KSRTC Issues Appointment Orders, Disburses Compensation, and Launches New Buses
KSRTC, which had suspended recruitment under compassionate grounds for nearly a decade, has now resumed the process. Within the past year, the corporation has filled 271 posts, including 152 KST Constables, 60 Office Helpers (Cleaning), 37 Technical Assistants, and 22 Driver-cum-Conductors. Today, appointment orders were distributed to 45 new KST Constables. Speaking on the occasion, Minister Ramalinga Reddy emphasized the vital contribution of the workforce, stating that the corporation is thriving due to the dedicated efforts of its employees. He reiterated KSRTC's responsibility to support the families of deceased staff and mentioned that across the four transport corporations, a total of 1,000 compassionate appointments have been made so far.
A cheque of ₹1 crore was handed over to the family of an employee who died in an accident, under the "Saarige Suraksha" Accident Insurance Scheme. This initiative provides ₹1 crore compensation to the families of employees who die in accidents, irrespective of whether the incident occurred on duty or off-duty. So far, ₹27 crore has been disbursed under this scheme to the dependents of 27 employees.
In light of rising employee deaths due to health conditions like heart attacks, cancer, and strokes, KSRTC had earlier increased the compensation under the Employee Family Welfare Relief Scheme from ₹3 lakh to ₹10 lakh effective November 1, 2023. Today, ₹2.60 crore in compensation was distributed to the families of 26 such employees. In total, the scheme has covered 151 cases, with ₹15.10 crore disbursed till date.
Minister Ramalinga Reddy expressed condolences to the families of employees who passed away due to accidents or health reasons. He stressed the irreplaceable value of human life and underlined that while the deceased cannot be brought back, the corporation has a duty to ensure their families' financial security. He urged the beneficiaries to use the compensation for essential needs such as education, housing, and family well-being, cautioning them not to fall prey to financial traps or individuals promising high returns.
The event also marked the formal introduction of five new Volvo Airavat Club Class 2.0 buses into the KSRTC fleet. These buses will operate on the Bengaluru–Tirupati (1 bus), Mangaluru–Bengaluru (2 buses), and Mysuru–Mantralaya (2 buses) routes. The new Airavat Club Class 2.0 buses offer a range of enhanced features including 15-meter length, 51 premium 2x2 seating, advanced fuel efficiency, increased luggage space, upgraded lighting and safety systems, and modern comfort amenities such as USB and C-type charging ports and a fire alarm protection system with automated water spray nozzles.
Managing Director of KSRTC, Akram Pasha, addressed the gathering and reminded the beneficiaries to follow the minister's advice regarding the proper and responsible use of the compensation funds. He assured that KSRTC stands firmly by the families of its employees in both support and solidarity.

Karnataka bus strike leaves passengers stranded, struggling with high fares
BENGALURU: It was surprising for Syed that there were private buses at Terminal 2 of KSRTC. "I was looking for a bus to Hassan to deliver a parcel. None in sight." Syed was not the only one to find the red and white buses of KSRTC being replaced by colored buses of private operators at the inter-city terminals in Majestic on Tuesday. Women with financial constraints who often availed themselves of the Shakti scheme also found themselves stuck in the unaffordable city. "We might go back to the govt hospital where we came to visit a relative of ours," said two women who work as labourers and are from Davangere. It is also the time for coffee plantation labour to arrive at farms in the Ghats, with families doing their annual travel to Sakalespur. A family from Assam said ,"We just reached from Assam by train and were hoping to take the govt bus. But here, private seater bus is charging Rs 2400 for five adults," said Mansura and her family. "We are not sure what exactly the work there would be there. Now we are unsure how to get there." One of them was a passenger from Mangaluru who came to the city as a get-away -- "But it turned expensive. I have waited for three hours and I'm done. I'm taking the pvt bus although it's Rs 900 a ticket despite being non-AC!" A private bus operator said they were uncertain if they would get passengers back during the weekday, which also becomes a tricky situation for unviable routes. "Fewer operate to North Karnataka because of bad roads, the distance being extremely long," he added. The KSRTC depot saw more police personnel stationed for crowd control. "The crowd is expected to surge by late evening, and hence more of us are here," said the police personnel. Ramesh M: I was heading to Raichur with my wife for the Varamahalaxmi festival. Sarige would have cost her zero rupees and me Rs 600. But pvt buses charge Rs 800 a person. We are going back Banashankari. The to and fro auto charge has been Rs 600. Laxman Khayam: Three of us came from Jharkhand for a holiday. At Majestic, an auto shanghaied us into taking a ride to another bus stop 9kms away, and when there were no buses, we got back here, costing us Rs 2400. We have to go to Chitradurga. Durgamma: We came from Jagalur in Davanagere to the govt Kidwai hospital here to meet our relative. We usually take the free bus Sarige. We did not know about the strike. Now pvt buses demand Rs 500 a person. We do not know what to do, where to stay—some say we need to wait till later in the evening for KSRTC, but pvt buses say the strike will continue till tomorrow, asking us -- 'How long are you expecting to wait?' Vishnupriya: My sister and I travelled from Bellary last night by KSRTC Sarige bus for a job interview today. We did not know about the strike. We have been waiting for 15 minutes for a KSRTC to go back or will have to take the pvt bus, which costs Rs 700 a person. Nandan Aradhaya: The pvt bus charges Rs 50 usually, but today when getting here, it increased to Rs 100 a person. About 20 of us take the bus daily from Vijayapura in Devanahalli to Bengaluru for college. Each day is a struggle to go back -- buses come to KSRTC and wait for two hours at least. We reach home late at night. Our route is Majestic to Shidlaghatta, but at the same time, four buses head to Chikkaballapur -- It's a regular struggle for us. To add to it, today, we have waited for two hours for the KSRTC bus to leave.

SWR operates special trains as indefinite RTC strike begins in Karnataka
The South Western Railway (SWR), Bengaluru division, announced the operation of special trains on select routes to ease public inconvenience following the indefinite strike by employees of four State-run transport corporations of Karnataka starting August 5. Additional special train services have been arranged between 1) Tumakuru(TK)- KSR Bengaluru (SBC) 2) KSR Bengaluru - Mysuru (MYS) 3) Bengaluru Cantonment (BNC) - Bangarapet (BWT) 4) KSR Bengaluru - Satya Sai Prashanti Nilayam (SSPN) on 05.08.2025: # — DRM Bengaluru (@drmsbc) August 4, 2025 Senior SWR officials told The Hindu that additional train services have been arranged between key destinations on August 5 to help commuters affected by the absence of regular bus services. The special train services announced by the SWR on August 5 include routes between Tumakuru (TK) and KSR Bengaluru (SBC), KSR Bengaluru and Mysuru (MYS), Bengaluru Cantonment (BNC) and Bangarapet (BWT), and KSR Bengaluru and Satya Sai Prashanti Nilayam (SSPN). 'These special trains have been arranged to support daily commuters in light of the RTC strike. Efforts were being made to minimise disruption to public transport,' an SWR official said. The Joint Action Committee (JAC), representing employees of KSRTC, BMTC, NWKRTC, and KKRTC, went ahead with the strike despite the Karnataka High Court's direction to defer it for at least a day. The unions cited the failure of talks with the State Government over demands, such as a pay hike and settlement of arrears. A final round of negotiations with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy on August 4 failed to yield any breakthrough. Meanwhile, the Transport Department has brought in private bus operators to maintain bus services in Karnataka. The Federation of Karnataka State Private Transport Associations has agreed to operate additional buses. School and industrial buses are also being deployed in some districts to fill service gaps.
