Nirmala Sitharaman introduces Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (Amendment) Bill, 2025 in Lok Sabha
The Bill was introduced amid opposition protests over a separate matter concerning the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. Despite the uproar, the House approved Sitharaman's motion to refer the Bill to a Select Committee for further examination.
At the heart of the proposed amendments lies the creation of a 'creditor-initiated insolvency resolution process'. This would allow creditors to begin insolvency proceedings through an out-of-court initiation mechanism for genuine business failures.
By bypassing the need for immediate judicial intervention, the measure is expected to reduce delays, lower costs, and minimise disruptions to ongoing business operations. It also aims to ease the burden on overworked tribunals while improving access to credit and enhancing India's ease of doing business ranking.
The Statement of Objects and Reasons accompanying the Bill emphasises its goal to 'maximise value for all stakeholders' and improve governance under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC). The amendments seek to refine existing provisions, introduce new tools for resolution, and harmonise procedures with internationally recognised norms.
Two major new frameworks are set to be introduced: Group Insolvency Framework – Designed to address complex corporate structures, this mechanism will enable coordinated resolution of multiple entities within the same group, preventing the value erosion that can occur when cases are handled separately.
Cross-Border Insolvency Framework – This will establish a legal basis for recognising and coordinating insolvency proceedings that span multiple jurisdictions, protecting stakeholder interests in both domestic and foreign courts and bolstering investor confidence.
If implemented effectively, these reforms could mark a turning point for India's corporate resolution landscape. By streamlining processes, reducing litigation timelines, and adopting cross-border recognition standards, the Bill is poised to make insolvency proceedings more predictable and business-friendly.
Economists suggest that the reforms could encourage greater foreign investment by signalling that India is committed to protecting creditor rights while supporting distressed businesses in genuine need of revival.
With the Bill now headed to the Select Committee, stakeholders from the financial sector, corporate community, and legal fraternity will be watching closely to see whether the final legislation preserves its intended balance between creditor empowerment and debtor protection.

NEW DELHI: The Opposition INDIA bloc is mulling moving an impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar after he asked Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi to either file an affidavit substantiating his vote theft allegations against the poll body or apologise before the country. The proposal for an impeachment motion was discussed at the INDIA bloc meeting held in this morning. Speaking to TNIE, an Opposition leader said that all members of the bloc have approved the proposal. The leader said that legal modalities will be discussed soon. "The process is similar to the impeachment of a judge," he said The Opposition parties have also decided not to cooperate with the government on the special discussion on the impact of Astronaut Shukla's space mission. The Lok Sabha is scheduled to have a two-day special discussion on the same. "We have decided not to take part in the discussion and to continue with its protests," the leader told TNIE. At a press conference on Sunday, the CEC warned Gandhi that if he failed to provide a declaration under oath within seven days, his claims of vote theft and poll rigging would be rendered "baseless and invalid." Hitting back at the poll body, Rahul Gandhi alleged that the BJP-led NDA government passed a 2023 law to prevent action against the EC as it is "helping" the saffron party and "indulging in vote chori" with them. Addressing a gathering at Aurangabad at the end of the first day of his Voter Adhikar Yatra, Gandhi said, "Today they (ECI) held a press conference. I want to ask them why the government change the law on CCTV footage of election process. Do you know that no case can be initiated against the election commissioners? In no court in India can there be a case against them."

New Delhi: South Korean giant Samsung continues to expand manufacturing of its advanced technology devices in India, including laptops, according to Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw. In a major fillip to the 'Make in India' initiative, India's electronics production has surged from $31 billion to $133 billion in a decade beginning 2014-15. The electronics exports have also seen a surge of over 47 per cent in Q1 of 2025-26 over the same quarter in 2024-25. 'Samsung continues to expand manufacturing of its advanced technology devices in 'Bharat', driven by talent and innovation,' Vaishnaw said in an X post. 'Its research unit in 'Bharat' has more than 7,000 engineers,' he added. The government has created several enablers for making India Aatmanirbhar in manufacturing. As a result, India has moved from having 2 mobile manufacturing units in 2014 to over 300. In the first quarter of current fiscal (Q1 FY26), India's traditional PC market, which includes desktops, notebooks, and workstations, saw a 7.1 per cent increase in shipments, reaching 3.39 million units, according to IDC. The market experienced a 7.1 per cent year-on-year growth in shipments, indicating a positive trend in the PC market. 'The unprecedented demand has made us allocate stocks of the Galaxy Z Fold7 across the deeper pockets of Bharat. We are immensely encouraged by the new demand surfacing from tier 4 and beyond and will continue to serve these markets in the best possible manner,' said Raju Pullan, Senior Vice President and Head at Samsung India. The company said it is witnessing unprecedented demand for the Galaxy Z Fold7, with the smartphone being 'out-of-stock' in select markets across the country. The company is taking necessary steps at its manufacturing factory in Noida to meet the unprecedented demand.

SIR is ‘new weapon' of ‘vote chori', will protect ‘one person, one vote', says Rahul Gandhi
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday (August 18, 2025) said the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls is a "new weapon" of "vote chori" and vowed to protect the 'one person, one vote' principle. He made the remarks in a post on his WhatsApp channel while talking about his meeting with a group of people who had cast their vote in the previous Lok Sabha election but their name had been deleted in the SIR exercise in Bihar. Mr. Gandhi met the group at the launch of his 'Vote Adhikar Yatra' in Sasaram on Sunday (August 17, 2025). In his post in Hindi along with a picture of the meeting, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha said, "SIR is a new weapon of vote theft. Coincidentally, these people standing with me in this picture are 'living' proof of this theft." "All of them had cast their vote in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections - but by the time Bihar assembly elections came, their identity, their existence was erased from the democracy of India," he said. "Do you know who they are? After 16 days, the yatra will conclude with a rally in Patna on September 1. The yatra is being undertaken in a hybrid mode, on foot and by vehicle, as was Gandhi's Manipur to Mumbai Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. It will pass through Aurangabad, Gaya, Nawada, Nalanda, Sheikhpura, Lakhisarai, Munger, Bhagalpur, Katihar, Purnea, Araria, Supaul, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Sitamarhi, East Champaran, West Champaran, Gopalganj, Siwan, Chhapra and Ara.
