How alert Bengaluru resident prevented late-night flooding in Kasturinagar

1 2 Bengaluru: Timely intervention by a resident at 1.40am Monday helped drain out stagnant floodwater in Kasturinagar, where around 30 houses were inundated after heavy rain Sunday night. Three main roads — I Main, IA Main and II Main Road — in the east Bengaluru locality were partially submerged that night, leaving cars damaged, sump water contaminated and residents struggling to manage the aftermath. The root of the flooding was traced to a blocked inlet connected to the northern portion of Benniganahalli lake. Abijith MS, who leads the youth wing of Kasturinagar Welfare Association, rushed out around 11pm after his house was flooded. On inspecting the stormwater drain, he found a massive pile of mud dumped near the inlet, blocking flow of rainwater into the lake. "I reached out to one of the site staffers from the railways, and they got the pile of silt removed, helping rainwater to flow into the lake. Within 30 to 40 minutes, water level drastically reduced and houses haven't flooded during Monday and Tuesday's rain." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Secret Lives of the Romanovs — the Last Rulers of Imperial Russia! Learn More Undo While the immediate cause was the blocked inlet, residents and civic groups say the long-standing problem is lack of desilting on the northern side of the lake. According to the welfare association, multiple letters have been submitted to BBMP and the lakes department over the years — including two in the past month. — BBMP chief commissioner Maheshwar Rao visited the area earlier this year and directed officials to take up the work. Nora Menezes, president of Kasturinagar Welfare Association, said: "While desilting work may take time, we at least want the pathway to be cleared." According to a BBMP engineer, blockage caused by the railways was the direct trigger this time. But on the desilting issue, a larger bureaucratic confusion over land ownership has stalled progress. "According to our records, that part of the land where the lake is situated falls under the railways. However, just two days ago, the divisional railway manager submitted a survey claiming the land falls under BBMP. We are in the process of cross-verifying ownership," the engineer said. "Even if the lake land doesn't fall under BBMP, we are open to taking up desilting work, provided the railways give us a no-objection certificate and official approval," the engineer added.

Rain lashes Kerala; flooding at many places; IMD sounds alert

Kochi/Thrissur: Heavy rains triggered widespread waterlogging on roads and low-lying areas across Kerala on Tuesday, causing rivers and dams in several districts to swell. Parts of Ernakulam, Thrissur and Palakkad witnessed severe flooding as the downpour continued unabated. In Kochi, a private taxi, reportedly following Google Map direction, plunged into an open canal adjacent to a road that was submerged following heavy rains. Meanwhile, India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall for the next two days in state. Strong westerlies/north-westerlies are likely to prevail over Kerala and Lakshadweep areas in the lower tropospheric levels. An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over south Kerala and the neighbourhood at 3.1km above mean sea level, IMD said. Holiday has been declared on Wednesday for educational institutions in Kasaragod, Kannur and Thrissur districts. Heavy rainfall is very likely to occur in some places in Kerala on Thursday and Friday as well, IMD said. On Tuesday, heavy rains lashed different parts of Thrissur leading to waterlogging in several low-lying areas and choking of traffic within the city limits. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Treatment That Might Help You Against Knee Pain (Search Here) Kneepain | Search Search Now Undo However, there are no reports of human casualties or major loss of properties. Chelakkara experienced a flash flood-like situation, with muddied water gushing from hilly areas, even reaching the town. The incident triggered fear of landslips in the hill ranges, but this was ruled out by officials who visited the site. City areas like Patturaikkal, Mundupalam and Aquatic Lane, near Ashwini Hospital, also experienced waterlogging. Several people were shifted to safer places and dinghy boats were deployed to shift some elderly persons. The waterlogging affected the functioning of Ashwini Hospital for some time. Hill ranges such as Palappilli and Vellikulangara also reported waterlogging. Fisherfolk who ventured into the sea ignoring warnings from officials were forced to return to shores due to intense winds. However, activists of Chalakkudy River Protection Forum and National Alliance of People's Movement (NAPM) appealed to the authorities to reduce the water storage in Peringalkoothu reservoir. Rivers, dams swell: Several dams used for power generation and irrigation in Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad and Wayanad are currently at the 'third stage of alert' due to rising water levels.

Kangra administration has already issued an alert in the downstream areas of Pong dam in the district and neighbouring Punjab after water level reached above 1,365 feet in the dam. Highway traffic diverted As roadblocks created a huge traffic jam on the Manali-Chandigarh highway, the administration diverted Kullu and Mandi-bound traffic through the alternate routes of Mandi-Kamand-Bajaura-Kullu and Pandoh-Gohar-Chailchowk-Sundernagar. However, only light vehicles were allowed to take these routes, and heavy vehicles stayed on the highway, which was not reopened until the filing of this report.
