
Rematch review - Rocket League without the cars
There's finally an alternative to EA Sports FC, with Sloclap's 5v5 street football game offering less serious and more arcade style action.
Away from the ever-growing realism (and correspondingly rapacious commercialism) of EA Sports FC, there's clearly a desire among gamers for a more arcade style football gaming experience. That's lead to the venerable Sensible Soccer being reinvented as Sociable Soccer and now Sloclap – previously known for the beat 'em-up Sifu – has taken to the pitch with a clever and imaginative offering entitled Rematch.
Rematch is basically what you would get if you stripped out the single-player options from EA Sports FC's Be A Pro mode and turned it into a standalone, online-only game. Or, if you prefer, it's Rocket League, except with footballers instead of cars. It lets you control just one player on a football pitch surrounded by glass walls, which the ball bounces off, in six minute matches which can be contested by two teams of three, four, or five players.
It's online-only, with no local multiplayer and no way to play on your own except in practice and free play. Similarly to Sifu, it has a pretty distinctive and quite complex control system; shot direction, for example, is determined by the right stick (with the left stick controlling aftertouch), yet you set the direction of passes and lobs with the left stick.
In Rematch, there are quite a few skills to master, among them dribbling tricks, nailing the timing of button stabs to intercept balls passing nearby (the ball acquires a diamond-shaped highlight to indicate when that's possible), timing and directing your dives if you're in goal, and even lobbing passes over incoming players – which requires a modifier rather than a single button press.
Perhaps the easiest skill to perform in the game is a lunging tackle, which indicates the complexity of the rest of the control system; although once you dive in for one of those, it takes your player a while to get back to their feet. At least you don't have to worry about being sent off for taking out the opposition, though: there are no referees or fouls in Rematch and a street or cage football vibe very much prevails.
That's telegraphed by the cartoon style visuals, which by default are pastel-ish but are often more luridly coloured and reminiscent of Fortnite or Overwatch. Which is something of a giveaway, since Rematch is obviously an attempt to make the next big online team game, as opposed to anything resembling a traditional arcade style football game. The whole football aspect can be viewed as something of a Trojan horse, similar to how Rocket League never really acknowledges it's actually just football with cars.

When you play it, Rematch very much feels like a wheel-less version of Rocket League. In that context, Rematch's unusual control system works brilliantly. It's easy enough to learn but definitely hard to master and when you do get to grips with it, and make it into the big leagues, you'll find entire matches hinging on perfectly executed moves, made at precisely the right moment, which is classic esports fodder.
In terms of achieving that mastery, Rematch – despite being about as minimal as it's possible to be in terms of game modes and general structure – gives you all that you need. There's a basic tutorial, called the Prologue, plus other tutorials that focus more closely on honing specific skills and putting them all together.
Then it lets you jump into quick matches; it's wise to start with the 3v3 ones, which are frenetic, unstructured and can be navigated with a mastery of the basics. Whoever is nearest to your goal, for example, becomes the keeper, but in 3v3, a lot of goals tend to be scored from way out, with whoever was in goal having gone for a jaunt upfield. Jumping up to 4v4 requires a bit more teamwork and discipline.
In all modes, every time a goal is scored Rematch puts you in another position on the pitch from the kick-off, which you can adhere to or ignore. Although if you abandon goalkeeping duties and concede cheaply, you might receive some opprobrium as by default, Rematch keeps its players' microphones live. Thankfully, you can respond to in-game events by picking from a small number of text phrases – mostly encouraging, although 'Sorry' is also included.
The 5v5 mode feels like it will become the default for gamers who are serious about playing Rematch. It's the most structured and rewards discipline and positional sense more than the 3v3 and 4v4 modes. Matchmaking, at least in the early stages of the game, feels pretty impressive; we did occasionally encounter the odd player with better skills than us, but not to an annoying degree.
Sensibly, Rematch forces you to work through quick matches in order to reach level 5 status, before letting you loose in its pre-season. That stratification should help enormously with matchmaking. Beyond the global league, you can set up one-off custom matches with a bunch of friends (generating a code allowing other invitees to join) and that's about it. Structurally, it's early days for Rematch, which will undoubtedly add features as it becomes more established, and a call for feedback from players when you boot it up emphasises that. More Trending
As with its rival online games, Rematch contains a vast array of cosmetic items and skins which can be purchased using real money (somewhat expensively, in our opinion, especially given that it's not a free game), although as you progress you do slowly earn currency with which to buy them. That will probably annoy some, but it's an inevitability in a modern game of this nature.
Patches already appear to have fixed some stability problems, that were reported in the game's early stages, at least for the PC version. It seems the PC is the lead platform at this stage, with no console cross-play at the moment – although hopefully it'll be added later.
Rematch is a fun, thoroughly playable and cleverly constructed online team game, that has a great chance of becoming an esports staple. However, it currently feels very much half-finished, so it will be fascinating to see how quickly Sloclap can convert its potential into something that becomes a pillar of the gaming world. Just don't be fooled into believing that it's the future of arcade football games: it's a Rocket League competitor dressed in a football kit.
