Bengal cops probe conspiracy angle behind clash in South 24 Parganas

KOLKATA: The West Bengal police said on Thursday that it was investigating whether an illegal construction, which triggered a clash between two groups on June 11 afternoon, was part of a conspiracy to fuel communal tension in South 24 Parganas district.
'A clash between two groups occurred yesterday afternoon in Rabindra Nagar police station area and adjacent areas of Nadial over illegal construction and plantation on govt land without any permission whatsoever and replacing an existing shop in the process, resulting in brick-batting at police and isolated vandalism in the vicinity. Whether the illegal construction was planned and designed as a conspiracy to fuel communal tension is also being probed in all seriousness,' the West Bengal police said in a post on X.
The trouble erupted on Wednesday afternoon after an attempt to plant Tulsi saplings in front of a temple on a pavement where a Muslim fruit seller used to run his shop.
About 10 police personnel were injured when they tried to stop the two groups. Several shops were ransacked by the mob on Wednesday.
Rahul Goswami, superintendent of police (SP) Diamond Harbour police district, told a news conference on Thursday that at least 40 people involved in the attacks had been arrested till Thursday afternoon. 'Raids will continue. On Wednesday evening we also arrested a Rabindra Nagar resident named Nabin Chandra Roy and four others when they were carrying bomb making materials on three motorcycles,' Goswami said.
The police officer said Roy had claimed to be a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party and said that the bomb making materials were procured for self-defence. 'We are investigating the role of Roy and his associates. Similarly, the role of Muslims involved in the violence is also under scanner,' Goswami said.
'Since the controversial site is very close to the Rabindra Nagar police station, the role of local policemen will be reviewed as well,' Goswami added.
The RSS countered the claim, saying Roy was never its member.
'We never had any member called Nabin Chandra Roy. Should the police go by his claims or probe his antecedents instead? Six political murders took place in the Diamond Harbour police district after the 2021 assembly polls. Did the police hold a press conference like this after those incidents?' Jishnu Basu, the RSS general secretary in south Bengal region, told HT.
In its post on X, the West Bengal police said the situation was now peaceful and under control. 'Prohibitory orders under 163 BNSS have been imposed in Rabindra Nagar PS area in the interest of peace. Representatives of all political parties or groups are advised not to visit the area till 163 BNSS is in place,' the state police said.
BJP's Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the opposition in the state assembly, has demanded that the case be handed over to the federal National Investigation Agency (NIA) and central police forces be deployed in the area.
'The @WBPolice's statement is a shameful attempt to whitewash a blatant communal attack on Hindus by Jihadists, reducing it to a mere 'clash between two groups'....' Adhikari wrote on X.
BJP legislators protested inside the state assembly and staged a walk-out after assembly speaker Biman Banerjee refused to admit two adjournment motions moved over the Rabindra Nagar violence.
Some BJP legislators met governor CV Ananda Bose as well. 'The governor assured the delegation that their concerns will be duly noted and taken forward with appropriate authorities for immediate necessary action and report,' the Raj Bhavan said in a statement.
BJP state president Sukanta Majundar tried to visit Maheshtala but was stopped by the police. He was later detained by police for trying to stage a demonstration near the residence of chief minister Mamata Banerjee.
The ruling Trinamool Congress alleged that the incident was part of a larger conspiracy by BJP to incite violence across Bengal
'When an active BJP and RSS worker has been arrested with explosive materials, BJP leaders such as Suvendu Adhikari, Sukanta Majumdar and Amit Malviya are making provocative statements to incite unrest,' TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said.

Former councillor Parvinder Lapran goes back to BJP

Ludhiana: Former councillor Parvinder Lapran rejoined the Bharatiya Janata Party in the presence of its national general secretary Tarun Chugh at the party's election office on Ferozepur Road. Lapran was expelled from the party during the MC elections last year. After his wife was denied a councillor ticket from ward 51, he decided to contest as an independent candidate, which led to his expulsion with a few other local leaders. He was formally inducted back into the party at the BJP office by Tarun Chugh, in the presence of state BJP cashier Gurdev Sharma Debi, district president Rajnesh Dhiman, and BJP leader, advocate Bikram Sidhu. Addressing the gathering, Chugh said, "The party needs hard-working workers to strengthen its base among voters. The BJP is like a big family and we welcome new members into this family." Chugh also expressed confidence about an impending election victory for the BJP. Meanwhile, Lapran thanked party leaders for giving him a chance. He said that he was inspired by the policies of PM Narendra Modi and felt that a double engine government was needed in Punjab. He said that Punjab, as well as Ludhiana, lagged in terms of development and only the BJP could save it. Initially, Lapran was in the Congress, but he decided to leave the party when Simarjit Singh Bains joined it. He was a councillor during the Congress tenure. Keeladi findings don't serve the script of ‘BJP-RSS ecosystem', says Chief Minister M.K. Stalin

