Bengal: Many private schools declare early summer vacations from May 9 after Mamata's plea

The Hindu09-05-2025
Several private schools in West Bengal have declared summer vacations from Friday, after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urged the educational institutions to advance the holidays by a week in the wake of the India-Pakistan tensions.
St. Xavier's Institution-Sodpure, Julien Day School, and Delhi Public School, Ruby Park were among the schools that announced summer vacations from the Friday following Banerjee's appeal. "We were scheduled to hold classes till May 13, but, because of the emerging situation and as suggested by the CM, we advanced the dates by a few days," said Lipika Ghosh, Principal of St Xavier's Institution, Sodpure.
A spokesperson of Julien Day School said, "We have advanced the summer vacation dates from the initial plan of May 16 to May 9 following the directive of the CM." Delhi Public School Ruby Park, too, has announced holidays for a month from Friday.
Secretary of La Martiniere School for Boys and Girls, Supriyo Dhar, added, "After the CM's request, we have decided to switch to online classes from today till May 16. We had earlier announced to start the vacations from May 17, and that remains.'
However, several schools maintained that they had already chalked out their academic calendar before the Pahalgam terror attack and the military conflict between India and Pakistan. 'Yes, we are closing from tomorrow (May 10) after the 'Rabindra Jayanti' (birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, a state holiday) celebrations today. But, this was decided much earlier," Principal of Lakshmipat Singhania Academy, Meena Kak, said.
Principal of B.D. Memorial International School-Narendrapur, Madhumita Sengupta, also said that it had already fixed May 8, as the last day of classes before the summer vacations. 'Our academic calendar had been set" before the developments surrounding the Pahalgam incident, she said.
The Mahadevi Birla World Academy and Calcutta Girls High School also said dates for the summer vacations had been fixed well in advance. In the districts as well, several private schools announced the commencement of summer vacations from Friday. "Following the developments after 'Operation Sindoor', we have decided to advance the day of commencement of vacations from May 16 to May 9," a spokesperson of a private school in Jalpaiguri said. Summer vacations are already underway in state-run and state-aided schools from April 30, owing to excess heat.

Mamata Banerjee's 'eviction' lies busted by her party MP, says BJP

Kolkata: The BJP on Wednesday said that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's claims on purported eviction of Bengali-speaking migrant workers from a colony in New Delhi have been busted by her party's MP in Parliament. The BJP's information technology cell chief and the party's central observer for West Bengal, Amit Malviya, said that in the Lok Sabha, June Maliah, the actress-turned-politician and MP from the Medinipur constituency, had asked a question about the 'evictions' of Bengali-speaking migrant workers in Jai Hind Colony, Vasant Kunj, in the House. The truth, as revealed in the government reply, is that no eviction drive took place, there was no water supply cut and not a single complaint was filed with the Delhi Jal Board, except for one social media post, Malviya said in a social media statement on X on Wednesday morning. Malviya claimed that only two electricity connections were disconnected, and that too on the orders of a civil court. 'Once again, the false propaganda of the TMC has been exposed in Parliament, through their question! Bengalis are not being targeted, as falsely alleged by Mamata Banerjee to hide her misgovernance. Facts speak louder than their lies," Malviya claimed. He also posted the question and the reply on his X handle, which is dated July 31. To recall, a political war of words on social media platform X between BJP's Amit Malviya and Mamata Banerjee surfaced last month, over the reported eviction and harassment of Bengali-speaking migrant workers at Delhi's Jai Hind Colony. On July 10, Malviya issued a social media statement where he claimed that false propaganda was being spread that politics played a role behind the action at Jai Hind Colony. He claimed that not politics but a court order prompted the action. "The action being taken is based on a court order -- not politics. The settlement in question is illegal, and the law is simply being enforced. It is no coincidence that just days ago, 26 illegal Bangladeshis were apprehended from this very area," Malviya said in the statement. A couple of hours after his statement on X was posted, CM Banerjee issued a strongly worded statement and post on her official X account claiming that she was deeply disturbed over the information of harassment emerging from Jai Hind Colony in New Delhi's Vasant Kunj -- a settlement predominantly inhabited by Bengalis. "Their water supply was reportedly cut on orders from the BJP-led government. Electricity meters were confiscated, and power was abruptly cut the day before yesterday. Residents also claim that the Delhi Police, backed by Rapid Action Force personnel, blocked private water tankers they had arranged and paid for. A forced eviction is currently underway despite the matter being sub-judice following another transgression last December by the Delhi Police. How can we claim to be a democratic Republic if the basic rights to shelter, water, and electricity are being trampled upon?" the Chief Minister's statement said.