In Short: A clever and hugely enjoyable online team game, even at this early stage in its career -although it feels more like a rival to Rocket League than EA Sports FC.
Pros: Arcane but inspired control system, that's easy to learn but hard to master. Great street football vibe and working your way up from 3v3 to 5v5 is a satisfying journey.
Cons: Currently missing a lot of options and features. Initially more stable on PC than consoles. Paying for cosmetic items is as gross as ever and the potential for in-game verbal abuse is high.

Capcom show what Resident Evil Requiem was going to be before they changed it
Capcom has explained how Resident Evil Requiem started life as an online open world game, and it's chilling to think about. Before Resident Evil Requiem was officially revealed at Summer Game Fest, rumours claimed it would be an open world game starring Leon S. Kennedy. Capcom has since explained why Leon isn't the protagonist, with game director Koshi Nakanishi highlighting how the character is 'actually quite a bad match for horror' because he's not the kind of person who would 'jump at something like a bucket falling'. As such, Resident Evil Requiem features a new 'introverted' lead, in FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft. Following the Capcom Spotlight showcase, the studio has now confirmed it did experiment with an online, open world for Resident Evil Requiem, but these plans were dropped when it realised it 'wasn't what fans wanted'. Speaking in an extended developer diary, which is available to registered members on Capcom's website, Nakanishi shared a brief, blurry glimpse at the early online experiments for Resident Evil Requiem. 'You might have heard some of the rumours, things like an online Resident Evil or an open world Resident Evil, which we spent some time experimenting with,' he said. 'But in the end, although we had some interesting concepts, we realised that it wasn't what fans wanted to see or play. So we went back to the drawing board and created what led to Resident Evil Requiem.' It's easy to imagine how negative the reaction to an online Resident Evil game would be, because there's already been so many bad examples. Resident Evil Re:Verse was Capcom's last (terrible) attempt to make an online multiplayer title in the series, which is set to be shut down on June 29, after being released as a freebie with Resident Evil Village. Before that, there's been asymmetrical multiplayer jaunts in Resident Evil: Resistance, and co-op games like Operation Raccoon City and Resident Evil Outbreak. Interestingly, the protagonist in Resident Evil Requiem, Grace Ashcroft, is the daughter of investigative reporter Alyssa Ashcroft – a character from Resident Evil Outbreak. To reinforce the point, Capcom highlighted that Resident Evil Requiem is a 'single-player offline game', and presumably no longer open world, although it didn't exactly specify the latter. All of this seemingly corroborates rumours last month, from series insider Dusk Golem, who claimed development on Resident Evil Requiem began in 2017 with Leon S. Kennedy and Jill Valentine as the protagonists. He said it was originally 'trying to be the opposite' of Resident Evil 7, as a 'big open world multiplayer game', but it got a 'heavy reboot' in 2021 when Resident Evil Village was released. Later in the video on Capcom's website, Nakanishi said the sequel takes the emphasis on fear seen in Resident Evil 7 a 'step further', describing the gameplay as 'addictive fear'. More Trending 'For us, an 'addictive fear' means even though you might be scared, you just can't stop playing,' he added. 'You want to see what's next. You die, but wonder, 'What if I tried this? Next time I'll do it differently'. And when you overcome that fear, the sense of accomplishment is huge. 'You want to keep going – as it's almost addictive. That's the kind of gameplay experience that we are aiming for in Resident Evil Requiem.' The upcoming sequel follows Grace as she investigates a series of deaths in Raccoon City, 30 years after it was bombed in Resident Evil 3. It's set to feature both a first and third person perspective, an option only added via DLC for Resident Evil Village. EA FC 26 cover star leaked – who will be on the front of the new game?
Leakers have revealed almost all there is to know about EA FC 26 before EA Sports has had the chance to announce anything itself It looks like we now know who is set to star on the front of EA FC 26, with the EA FC 25 cover star leaked on social media. We're still a few months away from the release of EA FC 26, and with EA Sports yet to reveal anything about the new game, you'd expect hype surrounding the next EA Sports FC instalment to be low. Well, this isn't quite the case, with a host of EA FC 26 leaks being made across social media over the last few weeks. Without anything being revealed by EA, it now seems that players know nearly everything there is to know about EA FC 26. Details such as the games release date, new Icons and new card designs have all been leaked over the last few weeks, but now, the EA FC 26 cover star has been leaked, likely spoiling any big reveal or surprise that EA had planned. EA FC 26 cover star leaked In EA FC 24, Erling Haaland was on the front of the game. EA FC 25 saw Jude Bellingham make his debut as the frontman. And now, according to leaker @FutSheriff, Bellingham will be the EA FC 26 cover star, with EA sticking with the Real Madrid and England international for another year. In all honestly, this was sort of expected from most people. It's likely that Bellingham agreed to a multi-year deal with EA when he became the cover star for EA FC 25, so at least one more year of the Englishman seems appropiate. There were other players rumoured to be on the cover of EA FC 26, but there were some players we could rule out instantly. Could it have been Cristiano Ronaldo? Lionel Messi? Lamine Yamal? Well, we already knew for a fact it couldn't have been any of these. Yamal was revealed as an ambassador for eFootball, previously known as Pro Evolution Soccer (PES), earlier this year, meaning the Spaniard cannot be on the cover of EA FC 26. Messi has also been an embassador for eFootball for a few years now, while Ronaldo is an investor and ambassador for free-to-play football game UFL. It is a shame that the cover star has been leaked so far in advance, as it does take away any sort of surprise factor when EA makes its official announcement. For EA FC 24, there were no leaks about Haaland being the cover star, so when it was officially revealed, it was a surprise for everyone. But, it seems that leaks are more prominent than ever ahead of EA FC 26. Let's hope that EA can find a way to limit these when the game's eventually released.