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Friday charged that the 'BJP-RSS ecosystem' recoiled from the archaeological findings from Keeladi in Tamil Nadu not because evidence was lacking, but 'because the truth does not serve their script.' Mr. Stalin's comments were made a few days after Union Minister for Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat contended that the findings from Keeladi were not technically well-supported. In a social media post, Mr. Stalin cited a newspaper report on archaeological findings from Keeladi site, which reiterated the findings published by the State Archaeology Department in its 2019 report 'Keeladi-An Urban Settlement of Sangam Age on the Banks of River Vaigai' on the site's 6th Century connection based on carbon dating. 'Ample proof' Mr. Stalin said: 'Even when confronted with carbon-dated artefacts and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) reports from international laboratories on the Keeladi excavations, they continue to demand 'more proof'. And here is the 'Proof'.' 'Despite strong opposition from respected historians and archaeologists, the BJP continues to promote the mythical Sarasvati Civilisation. They do so without credible evidence, while dismissing the rigorously proven antiquity of Tamil culture,' Mr. Stalin contended. He added: 'We fought for centuries to unearth our history. They fight every day to erase it. The world is watching. So is time.' Minister Thangam Thennarasu (holding the archaeology portfolio) in a social media post, too cited the newspaper report about the findings from the Keeladi site, which said that the radiocarbon dating traced the site's origin to 580 BCE (as published in the 2019 report). 'For those who point to insufficient evidence, it has been the history of the Tamils to prove them scientifically with evidence.' He recalled that the DMK government, which had been demonstrating the antiquity of the Tamil land using archaeological evidence backed by science, had increased the allocation to archaeology from ₹5 crore to ₹7 crore. Recently, the Archaeological Survey of India, under the Union Ministry of Culture, directed its archaeologist Amarnath Ramakrishna, who unearthed an ancient civilization in Keeladi, to resubmit his report about the excavation after making necessary corrections for taking further action. However, Mr. Ramakrishna stood by his report.

Waqf Amendment Act was passed without political ethics or moral fear, says VCK chief

VCK founder Thol. Thirumavalavan on Friday said the Waqf Amendment Act was passed in Parliament without 'political ethics or moral fear' by the BJP despite severe pushback from the Opposition ranks at every forum. Addressing a meeting organised by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board demanding the repeal of the amended legislation, Mr. Thirumavalavan alleged that the BJP had used the power of the government to target the Islamic community in the name of law and democracy over the last 11 years. 'Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), abrogation of Article 370, Triple Talaq, and Waqf Amendment Act targets Muslims. BJP doesn't meddle with administration of religious properties of other faiths but meddles with ones owned by the Muslim community. It uses the law to do what should be illegal. It goes against democracy by using the very democracy. On the surface of it, these actions are about targeting and harassing Muslims. But, if you look closely, it is about dismantling of the Constitution,' he said. The VCK opposed the law in Parliament and in the Joint Committee, besides organising protests. 'Now, we are organising a protest to safeguard secularism in Tiruchi. It has become necessary to sharpen our politics. There is no disagreement that all this is a result of hate politics against Muslims, but their eventual target is to dismantle the Constitution because it protects secularism,' he said. DMK senior leader A. Raja said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah contended in Parliament that the Muslims were misappropriating Waqf properties and government-owned properties were being claimed as Waqf properties as reasons for passing the Act. 'All amendments brought in earlier had a basis. Whenever there was a law related to Muslims in Parliament, there would be widespread discussions and consultations and only then would the law be introduced,. I would like to ask Amit Shah and Prime Minister is the basis for the Waqf law that has been passed? Can you show that?' he said. Manithaneya Makkal Katchi president M.H. Jawahirullah said, 'Muslims have not understood the importance of protecting the Waqf properties. When the CAA was introduced, there were protests across India. Specifically, women began protesting in Shaheen Bhags. The Muslim community should have undertaken even more vibrant protests in the Waqf issue.'
