After Shashi Tharoor's delegation expresses disappointment, Colombia withdraws statement for Pakistan

Time of India31-05-2025

NEW DELHI: After the Shashi Tharoor-led delegation to the US expressed disagreement over
Colombia
's statement supporting
Pakistan
, the state withdrew its statement and "will issue a statement of strong support for our position and understanding of our position," the Congress MP said.
"We met with the Foreign Ministry - the Senior Vice Minister received us. We had some good news: They have withdrawn their statement that disappointed us earlier and will issue a statement of strong support for our position and understanding of our position. Finally, here we are before this beautiful bust of Mahatma Gandhi on the campus of the main university," Tharoor said.
Speaking to the reporters later, he said, "There is no equivalence between those who attack our country and those who defend their own country, and our only disappointment with the earlier statement by Colombia was that it seemed to have overlooked this difference.
We're very pleased to learn that that statement has been withdrawn as you've also mentioned, and we are also very pleased that you, as representatives of the people of Colombia, are determined to stand with us for our sovereignty, for peace in the world, for peace in the subcontinent of India and that you are very, very happy that this kind of dialogue will continue between our peoples and our representatives.
"
Taranjit Singh Sandhu, former Indian ambassador to the United States and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, said that the delegation's comprehensive briefing was instrumental in prompting Colombia to reverse its stance.
"This morning we had a detailed interaction with the acting Foreign Minister and our leader and the entire team made specific points to them explaining to them the timeline which perhaps to an extent they might have missed out. The end result was that they are withdrawing one of the other statements which had come out and have promised and stated, actually quite clearly, on
terrorism
and the issue. The importance of Colombia, apart from other reasons, is also that it will be a member of the Security Council soon," he said.
Noting that Colombia understood India's position as it was once plagued by terrorism, BJP MP Shashank Mani said, "It is notable that terrorism has affected Colombia as well. However, after a long struggle, Colombia is now a peaceful country. We have come here with a message of peace. We have clearly stated that we will give a fitting response to every terrorist attack, and when it is over, we want nothing but peace."
Tharoor voiced disappointment during a press conference in Bogotá on Thursday over Colombia's stance.
He noted that India was disheartened by the Colombian government's decision to offer condolences for the casualties in Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, instead of expressing solidarity with the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack.
"We were a little disappointed in the reaction of the Colombian government, which apparently expressed heartfelt condolences on the loss of lives in Pakistan after the Indian strikes, rather than sympathising with the victims of terrorism," said Tharoor.
"We will say to our friends in Colombia, there can be no equivalence between those who dispatch terrorists and those who resist them. There can be no equivalence between those who attack and those who defend. We are only exercising our right of self-defence, and if there is any misunderstanding here, on this core, we are here to dispel any such misunderstanding", he added.
Tharoor is heading the multi-party delegation on a tour across the Americas as part of India's global outreach to emphasize its zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism. Following visits to Panama and Guyana, the delegation arrived in Colombia on Thursday. After wrapping up their engagements there, they are scheduled to continue to Brazil and the United States on Saturday.

From appeasement to report card politics: BJP hails ‘new normal' under Modi govt

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday described the eleven years of the Modi government as transformational and the one that redefined and reshaped Indian politics. Addressing a press conference at the party HQs, BJP President J.P. Nadda said that in the past 11 years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has changed the culture of Indian politics, and it should be etched in the history books in golden letters. He said the Modi government has brought defining change in the country's politics and marked a decisive shift from -- politics of appeasement to the politics of report cards. 'This has become the new normal,' Nadda said. '11 years ago, appeasement and division of society on caste and religion were the political culture. But after 2014, a responsible government took charge under PM Modi, which started the politics of the report card,' he added. 'A remarkable transformation has taken place in the past eleven years. In the past, politics was often driven by appeasement politics, but that has now shifted to politics of performance, accountability, and responsible governance. This has now become the new normal,' he said. Nadda credited the Prime Minister for ushering in bold reforms across sectors and also for launching path-breaking initiatives like revoking Article 370 and Triple Talaq. 'Our government took bold and historic decisions in the national interest. We abrogated Article 370 and abolished Triple Talaq. We enacted a new Waqf Act and passed the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). We also ensured 33 per cent reservation for women in legislative bodies,' the BJP chief pointed out. He said that it is difficult to present a full account of 11 years of governance in a single press conference; however, he underscored that the gamut of visionary policies and bold reforms has laid the foundation of a developed and self-reliant India. He said that bold and transparent governance under PM Modi has laid the foundation for a futuristic administration, and this will pave the way for the realisation of the Viksit Bharat dream. The growing public sentiment of 'Modi hai tau mumkin hai' shows people's unflinching faith and confidence in PM Modi's leadership and reinforces the belief that even arduous tasks can be overcome under his stewardship, he opined. Nadda further underlined the government's unwavering commitment towards building Bharat of everyone's dreams and said that the mantra of 'Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas' remains its governing principle.