Hotel Dusk director reveals new Switch 2 exclusive 'designed for adult women'
Arc System Works has announced a bunch of new games, as the lead developer behind Guilty Gear gets frank about the gaming landscape. Developer Arc System Works is primarily known for fighting games like Guilty Gear Strive, Dragon Ball FighterZ, and Granblue Fantasy Versus, but the studio has dabbled in other genres over its history. In a special showcase this week, the studio announced several new projects beyond its usual fighting game remit – with no mention of its upcoming partnership with Sony on Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls. The first surprise was a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive entitled Dear Me, I Was. It's directed by Maho Taguchi, who described the game as being a 'textless adventure game', which she says is 'designed for adult women'. Taisuke Kanasaki serves as the game's art director and he's best known for directing the Hotel Dusk games on the Nintendo DS. Dear Me, I Was has a similar visual style and uses rotoscoping to create its hand-drawn watercolour visuals, whereby live-action footage is traced over and embellished. A synopsis reads: 'In this story, you will relive the life of a certain woman. Experience joy, sorrow, and growth through her oridinary and humble life. Witness the story she weaves in a life interconnected with others.' As shown in the trailer, it seems drawing will be a key gameplay mechanictoo. The other big surprise was a new action game called Damon And Baby, which was described as being part of a 'new pillar' for Arc System Works, to help them diversify outside of fighting games. Based on the trailer, Damon And Baby looks somewhere between a top-down Zelda game and an old school role-player, with a vibrant anime art style. No release date or platforms were announced. Speaking in the showcase about the project, Guilty Gear creator and Arc System Works chief creative officer, Daisuke Ishiwatari explained how Damon And Baby represents a new ethos for the studio, as it becomes more difficult for gaming companies to create new IP. 'The game market is tough now,' Ishiwatari said. 'To overcome that Arc System Works has launched a new project. It's an action game project… Let me explain. Arc System Works is a fighting game company. I'm sure most of you recognise us as so. 'However, to achieve a new brand, where we are known for quality mid-range action games, we decided to establish a new pillar outside of fighting games. 'You might be wondering why I specifically use the term mid-range. There are many reasons, but one is that even creators themselves can enjoy striving for their dreams. In recent years, with AAA blockbusters and excellent indie titles gaining popularity, it has become extremely risky for companies to create new series. 'This has led to dwindling opportunities for young creators to have their own projects. We feel the need to focus our efforts towards the future a decade from now, such as to build stable development schemes and to accumulate technology and know-how.' He goes onto describe how Guilty Gear, like Damon And Baby, had humble origins, adding: 'Our flagship title Guilty Gear has now become a million selling copy work – but its very first instalment was a small-scale project. From there, over many long years, we built a foundation that could guarantee a certain level of quality in the fighting games genre. 'Similarly we hope to take a step with this project that will eventually lead to bigger dreams. And precisely because they are mid-range titles, this will create many opportunities to produce many titles and cultivate many creators, and we hope that will become one of the future values of Arc System Works.' It's a surprisingly honest overview of the current gaming climate, especially considering he was saying this during a promotional showcase – and an approach many Western developers would be wise to take inspiration from. Elsewhere in the presentation, several titles published by Arc System Works were also revealed. These included a new Bubble Bobble game, entitled Bubble Bobble Sugar Dungeons, where the main gimmick appears to be procedurally-generated stages where the 'structure, platforms, and enemy placements change for a fresh experience every time'. Visually, it looks like a bit of a downgrade compared to the last game in the series, Bubble Bobble 4 Friends, with a mobile-ish aesthetic. Bubble Bobble Sugar Dungeons is developed by Taito and published by Arc System Works everywhere outside of Japan, and is set to be released across PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Steam in winter 2025. More Trending Another new game published by Arc System Works is role-player Demon's Night Fever, developed by Drecom and SuperNiche. The latter was founded by former Nippon Ichi Software president Sohei Niikawa, who helped create the Disgaea series. Demon's Night Fever is slated to launch in 2026 and, during the presentation, Niikawa described the game's 'very, very long' genre as: 'Enemies? Allies? Kill kill kill! The more you die, the stronger you become! Raising Speedrunning Simulation RPG.' He added: 'I know you feel it's nonsense, and I feel the same when saying it myself. But that's how outrageous this game is, so we hope you look forward to it!' Other games shown at the event include previously announced titles Double Dragon Revive, Absolum from the creators behind Streets Of Rage 4, and HunterxHunter NenxImpact, a fighting game based on the popular manga.
