Kangar couple charged with abusing 10-year-old daughter, plead not guilty
KANGAR, June 24 (Bernama) -- A married couple pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to a charge of abusing their daughter, which resulted in the child sustaining physical injuries last week.
The male accused, a mechanic, and his wife, a homemaker, both aged 37, claimed trial after the charge was read to them before Judge Sharifah Norazlita Syed Salim Idid.
According to the charge, the couple, as individuals having custody of the child, allegedly committed the offence against the girl, aged 10 years and eight months, at a house in Taman Desa Saujana, Arau, at around 12.15 pm on June 18.
They were charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, and punishable under Section 31(1) of the same Act, which provides for a jail term of up to 20 years, a fine of up to RM50,000, or both, upon conviction.
The court allowed both accused to be released on bail of RM20,000 each with one Malaysian surety and imposed additional conditions: they must report to the nearest police station on the 1st of every month and are prohibited from approaching or disturbing the victim until the case is concluded.
The court fixed July 17 for mention for the submission of related documents.
Deputy public prosecutor Nabilah Ahmad Poad prosecuted the case, while the couple was represented by lawyer S. Devendran. — Bernama

Mum, stepdad remanded for alleged abuse of boy
KANGAR: A couple has been remanded until June 27 to assist police in their investigation into the alleged abuse of a 6-year-old boy at their home in Simpang Empat here. The suspects, aged 27 and 37, are the child's biological mother and stepfather. They were arrested after the boy's grandfather lodged a police report. Kangar police chief Assistant Commissioner Yusharifuddin Mohd Yusop said the incident was reported last Friday when the boy told his grandfather that he had been assaulted by both his mother and stepfather while staying at their house in Simpang Empat. "The child claimed he was pinched on the right thigh, slapped on the head, struck on the left chest with a stone, poked with a needle on his left arm and choked by both suspects. "The ordeal left him fearful and unwilling to return to his mother's house," he said in a statement today (June 24). Yusharifuddin said the boy had been taken to his grandfather's house, who then brought him to Tuanku Fauziah Hospital (HTF) in Kangar for a medical check-up before lodging the report. "A physical examination found no bruises or swelling except for a puncture wound consistent with a needle prick on the left arm. "The boy has been admitted for observation and is now under the care of his grandparents," he added. Police detained the suspects at 11pm yesterday in Simpang Empat. The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which provides for a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment for up to 20 years, or both, upon conviction.

3 immigration officers acquitted of smuggling migrants at KLIA
Judicial commissioner Wendy Ooi ruled that the defence had successfully raised doubt in the prosecution's case. SHAH ALAM : The High Court today acquitted three immigration officers, including a woman, of charges related to the smuggling of nine Bangladeshi migrants at KLIA eight years ago. Judicial commissioner Wendy Ooi said following an independent and comprehensive evaluation of all the evidence presented during the trial that the defence had successfully raised doubt in the prosecution's case. Maizatul Azwa Nasib, 32, Hairulnizam Hasim, 43, and Zamir Hazwan Hamid, 42, were accused of smuggling the migrants through KLIA between 3pm and 10pm on July 17, 2017, and again between 10pm on July 18, 2017 and 8am the following day. They were charged under Section 26A of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007. Each of the accused had been out on a bail of RM10,000 pending the outcome of today's proceedings. Lawyer Harpal Singh represented Maizatul and Hairulnizam while Rajpal Singh appeared for Zamir. Deputy public prosecutor Nur Suriati Mohamad led the prosecution. In 2021, then High Court judge Yazid Mustafa acquitted the trio without calling for their defence, prompting the prosecution to file an appeal. In a ruling last year, the Court of Appeal ordered the trio to enter their defence.

Driver who repeatedly reversed Hilux into Axia arrested
The suspect rammed his four-wheel drive into the Axia three times after a heated exchange with the victim. PETALING JAYA : Police have arrested a man who repeatedly reversed his Toyota Hilux into a Perodua Axia in a road rage incident in Johor Bahru on Sunday. Johor Bahru Selatan police chief Raub Selamat said the incident was sparked when the 63-year-old victim driving the Axia slowed down after missing a turn, Berita Harian reported. The suspect then overtook the victim before stopping his vehicle in front of the Axia and engaging in a heated argument with the driver. 'The suspect then rammed his four-wheel drive into the Axia three times, damaging the victim's vehicle,' Raub said, adding that the suspect had a record of seven criminal offences and tested negative for drugs. Raub said the case is being probed for mischief and causing damage, as well as reckless driving.