Mamata Banerjee's trusted aide, a lightning rod for controversies: Why Firhad Hakim is again receiving brickbats

He is one of Mamata Banerjee's trusted leaders, but Firhad Hakim often leaves his leader and party in a spot of bother with his comments. Affectionately known as 'Bobby da' in the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Hakim, who triggered a row a few months ago by saying that Muslism would one day 'become a bigger majority than what the current majority population is', hasstirred the pot again with his comments targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi over Operation Sindoor. The four-time MLA sparked outrage on Saturday after he questioned the success of Operation and claimed that Modi had halted military action against Pakistan as he feared a 'big nation' would label him 'kapurush (coward)'. The BJP was quick to latch on to the remarks, with the party's state chief, Sukanta Majundar, saying that Hakim's criticism stemmed from 'an inability to digest such an operation', especially due to the lack of such actions during the UPA era. Hakim's political rise has been meteoric. Born in a family that traces its ancestry to Gaya in Bihar, the 66-year-old began his political career in the late 1990s as a councillor in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and, in 2021, became the first Muslim to occupy the post of Kolkata Mayor since Independence. He first entered the Assembly in 2009 after winning the Alipore bypoll. He then successfully contested the 2011 Assembly polls from Kolkata Port, a seat he has retained since then. His influence in the port area is so extensive that he is considered to have the final word there. After the exit of Mukul Roy in 2017 and the arrest of former Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee in 2022 in connection with the alleged teacher recruitment scam, Hakim is said to have solidified his position as one of Banerjee's trusted lieutenants. Since the TMC first came to power in 2011, he has been a part of her Cabinet and held important portfolios such as Urban Development and Municipal Affairs. He also serves as the Chairman of the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA). Hakim is also known to organise one of Kolkata's most popular Durga Pujas, in his neighbourhood of Chetla, where Banerjee is a regular visitor. List of controversies Hakim's latest remarks are the latest in a long list of controversial comments that he has made in his two-decade political career, sometimes even leaving his own party red-faced. In 2016, Hakim, in an interview with Pakistani daily Dawn, referred to his constituency as 'mini-Pakistan'. However, he maintained that his comments were not accurately reported. The same year, Hakim's name popped up in the Narada sting operation after he was allegedly seen accepting bribes on video. The following year, the CBI questioned him in connection with the case and arrested him after the 2021 Assembly polls. The TMC leader received bail from the Calcutta High Court in the case in May 2021. In 2023, the CBI raided Hakim's house in connection with alleged irregularities in KMC recruitment, prompting him to accuse the BJP of 'using central agencies to harass him over his refusal to bow down before them'. Last November, Hakim was forced to apologise after he faced sharp criticism for his alleged derogatory remarks about the BJP's Haroa bypoll candidate Rekha Patra, an alleged sexual harassment victim from Sandeshkhali. The following month, he claimed that Muslims did not consider themselves a minority. 'We believe that with the blessings of the Almighty, one day we will become a bigger majority than what the current majority population is,' he said, reportedly even leaving Banerjee upset. The comment led to the TMC distancing itself from Hakim and saying that his remarks 'do not reflect the party's position or ideology'. Seen by many as an 'one-man army' in the port area, which comprises areas such as Khiderpore and Metiabruz, Hakim's propensity to get into controversies has failed to diminish his stature within the TMC as its powerful minority face and key strategist.
