'LiDAR technology provides a remarkable boost in performance and speed, delivering up to 300 per cent improvements compared to traditional visual inspections. LiDAR offers superior accuracy and speed in evaluating road assets, delivering up to 95 per cent accuracy compared to conventional methods. It also contributes to the enhancement of data quality, facilitating more informed and efficient maintenance decisions.
'The technology also enables safe and efficient inspection of elevated assets along highways and major roads, such as lighting poles, traffic signals, and road signs, thereby improving road safety and reducing risks associated with manual inspections,' Al Banna added.
How does the technology assess roads?
LiDAR enables the daily assessment of up to 80 km of roads, representing a 96 per cent improvement over traditional methods, which typically cover only 3 km.
This capability ensures continuous monitoring of asset conditions and regular updates to data records. Assessments can be carried out while in motion at speeds ranging from 30 to 100 km/hr, without disrupting traffic flow. With a sensing range of up to 80 meters, the technology ensures comprehensive coverage of various road assets.
This advanced technology delivers highly accurate data and detailed analysis of asset conditions, supporting the long-term sustainability of the Asset Condition Index (ACI). It enables precise scheduling of maintenance activities, particularly predictive maintenance, and helps prioritise interventions based on clearly defined strategic criteria. Ultimately, this approach reinforces the sustainability and operational efficiency of Dubai's road infrastructure.

This year, 20 candidates have been selected to study within the United Arab Emirates as part of RTA's commitment to nurturing young talent and equipping them with knowledge and skills on a par with the highest international standards. The programme forms part of RTA's strategy to support national talent and achieve Emiratisation objectives by meeting its future needs across majors and strategic projects. The programme includes familiarising students with career pathways after graduation and enabling them to explore the various fields of work available at RTA and how they can contribute to them. Scholarship recipients will study at a select group of leading universities in the UAE, including the American University of Sharjah, University of Sharjah, University of Dubai, Zayed University, and the Higher Colleges of Technology. Study fields include Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Intelligent Systems Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Information Systems and Business Analytics, Mechatronics, Robotics, and other vital fields that support RTA's operational and service plans. Dubai RTA begins construction of new lane to ease Nad Al Hamar traffic
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has begun building an 850-meter lane from Ras Al Khor Road toward Nad Al Hamar Intersection, along with widening the storage lane for vehicles approaching from Al Rebat Street and turning left at the same intersection. The work is taking place near Nasser Bin Lootah Mosque and is part of the Summer 2025 Improvement Plan under RTA's 2025 Rapid Traffic Improvements initiative. The project aims to reduce congestion on Ras Al Khor Road and Al Rebat Street, improve traffic flow toward Nad Al Hamar, and enhance road safety. Completion is targeted by the end of August, with the upgrades expected to increase daily mobility, improve residents' quality of life, and support RTA's vision of becoming a leader in seamless and sustainable mobility. Once finished, the new lane will boost capacity toward Nad Al Hamar by 33%, from 4,800 to 6,400 vehicles per hour, cutting average travel time from 15 minutes to 11 minutes. The improvements are projected to enhance traffic flow by up to 27% during evening peak hours, while the widened storage lane will reduce queueing and ease access to Ras Al Khor Road. The enhancements will benefit traffic heading to Nad Al Hamar and nearby areas such as Al Rashidiya, Al Qusais, and Dubai International Airport. RTA said the expansion will also strengthen connectivity between residential communities and major destinations, improving both local and main road network efficiency.
