Rabindra Jayanti: Indian Consulate in Shanghai honours victims of Pahalgam terror attacks
Shanghai [China], June 1 (ANI): The Consulate General of India in Shanghai, Pratik Mathur on Sunday observed Rabindra Jayanti with a solemn pledge ceremony to honour the victims of the Pahalgam terror attacks. The ceremony reaffirmed India's commitment to fighting terrorism with a zero-tolerance approach. In a post on X, the Consulate said, 'On Rabindra Jayanti, a solemn pledge ceremony was held at Consulate General of India today to remember and pay homage to the victims of the Pahalgam terror attacks. CG Pratik Mathur reaffirmed our firm national resolve to fight terror with a zero tolerance approach as the nation has clearly manifested with Operation Sindoor. Jai Hind! Jai Bharat!' In the context of Operation Sindoor and India's continued fight against cross-border terrorism, seven all-party delegations are visiting key partner countries, including members of the UN Security Council. The all-party delegations will project India's national consensus and resolute approach to combating terrorism in all forms and manifestations. They are carrying forth to the world the country's strong message of zero-tolerance against terrorism. Members of Parliament from different parties, prominent political personalities, and distinguished diplomats are a part of each delegation. However, India has not sent any delegation to China. Meanwhile, on May 30, a Chinese Defence Ministry spokesperson, Zhang Xiaogang, refused to provide any details on the effectiveness of Pakistan's weapons during the recent military confrontation with India, sidestepping direct answers and instead urging both sides to remain calm, Global Times reported. This comes amid reports of India recovering an unexploded PL-15E missile, a Chinese-made beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile. Speaking at a regular Thursday press briefing, spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang emphasised China's hope that both sides will remain calm and restrained to avoid further complicating the situation. When asked for the ministry's comment on the performance of Chinese equipment in the recent India-Pakistan conflict, and on the remarks by Indian military officials that 'Pakistan received support from China's air defense and satellite systems, but the performance of these systems was below average,' Zhang said, 'We would like to stress that India and Pakistan are neighbors that cannot be moved. We hope both sides will remain calm and restrained to avoid further complicating the situation.' He said that China is willing to continue playing a constructive role in maintaining regional peace and stability. (ANI)

Picking up the weekend
After a tense, quiet weekend that saw a series of cancellations—from food tours to literary festivals, Delhi is beginning to stir back to life. With the ceasefire offering relief following the brutal Pahalgam attack and simmering tensions with Pakistan, the capital city is cautiously optimistic. From bookstores to performance venues, organisers are tentatively putting events back on the calendar—some postponed, others rescheduled. The return to normalcy, however, is being handled with care. 'Now that a ceasefire has been agreed upon, I hope things will fall into place quickly,' says Ashmita Lucktoo, marketing head of Rooh Restaurant. Anjaleka Kripalani, founder of Angie Homes, agrees that 'more than financial distress, it was the fear and uncertainty that caused more damage'. Many cultural spaces across the city share this optimism. The Rabindra Jayanti celebrations, originally scheduled conveniently on a weekend for May 9 — Tagore's birthday is on May 7 — have been rescheduled for Sunday, May 18, at the Kali Mandir Society premises in Chittaranjan Park, with an evening of music, poetry, and other artistic expressions. Likewise, the Red Bull Dance Your Style Delhi qualifiers — initially paused — are now confirmed for today, May 17, at Travancore Palace. Paritosh Parmar, founder of ToTheCulture, the distribution partner for the Red Bull event, explains that the qualifiers—set for last Saturday—were thrown into limbo due to rising cross-border tensions. 'There was disappointment. The event was called off just a day before, but people were supportive, just a little sad. But now everyone is looking forward to what's coming next this weekend — there's definitely still excitement in the air,' says Parmar.

West Bengal CPI(M) calls for de-escalation of India-Pakistan military conflict
The West Bengal leadership of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Friday (May 9, 2025) urged for the de-escalation of the ongoing military conflict between India and Pakistan, asserting that 'no one wins in such a war'. CPI(M) State Secretary Md. Salim said that attacks and counter-attacks become part of a cyclical process and no one wins such a war. The senior CPI(M) leader cited the example of the war between Russia and Ukraine and added that in today's world nobody occupies the territory of another country. Also read | Choice of de-escalation is with Pakistan: Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri 'War means destruction. The more there is war mongering, it has to be emphatically said that war is not a solution to any problem,' Mr. Salim said. The CPI(M) leader, however, added: 'Terrorism has to be confronted. Terrorists have to be identified, which India has done. Everyone has supported it. The whole world has supported it. But then this retaliation, escalation continues continuously'. The CPI(M) leadership had supported Operation Sindoor and in a statement added, 'In the all-party meeting convened by the Union Government, all the political parties had extended support to the measures taken by the Union Government aimed against the terrorists and their handlers'. Mr. Salim who made the comments at an event to observe the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore said, 'Rabindranath is always relevant, not only in times of peace but also in times in war. That is why he is called world poet'. The CPI(M) leader added that war should not be considered a video game. 'The war is between the soldiers, but in fact there are innocent villagers, ordinary people, whose lives are becoming miserable. The governments of both countries are not taking steps to make the lives of their people from miserable to bearable,' he added. Mr. Adhikari questioned the coverage of Operation Sindoor and the recent attacks and counter attacks between India and Pakistan by the publication, which has emphasised a diplomatic solution to the escalation at the border. Mr. Adhikari said that CPI(M) leaders have recently made fun of mock drills and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media. He threatened to conduct a surgical strike of CPI(M) leaders and 'throw them to Pakistan' once the Bharatiya Janata Party comes to power in West Bengal.
