Serious two-vehicle crash closed Highway 6 near iconic swing bridge
A serious collision between a transport truck and a passenger vehicle has closed Highway 6 in both directions near Little Current, with one driver sustaining life-threatening injuries.

Ontario Provincial Police responded to the crash near Goat Island Road in Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands Township at approximately 6:15 p.m. on Monday. The highway remains closed between the Little Current Swing Bridge and Sunshine Valley Road near Birch Island, with delays expected to last several hours.
'One driver has sustained serious, life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital by ambulance,' said OPP Const. Berkley Parisien in an interview with CTV News Monday evening.
The fire department also assisted at the scene.
Investigation, cleanup could take hours
OPP confirmed only two drivers were involved – the operators of the passenger vehicle and the transport truck – though bystanders stopped to help. 'We want to thank those people for stopping,' said Parisien.
If the injured driver's condition remains critical, traffic reconstructionists may be called in, extending the closure. 'That can take… several hours because they have to travel, sometimes from Sudbury, sometimes from Sault Ste. Marie,' Parisien said.
Cleanup by tow trucks could further delay reopening, with worst-case estimates ranging from three to seven hours.
Authorities urge patience, warn against distracted driving
Parisien noted a recent increase in crashes on Highway 6 and Highway 17, attributing many to distracted or impatient driving. 'A lot of the common things that we see… are impatient drivers making dangerous decisions and people not paying attention,' she said, citing texting, other distractions and impaired driving as recurring issues.
With summer traffic intensifying, Parisien urged caution: 'The bridge is kind of backing things up… We see a lot of impatient drivers making dangerous decisions.'
Public asked to check 511 for updates
OPP officials have advised motorists to avoid the area and monitor the Ontario Ministry of Transportation's Traveller Information website (Ontario.ca/511) or OPP social media feeds for updates.
'Avoid calling 911 about (road closures),' said Parisien. 'That just clogs up the phone lines and can make it harder for actual emergencies to get through.'
The investigation remains ongoing and no further details were immediately released by authorities.

Long weekend getaways bring traffic jams and police crackdowns
The long weekend often brings long delays and congested highways, and this year is no different. Drivers heading out of the city Thursday encountered significant traffic, particularly near the Highway 407 and Highway 400 interchange approaching Barrie. 'The highways were terrible. We got on the 407 and right when we hit close to the 400 near Barrie, it was just non-stop brake lights,' said one frustrated driver. 'We even took Friday off to miss the traffic, and I think we hit more traffic today (Thursday) than we would have tomorrow.' Ontario Provincial Police is reminding drivers they will be out in full force all weekend, cracking down on dangerous driving behavior. 'We're focusing on speeding, distracted driving, seatbelt use, and impaired driving,' said Sgt. Joe Brisebois with the OPP. 'And this weekend, there's also a focus on the Move Over Law.' That law requires drivers to move over when approaching a stopped emergency vehicle on the highway. Police are also issuing warnings about unsafe or unsecured loads on vehicles. 'That's dangerous,' added Sgt. Brisebois. 'It could cause a collision, go through someone's windshield, people can get injured or, even worse, it could lead to a fatality.' Gas prices were sitting just below $1.40 per litre in the morning. Many drivers say they're aware of what's coming and some are preparing accordingly. 'Every long weekend they put radar out on the highway,' said another motorist. 'And you don't like that? Of course not. Anyway, I go 118 km/h or whatever, but yeah... on long weekends, you're guaranteed to have police out there.' And that's exactly what police want drivers to keep in mind. There's zero tolerance this long weekend on the roads and highways and drivers should be prepared for delays almost the entire way.

Province invests $500K to support local skills training in automotive industry
Jill Dunlop, Simcoe North MPP, announced a substantial investment on Thursday to train locals who are interested in working in the automotive industry. In a news release, Dunlop confirmed that the province is investing nearly $500,000 to help Simcoe North residents get the skills they need to land 'good-paying, in-demand' jobs in the industry. The funding is sourced from the province's Skills Development Fund (SDF). 'As MPP for Simcoe North, I'm proud to support the Ontario government's investment through Round 5 of the Skills Development Fund,' said Dunlop in the news release. 'This substantial funding will empower Masterful Tec in Midland to expand their registered apprenticeship program, giving more people the opportunity to gain in-demand skills and build rewarding careers in the skilled trades. Investments like this are crucial for growing our local workforce, supporting businesses, and strengthening our economy for the future.' The province says its SDF training stream is available for applicants that include employers, industry associations, labour unions, hospitals, and others. ZF, a tech company that supplies systems for passenger and commercial vehicles, has a branch in Midland and helped develop the Masterful Tec program. 'The Masterful Tec registered apprentice program has been developed by ZF Lifetec in Midland to meet current and future labour market challenges and introduces a hybrid program that integrates traditional time-based and technology on the job learning and competency-based education, which allows workers to progress at their own pace', said Gail Gillian from ZF Lifetec in Midland. 'The long-term impact and effectiveness of this program will not only equip apprentices with essential skills for their current roles but also foster a culture of continuous learning and adaptability for the future.' The province adds that its SDF has helped connect more than 500,000 jobseekers find good-paying and fulfilling careers close to home.

Essex County OPP are reminding of increased traffic and road closures in Leamington this weekend. The Hogs for Hospice motorcycle rally will take place, beginning Friday and wrapping up on Sunday.
