West Bengal CPI(M) calls for de-escalation of India-Pakistan military conflict
The West Bengal leadership of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Friday (May 9, 2025) urged for the de-escalation of the ongoing military conflict between India and Pakistan, asserting that 'no one wins in such a war'.
CPI(M) State Secretary Md. Salim said that attacks and counter-attacks become part of a cyclical process and no one wins such a war. The senior CPI(M) leader cited the example of the war between Russia and Ukraine and added that in today's world nobody occupies the territory of another country.

'War means destruction. The more there is war mongering, it has to be emphatically said that war is not a solution to any problem,' Mr. Salim said.
The CPI(M) leader, however, added: 'Terrorism has to be confronted. Terrorists have to be identified, which India has done. Everyone has supported it. The whole world has supported it. But then this retaliation, escalation continues continuously'.
The CPI(M) leadership had supported Operation Sindoor and in a statement added, 'In the all-party meeting convened by the Union Government, all the political parties had extended support to the measures taken by the Union Government aimed against the terrorists and their handlers'.
Mr. Salim who made the comments at an event to observe the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore said, 'Rabindranath is always relevant, not only in times of peace but also in times in war. That is why he is called world poet'.
The CPI(M) leader added that war should not be considered a video game. 'The war is between the soldiers, but in fact there are innocent villagers, ordinary people, whose lives are becoming miserable. The governments of both countries are not taking steps to make the lives of their people from miserable to bearable,' he added.

Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, who participated in the Rabindra Jayanti celebrations in the West Bengal Assembly, targeted Ganashakti, the Bengali mouthpiece of CPI(M) published from West Bengal. Mr. Adhikari questioned the coverage of Operation Sindoor and the recent attacks and counter attacks between India and Pakistan by the publication, which has emphasised a diplomatic solution to the escalation at the border.
Mr. Adhikari said that CPI(M) leaders have recently made fun of mock drills and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media. He threatened to conduct a surgical strike of CPI(M) leaders and 'throw them to Pakistan' once the Bharatiya Janata Party comes to power in West Bengal.

Activists alleged Maoist killings staged; Chhattisgarh police dismiss claim
Raipur: Civil rights activists and the Telangana civil rights association on Saturday alleged that Chhattisgarh police had taken Maoist leaders into custody in Bijapur and were killing them one by one in staged encounters. Police, however, dismissed the allegations, stating that all actions were lawful and carried out in strict accordance with operational protocols. This comes after the security forces killed senior leader of the banned CPI (Maoist) and a Central Committee member (CCM) Sudhakar in an encounter in the forests of Bijapur, and top Maoist leader Bhaskar in the Indravati National Park area in Bijapur on Thursday — two weeks after they gunned CPI (Maoist) general secretary Nambala Keshav Rao alias Basavaraju was gunned down in Narayanpur. A statement issued by the Telangana civil rights association on Saturday said that senior Maoist leaders, including CPI (Maoist) Central Committee member Sudhakar and Telangana State Committee member Mailarapu Adelu alias Bhaskar, were in police custody before being killed in staged encounters on Thursday and Friday respectively in the Indravati National Park area. Calling the allegation 'baseless', inspector general (IG) of police of Bastar Range Sunderraj P said, 'In strict adherence to the constitutional mandate and legal framework of the Republic of India, the security forces remain committed to safeguarding the lives, rights and properties of the native population in the region. All operational activities are conducted in accordance with the provisions of law, ensuring due process, restraint, and accountability at every stage.' The association also claimed that several other senior Maoist leaders — including Bandi Prakash, Indravati National Park area secretary Dilip, Maddeedu area secretary Seetu, Ramanna, Munna, Sunitha, Mahesh, and around ten others — remain in police custody and are at risk of being killed similarly. US with India in fight against terrorism: Dy Secretary of State Landau
The US stands strong with India in the fight against terrorism, US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau told Congress MP Shashi Tharoor-led all-party delegation here to convey India's stance on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. The Indian delegation met Landau here on Friday as it wrapped up the crucial US leg of its multi-nation tour, briefing key interlocutors about Operation Sindoor targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives. The all-party parliamentary delegation led by Dr. @ShashiTharoor had a warm and candid conversation with US Deputy Secretary of State Landau. The Indian delegation briefed him on the atrocities of the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor, the Indian Embassy said on X. The embassy in a statement said that during the meeting with Landau, the delegation briefed him on the heinous terrorist attack in Pahalgam, discussed India's subsequent Operation Sindoor, and put forth India's firm resolve to counter cross-border terrorism in all its forms. The deputy secretary reaffirmed the United States' strong support for India in the fight against terrorism. The two sides also had a wide-ranging conversation on the importance of strengthening bilateral relationships through advancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest, it said. The delegation also had a productive meeting with Senator Chris Van Hollen, a member of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The delegation briefed him on the heinous terrorist attack in Pahalgam, discussed India's subsequent Operation Sindoor, and put forth India's firm resolve to counter cross-border terrorism in all its forms, the embassy said on X. The senator sympathised with the victims of repeated terror attacks in India, saying the US stood with India in the fight against terrorism, and expressed support for New Delhi's right to defend itself. Tharoor also spoke over the phone with Senator Cory Booker, a member of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and described the conversation as warm and productive. He briefed Booker on the monstrous terror attack in Pahalgam and outlined the repeated provocations of terrorism emanating from across the border, laid out the details of Operation Sindoor, and emphasised India's firm resolve in countering any future acts of terrorism. Senator Booker unequivocally condemned terrorism and expressed sympathies with the victims. The conversation also touched upon broader themes in the India-US strategic partnership, which enjoys robust support, Tharoor said, adding that he hopes to meet Booker Next time in person.