Row erupts as KBC hosts officers Sofiya Qureshi, Vyomika Singh after Operation Sindoor

Amitabh Bachchan will host decorated officers from the Indian Armed Forces in the Independence Day special episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) season 17. In a promo shared by the channel, Amitabh Bachchan is seen welcoming Colonel Sofiya Qureshi (Indian Army), Wing Commander Vyomika Singh (Indian Air Force) and Commander Prerna Deosthalee (Indian Navy). Sofiya Qureshi, Vyomika Singh share Operation Sindoor story on KBC(YouTube/@KBCIndia) The special episode will feature the officers recounting key moments from India's Operation Sindoor conducted against terror camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. The appearance of the three officers, however, has sparked a controversy, with many netizens calling it a "PR" stunt and 'political mileage'. Both Colonel Sofiya and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh held press briefings while the mission was ongoing. The makers recently released a teaser of the episode, set to air on August 15, showing KBC host Amitabh Bachchan giving the officers a grand welcome. 'This is just unbelievable. Operation Sindoor heroes appearing on national TV show KBC Just because one 'nationalist' party wants to milk some votes?' one user posted on X. "Have you ever seen anything like this after a military operation in any serious country? How is this even allowed for someone in service? The current regime is shamelessly using our forces for its petty politics and hyper-nationalism," another user said. 'Our Army was sacrosanct, above politics, beyond PR. Today, Modi govt parades serving soldiers on shows like KBC for image building. Even our Army has been made a political tool for Modi's PR. Our forces are to defend the nation, not a politician's brand,' a user posted on X. A user also questioned if armed forces protocol allows sending officers on reality shows like KBC. "The Indian Armed Forces have some protocol, some dignity and huge respect. Politicians are ruining it for their personal benefit. That's shameful," he said. What the regulations say: Uniform use in social and cultural settings: Uniforms are generally discouraged in social venues such as restaurants, hotels, or while shopping — except when attending official social functions such as those held in the Officers' Mess. Headgear (caps) must not be worn inside such venues, including at social gatherings (explicitly listed alongside church services and formal meetings). Uniforms may be worn at social events within the Officers' Mess, including dances or gatherings organised by the military.

KBC hosts officers Sofiya Qureshi, Vyomika Singh for Independence Day show, stirs row

The appearance of Colonel Sofiya Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, who became the faces of Operation Sindoor, along with Commander Prerna Deosthalee of the Indian Navy on the Independence Day special episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) has ignited controversy. While many praised the selection of participants for the show, controversy erupted after Kaun Banega Crorepati released a promo of the episode on its social media platforms. Critics took to social media to accuse the government of using the armed forces for political purposes. The episode hosted by actor Amitabh Bachchan will be aired on August 15. In the teaser, Colonel Sofiya Qureshi is heard saying, 'Pakistan ye karta chala aa raha hai. Toh jawab dena banta tha sir. Isiliye Operation Sindoor ko plan kiya gaya'. (Pakistan has been doing this. So it was necessary to respond, sir. That is why Operation Sindoor was planned.) The episode is expected to feature discussions on Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of 26 civilians in Jammu and Kashmir. However, the decision to feature the officers on a reality show has drawn criticism online, with netizens questioning how such an appearance was approved so soon after a high-stakes military operation. All for propagating info on Op Sindoor but KBC is not the platform! Dont trivialize a major strategic victory this way! A well made 2hr documentary would be better if thats the objective #KaunBanegaCrorepati#OperationSindoor — Curious jeevi (@curiousjeevi) August 13, 2025 Have you ever seen anything like this after a military operation in any serious country?
