Ontario : The National Council of Canadian Muslims appalled by Islamophobic attack
At a press conference held after the incident, NCCM Chief Operating Officer Omar Khamissa stressed the urgent need to «act and move from words to action». «Our elected officials must acknowledge what is happening in this country and develop a real plan with real solutions», he said, as quoted by Radio-Canada.
According to police, the woman was the victim of a violent group assault early in the morning. Authorities said the individuals involved were already acting disruptively in the restaurant, describing how one of them «jumped over the counter, where the woman tried to block his path».
During the ensuing «violent struggle», «several other individuals also jumped over the counter and attacked the victim». The NCCM alleges that the attackers removed the woman's hijab—a detail not confirmed by police.
Speaking to Radio-Canada, the victim's daughter said her mother is «shaken» by the attack, which has left her «deeply affected and on edge». She added, «Our family has noticed a rise in Islamophobic attitudes and behaviors among the restaurant's customers». According to her, «this is not the first time a crime has been committed in the restaurant».

27-Year-Old Man Receives One Year in Prison for Burning Quran in Lyon
Rabat – The Lyon Criminal Court sentenced a 27-year-old man on Wednesday for his involvement in the burning of a Quran in June outside a mosque in Villeurbanne. The defendant took a Quran and burned it outside the Errahma mosque in Villeurbanne during the night of June 1-2. A witness extinguished the flames and reported the incident to mosque officials the next day. A surveillance camera documented the Islamophobic act, which led to the arsonist's quick arrest. AFP said the defendant faced charges of 'damage committed due to race, ethnicity, nationality, or religion.' The defendant denied his involvement in the Islamophobic act, claiming he was a 'victim of his illness.' He claimed he is schizophrenic, which he has been treated for since the age of 18. AFP quoted the defendant as saying: ' I understand that my act was very serious… To me, it was just a book–it wasn't directed against Muslims.' Prosecutor Hannah Tellier requested a prison sentence of 15 months in prison, noting that 'there must be a response for a society that feels hurt' by the defendant's 'transgression,' whose judgment was 'only impaired' at the time of the incident. She also cited a 'major risk of reoffending.' The judge recalled that the suspect was already convicted three times for offenses, including threats, violence based on sexual orientation or gender identity, and theft, as well as some 'absurd xenophobic remarks' made once before a sentencing judge. The sentence included a two-year ban from appearing in Villeurbanne. Many similar Islamophobic acts have stirred uproar across the world. In recent months, France has been the theater of national marches against racism and Islamophobia. One of the recent heinous attacks took place earlier this year, when a man entered a mosque and stabbed a Muslim man around 40 to 50 times while he was praying. He also insulted God, Islam, and Muslims while filming the horrific murder. Tags: Islam and the quran

Bishop Condemns Anti-Migrant Violence in Spain's Murcia
Rabat – Bishop of Cartagena, Jose Manuel Lorca Planes, has issued a public statement regarding the anti-migrant violence that erupted against North African migrants, especially Moroccans, in Murcia, Spain. In his statement , published by Vatican News, the bishop stressed that violence is 'not a solution,' emphasizing that the situation contributes to a 'deeper sense of fear and unease.' A large wave of Islamophobic attacks, xenophobia, and anti-migrant sentiment has been ongoing in Spain since Friday last week following the assault of a 68-year-old Spaniard. Converging reports claimed three youths of North African origin had beaten him up, but an ongoing investigation has yet to determine the circumstances of the case. Reports have confirmed arrests made by authorities, including 11 people apprehended for their involvement in the assault as well as anti-migrants riots. Despite swirling rumors on social media and within far-right groups, the majority of those arrested are of Spanish origin. Since the assault on the retiree, far-right groups launched violence targeting migrants and Muslims, calling for a manhunt of 'Maghrebis' or those coming from North Africa. Many have condemned the anti-migrant and Islamophobic acts, but others have been fueling tensions and blaming Moroccans for the attacks. Bishop Lorca Planes responded to the violence, urging all residents to avoid 'any form of extremism' and to offer peace, love, and forgiveness. According to reports, nearly one-third of Torre Pacheco's population is of foreign origin, with many contributing to Spain's socio-economic development, particularly in agriculture and other sectors. Earlier this week, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez condemned the wave of racism and Islamophobic attacks against migrants and Muslims. 'Racism is incompatible with democracy,' he said, noting that Spain is a country of rights, not of hate. The Moroccan consulate in Murcia also responded to the anti-migrant violence, particularly against Moroccans living in the region. 'We express our unconditional support to those affected and affirm our commitment to preserving their moral and physical integrity,' the consulate said, noting that it is constantly in contact with Spanish authorities to ensure all necessary security guarantees are provided to Moroccans. Spanish PM, Moroccan Consulate Condemn Hostile Attacks on Moroccans, Migrants
Rabat – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has responded to the troubling wave of racism and Islamophobic attacks targeting Muslims and migrants in Spain following an assault on a 68-year-old Spaniard in Torre Pacheco, in southeastern Spain. Far-right party Vox has been fueling the tensions with acutely Islamophobic and anti-migrant rhetoric. There have been social media posts and protests, calling for 'the hunt' of migrants from North Africa, especially Moroccans, blaming them for the assault that took place last week on Friday. Vox and far-right media held anti-Islam and migrants protests, chanting Islamophobic slogans and inciting hatred and violence against migrants in the European country amid an ongoing investigation and arrests of suspects allegedly involved in the incident. Responding on X, Sanchez said on Monday that 'racism is incompatible with democracy,' noting that what the country is witnessing in Torre Pacheco 'concerns us all.' 'We must speak out, act firmly, and defend the values that unite us. Spain is a country of rights, not of hate,' he said. The Moroccan consulate in Murcia also released a statement, expressing condemnation of violent, hostile actions against members of the Moroccan community in the region. The local representative said recent events have been marked by 'provocation, intimidation, and targeted violence' against Moroccans, who are now enduring a state of 'deep anxiety and tangible fear.' The consulate stressed that it is constantly in touch with relevant Spanish authorities to ensure all necessary security guarantees are provided to Moroccans. 'We express our unconditional support to those affected and affirm our commitment to preserving their moral and physical integrity,' the statement concluded. Moroccans remain the largest foreign community affiliated with Spanish social security, with 375,042 workers. Tags: bilateral ties between Morocco and SpainSpain and Morocco
