at Carnegie Science and Stanford University, also pointed out the missions have helped other countries. 'It's not just that these are the only two NASA-funded missions,' she told CNN. 'It's that these have been the most impressive, inspirational missions in this space, globally, period.' Dr Crisp is hoping Congress will vote to maintain funding. However, with Congress currently in recess, a budget may not be adopted before the new fiscal year. In the meantime, the former NASA scientist is among those calling on outside partners, including from overseas, to fund OCO-3, attached to the International Space Station. 'We're going out to billionaires. We're going out to foundations,' he told AP. 'But … it's a really, really bad idea to try and push it off onto private industry or private individuals or private donors. It just doesn't make sense.' A NASA spokesperson told CNN if Mr Trump's proposed budget passes, it 'will be implemented upon the start of the next fiscal year'. US to rewrite its past national climate reports The news comes as the Trump administration announced last week it is revising past editions of the nation's premier climate report. The decision, announced by Energy Secretary Chris Wright on CNN, followed the government's revocation of the Endangerment Finding, a scientific determination that underpins a host of regulations aimed at curbing greenhouse gas emissions. Asked why previous editions of the National Climate Assessment were no longer available online, former fracking company CEO Mr Wright told the network: 'Because we're reviewing them, and we will come out with updated reports on those and with comments on those.' First published in 2000, the National Climate Assessment has long been viewed as a cornerstone of the US government's understanding of climate science, synthesising input from federal agencies and hundreds of external experts. Previous editions warned in stark terms of mounting risks to America's economy, infrastructure, and public health if greenhouse gas emissions are not curtailed. But in April, the administration moved to dismiss the hundreds of scientists working on the sixth edition. Under the Global Change Research Act of 1990, the government is legally obligated to deliver the climate assessment to Congress and the president. Mr Trump's administration and Congress have pressed forward with their pro-fossil fuel agenda – dismantling clean energy tax credits through the so-called 'Big Beautiful Bill' and opening more ecologically sensitive lands to drilling. New $90 million research facility opens at CSIRO to house specimens collected over 150 years
Millions of irreplaceable biodiversity specimens have been re-homed at a new CSIRO facility that the agency says will support research to better understand and manage Australia's natural environment. Named 'Diversity', the $90 million National Research Collections building in Canberra features temperature-controlled vaults that are bushfire and pest-resistant while designed to preserve 13 million specimens for future generations. Among the specimens, which have been collected over 150 years, are 55,000 birds, 17,000 orchids, 2.4 million moths and seven million beetles. Dr Clare Holleley, who is the director of vertebrate collections, says the facility serves as a "time machine for Australia's biodiversity". "It's taken snapshots of specimens over time, and when we put all of those little snapshots together, it puts together a picture of how Australia's biodiversity is changing. "We can learn from those trends and potentially predict what is going to happen in the future." The collections include 99 per cent of Australia's native birds, as well as exotic bird species, skeletons, mammals, reptiles stored in ethanol, eggs and frozen tissue. Relocating the specimens took about a year. The official opening of the facility coincides with National Science Week, described by CSIRO chief executive Doug Hilton as an "exciting" moment. Dr Hilton described the facility as "cutting-edge", featuring new genomics laboratories and digitisation facilities that will allow scientists to extract and share more information from research specimens. "If we can't understand how things are changing over time, it's very hard to conserve things for the future," he said. "What we have here is a facility that holds specimens in a highly secure way and allows us to digitise and automate digitisation in a way that is just the envy of the world." While there was celebration at the opening of the building, concern remains about the potential of job cuts at the agency, with the Community and Public Sector Union warning that hundreds of jobs could be axed this year. In responding to those concerns, Dr Hilton said: "Our science has to adapt". "There are programs of research that we may have to stop in order for us to be able to do new programs of research to tackle those big problems like productivity, sustainability and our sovereign science capacity." He said the agency would be reviewing its whole portfolio of science next month and then would need to make "hard choices", but wouldn't say how many jobs could be affected. The new National Research Collections building was jointly funded by the CSIRO and the Department of Education through the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy. While the building won't be open to the public, the collections will be accessible to researchers, governments, and citizen scientists worldwide.
