US economist Jeffrey Sachs has criticised President Donald Trump for slapping hefty tariffs on India, denouncing the policy as both "stupid" and saying it "serves no purpose". Speaking to ANI, Sachs said Trump's move reflects hostility toward the BRICS alliance of India, China, Russia, Brazil and South Africa. "This makes no sense. It's not true. It's failing. Putting the surcharge on India was as stupid as it could be from any norm. It serves no purpose," he remarked. Sachs described Trump as "delusional" and blasted Washington's long-standing habit of exercising global dominance. "The US has exercised its dominant power for so long, they think they can boss every other part of the world around," he said. According to Sachs, the 50% duties slapped on Indian imports, triggered by New Delhi's oil trade with Russia, are not only damaging to America's own economy but also breach global rules. "Everything about the tariffs is wrong. It's destructive for the US economy. It violates international law. It's a breakdown of our political system. Trump's policies are doomed to fail," he warned. The economist also advised India to take a cautious view of Washington, arguing that New Delhi's long-term interests will not be safeguarded by leaning on the US for defence or trade. "US politicians don't care at all about India. Please understand this. India is not going to reap long-term security by siding with the United States in the Quad against China. India is a great power that has an independent standing in the world," Sachs said. Instead, he pointed to China, Russia and Brazil as India's "real partners," cautioning against the belief that India could seamlessly substitute China in global supply chains. Even if India aids in diversifying US sourcing, Sachs said, it should not expect a "great trade relationship" with Washington. He has previously called Trump's tariffs "unconstitutional," arguing they expose deep flaws in America's economic and foreign strategy.

Nashik: Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut said the Supreme Court verdict on the counting of votes polled through EVM for the sarpanch post of Haryana's Bavanu Lakhu village, where the SC reversed the presiding officer's decision after three years, indicates that BJP will cease to exist if the counting of EVM votes nationwide is conducted properly. Raut was in Nashik on Friday. Speaking to reporters, he said Mohit Kumar lost the sarpanch election in the village and challenged the results in higher courts until the case reached Supreme Court over about three years. "Mohit Kumar believed in what he claimed, that the presiding officer had transferred the votes meant for him into the name of the opponent. The SC got the votes counted. When we lose elections, we keep crying in the name of govt and election commission. Instead, what we need to do is challenge the decision in the court of law and stand by what we claim. If this happens, this will be a problem for BJP and it will cease to exist," said Raut. "This indicates that Narendra Modi was elected prime minister only through EVM scam. Same is the case with Devendra Fadnavis, who was elected Maharashtra chief minister," Raut added. Am working for Nashik, says Bhujbal amid guardian ministership tussle
Nashik: Against the backdrop of Shiv Sena and BJP 's tussle for the Nashik district guardian minister post, NCP's food and civil supplies minister Chhagan Bhujbal says he's dedicated to working for Nashik and had thus declined to go Gondia for the govt programme of flag hoisting on Aug 15. WRD minister Girish Mahajan hoisted the Tricolour at a govt event in Nashik on Friday, while Bhujbal hoisted the national flag at the NCP office in Nashik. The national Tricolour was hoisted by Mahajan at Nashik on Jan 26 (Republic Day) as well, when Bhujbal was not a minister. When questioned by reporters about the appointment of Nashik guardian minister, Mahajan, who represents the Jamner assembly seat in Jalgaon, said, "At present, I am hoisting the flag at Nashik. Step by step, things will develop further." However, he added that the decision on the district guardian minister post rests with govt, and the chief minister and the two deputy chief ministers would take a call on the matter soon. Mahajan had been announced as the guardian minister in Nashik on Jan 17, but govt stayed the decision the following day. Similarly, the appointment of NCP's Aditi Tatkare as guardian minister for Raigad was also stayed. Shiv Sena has staked a claim on both positions as it had them in the previous govt. Responding to Mahajan's remarks on guardian ministership, Bhujbal said, "I am working for the city and the district, and when told to go to Gondia, I declined. Even in the past, I was told to be the guardian minister of Dhule, but even then, my stand was that I am for Nashik and working for Nashik." Without naming anyone, Bhujbal said, "Everybody likes Nashik. But ensure that you do not forget Jalgaon and even the assembly constituency you represent." The NCP has seven MLAs, of which three are ministers, while Shiv Sena has two MLAs, one of whom is a minister. BJP has five MLAs in Nashik district, none of whom is a minister.
