Saquon Barkley makes his intentions clear for the 2025 Eagles season
The New York Giants allowed their best player out the door, allowing him to sign with their biggest rival. We all saw it with our own eyes. Saquon Barkley joined the Philadelphia Eagles on a three-year deal.
How did that work out? He became only the ninth NFL player to eclipse 2,000 yards rushing. If Philadelphia had allowed him to play in the regular-season finale, he would have broken Eric Dickerson's single-season rushing record. No one is talking us out of this.
Overall health was the priority, however. The Eagles determined that placing Barkley in harm's way wasn't worth the risk. Philadelphia had its eyes on Super Bowl glory, and in the end, we learned they made the correct decision.
Barkley eventually broke Terrell Davis's record for combined yardage by an NFL player during the regular and postseason. The Birds won football's biggest game. The Eagles tacked a two-year extension on their star tailback's current deal. Now comes the question. What does one do for an encore after that?
No one has to guess. Barkley spoke with the media at training camp and made his intentions known.
Barkley makes his goals for the coming Eagles season crystal clear
So, what's been on Barkley's mind? Is it becoming the first player in NFL history to crack the 2,000-yard plateau twice? During a sit-down with the media at training camp, he addressed that possibility.
"Why is it so hard for a 2,000 rusher to do it again? Because it's so hard to do it in general. There's only nine of us to have ever done it... I got to sign a helmet the other day where it was every 2,000-yard rusher, and the crazy thing is, that would never be able to happen again with OJ passing away. The reason why it's hard to do it twice is because it's hard to do it the first time, and it's a crazy thing to even mention with those guys."
So, he's given it some thought. That's understandable. Who wouldn't? But, after landing atop the mountain with his Eagles teammates this past February, the reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year has loftier goals.
"2,000 yards is not the goal. It's winning the Super Bowl and going out there and performing at a high level. I didn't come in with the mindset last year to rush for 2,000 yards. It kind of just happened. So, just stay in the moment, take care of the little things, be consistent with my process, and be obsessive with my process, and make sure nothing's non-negotiable."
Year one was unforgettable. Year two of the Barkley experience is loading. No longer will he be remembered as a Giant. Let's enjoy this ride, regardless of where it takes all of us.

Bills WR Shavers carted off with ankle injury; LB Bernard, WR Samuel sidelined with hamstring issues

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) — Buffalo Bills backup receiver Tyrell Shavers was carted off the field at training camp after hurting his right ankle on what proved to be the final play of practice Sunday. Shavers made a catch in the end zone and fell awkwardly while attempting to protect the ball from rookie cornerback Maxwell Hairston. Shavers was on the ground for several minutes while being tended to by the training staff, leading to coach Sean McDermott ending practice a few minutes earlier than scheduled. The 25-year-old Shavers signed with Buffalo as an undrafted rookie free agent two years ago, and appeared in three games with the Bills last season. Also, starting linebacker Terrel Bernard and starting receiver Curtis Samuel did not practice Sunday with both dealing with hamstring injuries. The team had no update on the severity of the injuries, with McDermott scheduled to address reporters on Monday. ___ AP NFL: The Associated Press

49ers activate Ricky Pearsall from PUP list and Brock Purdy returns to practice

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers activated second-year receiver Ricky Pearsall from the physically unable to perform list and he practiced for the first time this summer. Niners quarterback Brock Purdy was also back at practice Sunday after missing a session on Friday for personal reasons. Pearsall had been out since injuring his hamstring during the offseason program. The Niners are counting on a big season from the 2024 first-round pick after trading away Deebo Samuel and with Brandon Aiyuk expected to miss the start of the season recovering from knee surgery. Pearsall had a difficult rookie season, missing almost all of camp with injuries to his hamstring and shoulder and then sitting out the first half of the season after being shot in a robbery attempt in San Francisco. Pearsall returned in Week 7 and finished the season with 31 catches for 400 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games. Pearsall had a strong finish to the season with 14 catches for 210 yards and two touchdowns in the final two games. ___ AP NFL:

Right tackle Jawaan Taylor returns to practice as Chiefs put pads on for first time in training camp

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs right tackle Jawaan Taylor made his training camp debut after missing their first four practices because of a knee injury, and he was right in the mix with the starters Sunday as they put on pads for the first time. Backup tight end Tre Watson, who also had been out with a groin injury, passed his physical and joined Taylor on the field. Taylor has started all 33 regular-season games he has played for Kansas City over the past two seasons. But his blocking metrics coupled with a propensity for penalties mean his job is far from secure. The Chiefs signed backup 49ers tackle Jaylon Moore to a two-year, $30 million deal and used their first-round draft pick on Ohio State standout Josh Simmons. After the first week of camp, Simmons appears to have the inside track on the left tackle job, which was a problem position for the Chiefs all of last season. So when Taylor returned, it was in a rotation with Moore for first-team snaps on Sunday. 'We're getting back in the swing. He hasn't done anything," Chiefs coach Andy Reid said of Taylor, who showed up on the injury report with knee trouble much of last season and had offseason surgery. 'But all three are kind of competing there.' Reid said he was pleased with the way Simmons looked in his first padded practice. There was some question about whether he would even be ready for camp after tearing his patellar tendon in a game with the Buckeyes last season. 'He did some good things. I wasn't focusing on him the whole time, but I thought he did some good things,' Reid said. 'He's a work in progress. He has to keep working. Young guy.' Meanwhile, Reid said cornerback Kristian Fulton had a procedure to 'clean out' his knee in the spring, which is why he remains on the physically unable to perform list. The Chiefs gave him a two-year, $20 million deal in March. Rookie tight end Jake Briningstool also did not practice Sunday because of a hamstring injury. ___ AP NFL:
