Vijayawada: At least seven including three women devotees died while a few others were injured in a wall collapse, at top Simhachalam Hill in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday early morning. The incident occurred when the devotees were waiting in a queue line to witness the 'Nijaroopa Darshan of Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy on the occasion of annual 'Chandanotsavam' festival.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, expressing grief through a message in X, said 'The incident reportedly happened due heavy rains. Have spoken to the District Collector and Police Commissioner and have asked for the best treatment for the injured and is monitoring the situation continuously'.
Andhra Pradesh Home Minister V Anitha expressing grief over the incident, said that heavy gale could be the reason. She also said that they would further enquire about the quality of the construction of the wall in the investigation.

VISAKHAPATNAM: Seven devotees lost their lives and several others suffered injuries after a wall collapsed at the Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple in Simhachalam during the annual Chandanotsavam festival in the early hours of Wednesday. The incident occurred in the Rs 300 queue line where devotees had gathered for the 'Nijaroopa Darshan' of the deity. Officials stated that the wall collapsed due to heavy rainfall that occurred between 2:30 am and 3:30 am. The wall, constructed just 20 days ago, is suspected to have given way due to the downpour. However, the exact cause for the wall collapse is still under investigation. The collapse took place shortly after the temple's hereditary trustee, P Ashok Gajapathi Raju, offered silk robes to the deity as part of the traditional ritual. The deceased have been identified as Kumpatla Manikanta Eswara Sesha Rao (29) and Pathi Durga Prasad Naidu (30), both natives of Korlapativaripalem, Machavaram in Ambajipeta mandal of Konaseema (Dr B R Ambedkar) district and residents of Visakhapatnam; Yedla Venkata Rao (58) from Mamidithota area in Visakhapatnam; Pilla Mahesh (30) and his wife Pilla Sailaja (27) of Chandrampalem in Madhurawada; Sailaja's aunt Gujjari Mahalakshmi (65), a resident of HB Colony; and Sailaja's mother Pyla Venkata Ratnam (45), also from Visakhapatnam. Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), fire services, and police were deployed immediately. Visakhapatnam district Collector M N Harendhira Prasad, Police Commissioner Dr Shanka Brata Bagchi, and Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha visited the site and supervised relief efforts. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, stating that the loss of life is deeply painful. He extended his sympathies to the bereaved families and wished for a swift recovery for the injured. In response to the incident, the Prime Minister announced a compensation of Rs. 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the families of those who perished, and Rs. 50,000 for those injured. A devastating wall collapse during the Chandanotsavam celebrations at Simhachalam has resulted in the tragic loss of eight lives, with ten others seriously injured. The incident occurred near the Rs. 300 ticket counter, where strong winds and rain caused the structure to fail. Rescue operations are currently underway, with personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) on-site. Home Minister Anita and the District Collector have also arrived to assess the situation. Unfortunately, it is feared that additional victims may still be trapped under the rubble. The deceased include three women, and the death toll may rise as further rescue efforts continue. The bodies of the deceased are being transported to King George Hospital.
