Regional IFFK to kick off in Kozhikode on August 8
The much-awaited four-day event will begin on August 8 and conclude on August 11 with screenings at Kairali, Sree, and Coronation cinemas.
Cinephiles have responded enthusiastically, with over 1,400 delegate registrations prompting the organisers to close online registration. However, spot registration will continue at Kairali where delegate passes will be distributed from 11 a.m. on August 7. A photo exhibition honouring the late writer and Jnanpith Award winner M.T. Vasudevan Nair and his cinematic journey will be inaugurated at the same venue.
While screenings will commence from August 8 morning, the official inauguration will be held at 5 p.m. The festival will showcase 58 films from around the world, including 14 titles from the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) competition section.
Highlights include Brazil's Malu, winner of the IFFK Golden Crow Pheasant Award, and Iran's Me, Maryam, the Children and 26 Others by Farshad Hashemi, winner of the Silver Crow Pheasant for Best Director. Fazil Muhammed's Malayalam film Feminichi Fathima, recipient of the IFFK Audience Jury Award, is also part of the lineup.
Other notable screenings include Underground: Orange (Chile), Memories of a Burning Body (Costa Rica), Linda (Argentina), Human (Spain), Elbow (Turkey), East of Noon (Egypt), and An Oscillating Shadow (Chile). Indian entries feature Appuram (Malayalam) by Indu Lakshmi, Body (Hindi), and Rhythm of Dammam (Konkani) by Jayan Cherian.
The festival's 58 films are divided into World Cinema (14), Indian Cinema (7), and Malayalam Cinema (11) sections. The Kaleidoscope section features Malayalam and Assamese films, while Female Gaze and Festival Favourites will present three and five films, respectively. Veteran actress Shabana Azmi's film Ankur will also be screened.

What compelled filmmaker M.K. Ramadas to document the life of Cheruvayal Raman was his desire to bring the story of the tribal farmer from Wayanad, who lives for nature, to the common person on screen. His 42-minute documentary Nekal - Chronicle of the Paddy Man, which portrays the septuagenarian agriculturalist and Padma Shri recipient, earned a special mention in the non-feature category at the 71st National Film Awards for 2023, announced last week. Incidentally, Mr. Ramadas began filming in 2018, well before Mr. Raman received the nation's fourth-highest civilian award. Speaking on the sidelines of the ongoing Regional International Film Festival of Kerala (RIFFK) in Kozhikode on Saturday (August 9), Mr. Ramadas said that the project sprouted from his connection to the agricultural heritage of Wayanad. 'Having been born in Wayanad, harvests and seeds have been a constant throughout my life,' he told The Hindu. During his childhood, he and his father would acquire seeds from the Kuruma community, an experience that fundamentally shaped his appreciation of farming traditions. For many years, Mr. Raman has been safeguarding 55 indigenous rice varieties, as well as diverse species of trees, herbs, and spices across his three-acre plot. 'I had preserved 60 varieties until 2021, but advancing age and health complications compelled me to reduce seed collection,' he acknowledged following his 2023 Padma Shri announcement. Determined to capture the essence of Mr. Raman's life and philosophy, Mr. Ramadas shadowed the farmer's endeavours for five years, documenting the natural rhythms of agricultural life — sowing, cultivating, and harvesting. 'My intention was simply to document his life without any intrusions,' he said. His journalistic background, Mr. Ramadas said, proved instrumental in establishing connections with dedicated cinematographers, producers, and others who recognised the project's significance and offered their support. 'Nekal also has a political message, the political statement of a farmer to live in a democracy,' Mr. Ramadas said. Both Mr. Ramadas and Mr. Raman believe seeds are not private property but a gift of nature. 'We are only here to take care of them. Seeds pass from one generation to another - this has always been nature's order,' Mr. Ramadas signed off.

Synopsis Dev Anand's 1974 film Ishk Ishk Ishk, starring Shabana Azmi and Zeenat Aman, was one of his most ambitious projects, funded by selling his house and his wife's jewellery. As recalled by his nephew, filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, the film's failure became apparent within minutes of its premiere, wiping out Anand's investment. He told Kapur that he had just thought of an idea for a new film and suggested they start working on it also recounted another instance that showcased Anand's perspective on filmmaking. During a breakfast meeting with a producer, the conversation turned to the sacrifices made for a new project. The producer admitted to selling personal possessions, including his wife's jewellery and his house, to finance the film. Without hesitation, Anand responded that this was exactly how films should be made. While Ishk Ishk Ishk turned out to be a commercial failure, the episode became a testament to Dev Anand's refusal to dwell on loss. His ability to move forward almost instantly left a deep impression on those who knew him. As Shekhar Kapur noted, watching Anand face such a setback taught valuable lessons about perseverance—an enduring part of the actor's legacy in Indian cinema.
