BREAKING NEWS ANOTHER Lionesses Euros winner quits international football after being axed by Sarina Wiegman - a week after Mary Earps walked out on England
Lionesses star Fran Kirby has announced her retired from international football with immediate effect, less than a month before Euro 2025 begins. Kirby, 31, has been a key player for England for more than a decade, racking up 77 caps for her country. The attacking midfielder, who plays for Brighton, started all six of the Lionesses games during their memorable Euro 2022 triumph. However, Kirby was informed by Sarina Wiegman that she would not be part of the squad for this summer's international tournament and subsequently made the decision to hang up her boots. Reflecting on her choice, Kirby told BBC Sport: 'It is something I have been thinking about for over a year. I knew this was going to be my last major tournament. 'The plan was to retire after the Euros but after speaking to Sarina I'm not going to make the squad. 'It was like a dagger to my heart but also a weight off my shoulders all at the same time. It was emotional for both of us but we both respected what each person was saying.' Kirby was named in Sarina Weigman's squad for the Uefa Nations League matches against Portugal and Spain but was informed she would not be selected for the Euros starting on 2 July. In her first interview after announcing her retirement, Kirby said: ' "When I woke up in the morning after telling Sarina, I didn't feel any regret," added Kirby. "That's when I knew I'd made the right decision. "I've been on this team for a long time, it's not going to be a shock that it was coming to an end. "You get to a certain age and there are some really good youngsters that are coming through."

Fran Kirby announces international retirement ahead of Euro 2025
Fran Kirby has announced her retirement from international football becoming the second Lioness to retire ahead of the European Championship following the previous departure of goalkeeper Mary Earps. Kirby's retirement begins with immediate effect and she was left out of the England squad that suffered a 2-1 defeat to Spain in their final Nations League match on Tuesday evening. She was also informed that she would not be part of England's Euro 2025 squad. The midfielder won 77 caps and scored 19 goals with England having represented her country at four major tournaments famously winning Euro 2022. As well as success at the last European Championship, she was part of the bronze-medal winning squad at the Fifa Women's World Cup 2015. Kirby made her international debut for England in August 2014, scoring in a 4-0 win against Sweden and her last appearance came at Wembley as the Lionesses defeated Portugal 6-0 in the Nations League last Friday. Announcing her retirement Kirby wrote: 'After being in the England team since I was 21, it's time to close that chapter of my life. I didn't ever want this day to come, but I cannot tell you how proud I am it happened. It's been the biggest honour to represent my country, one that I had only dreamt about as a young girl. I've played with incredible players, worked with some incredible managers, played in some amazing tournaments and have some irreplaceable memories. 'My journey has been full of ups and downs, setbacks and achievements. Enough has been said and written about those, but regardless of whatever was thrown at me, I want you all to know that every time I put on that England badge I gave 100%. Every single call up, I accepted my role and did whatever was needed for the team. I wanted England to win. I've always been there to help England win. 'My mum had a dream of me representing my country, and I'm so proud I was able to do that and play in front of you all. I will never, ever forget the noise when my name is read out at a stadium. I was first selected when I was playing in WSL 2, I played a part in the game-changing World Cup, winning bronze in 2015, creating some memories of a lifetime. Starting in every game and winning the Euros in 2022 was a dream come true, to be a part of change in women's football was one of the best experiences I could have ever imagined. Thank you to you all, for embracing me as a young girl from Reading who had a dream. I hope you all know, wearing that badge was the greatest honour. To every young girl that suffers setbacks, just remember you can. You can. Forever a Lioness, Fran'. Addressing her retirement in an interview with the BBC, Kirby revealed that her plan was to retire following England's Euro 2025 campaign but missing out on making the squad forced her hand. 'It is something I have been thinking about for over a year,' she said, 'I knew this was going to be my last major tournament. The plan was to retire after the Euros but after speaking to Sarina I'm not going to make the squad. "It was like a dagger to my heart but also a weight off my shoulders all at the same time. It was emotional for both of us but we both respected what each person was saying." England boss, Sarina Wiegman, addressed Kirby's departure and claimed the midfielder was 'an inspiration' for what she achieved on the pitch. Wiegman said: 'Fran has given so much to England and has been an inspiration to so many for what she has achieved on and off the pitch. I have loved working with her, she is an amazing player and a great person. I fully understand her decision to say goodbye at this point in her wonderful career, and we will always be grateful for her incredible contribution to the team. 'I am just happy that she will continue to show her top ability in club football. Fran is a unique talent and plays football in a way that excites the fans and has earned the respect of all who have played with and against her. We will miss her of course and I look forward to the chance to honour her in the right way later this year.'

Revealed: Lewis Hamilton APOLOGISED off-camera to Sky Sports presenter after terse interview following Spanish GP - where Ferrari star made a brutal admission about his team
Lewis Hamilton issued an off-air apology to Sky Sports presenter Rachel Brookes following his downbeat interview following the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday. The Ferrari driver came home in seventh but was bumped up one place after Max Verstappen careered into George Russell, an incident which saw him demoted down to 10th. Unable to keep up with the two McLarens and Verstappen, Hamilton was told to let Charles Leclerc pass him early in the race, giving his team-mate a leg up as he went on to finish third. Hamilton's frustrations were increased when he was passed by Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg on the penultimate lap of the race. The 40-year-old, who joined Ferrari on a £40million-deal this year, was visibly frustrated when interviewed by Brookes for Sky Sports after the race. Pressed on his comment over team radio that there was 'something wrong' with his car, and for his immediate reaction to the race, Hamilton replied: 'Not particularly, it was not a great day. The strategy was good, the team did a great job. Just, that's it.' Brookes then told Hamilton: 'I hate seeing you in this mood.' Hamilton quickly responded, replying: 'Well what do you want me to say? I had a really bad day and I've got nothing to say. 'It was a difficult day, I've got nothing else to add to it. There's no point explaining it. It's not your fault, I've just not got anything to say.' Brookes admitted she hopes Ferrari will be able to find a fix for his woes, but Hamilton said: 'I'm sure they won't, the answer is probably just me.' Sky Sports commentator David Croft, speaking on T he Fast and The Curious podcast, has now revealed Hamilton had apologised to Brookes off-camera for the nature of the interview. '[Lewis Hamilton] was really down on himself, and no one likes to see that because at the end of the day, whether you're a fan or not, Lewis Hamilton is the greatest racing driver we've ever seen,' Croft said. 'Statistically, he is the greatest. I think he's the greatest even without the stats. He wears his heart on his sleeve and should be applauded for that because it does a lot of good when he wears his heart on his sleeve. 'He did apologise to Rachel Brookes for being so down in the dumps off camera. He said, "I'm really sorry about that, I'm just so down". 'And that just shows the extent that he really was down. He's not putting this on for the cameras, trust me. And once again, it's right after the race. He's not had time for a debrief. He's not had time to have a chat with his race engineer. 'So he probably didn't know the extent of whatever damage the car had at the time he spoke to Rachel. 'And he probably didn't realise that it was the car that was hindering him more so than his driving in that one. 'And look, when you're in a Ferrari and you're overtaken by Nico Hülkenberg, albeit in a Ferrari-powered Sauber, you're going to question, 'Is it me really? Am I doing something wrong here?' Because it just didn't go for him really from the outset.' Reports have since claimed Hamilton had picked up floor damage during the race, which may have impacted his Ferrari in the closing stages on Sunday. Hamilton currently trails Ferrari team-mate Leclerc by 23 points in the drivers' championship, with the seven-time world champion is sixth in the overall standings. Hamilton has finished six of his first nine Ferrari races outside of the top five since making the lucrative move.
