Families and couple among Britons feared to have been on doomed Air India flight

Couples taking their children on holiday and wellness influencers are among the Britons feared dead after Air India flight AI171 crashed.
More than 260 people were killed when the Boeing 787 Dreamliner bound for London went down in Ahmedabad less than 30 seconds after takeoff.
The aircraft crashed into a medical college, tearing through a dining hall on the top floor, before breaking apart and bursting into flames.

There were 242 passengers and crew members on board, Air India said. The sole survivor was Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, 40, one of 53 British nationals.
The victims have not been officially identified, with DNA tests being carried out.
A Muslim community group in Gloucester identified three of the victims as Akeel Nanawaba, 36, his wife Hannaa Vorajee, 30, and their daughter Sarah, four.
The couple ran a global recruitment agency, with business partner Shoyeb Khan Nagori telling MailOnline: 'They were here to celebrate a family festival and to spend some time with Akeel's father.'
Many more Britons are feared dead including Javed Ali Syed, a hotel manager at the Best Western Kensington Olympia Hotel and his wife Mariam, the tabloid said.
They were with their two young children, Amani, four, and Zayn.
Fiongal Greenlaw-Meek and Jamie Meek, based in London, had been travelling in India before the crash and posted videos of their holiday on social media.
In a video posted on the official Wellness Foundry Instagram, the couple were seen waiting at an airport gate.
'We are at the airport, just boarding. Goodbye India,' Fiongal said. 'My biggest takeaway is to not lose your patience with your partner. We're going back happily, happily, happily calm.'
Greenlawe appeared on ITV's This Morning in January to talk about wellness.
The programme's former editor, Martin Frizell, praised his 'vibrancy' in an Instagram post, writing: 'He was passionate about auras and although I'm a sceptical sort, his vibrancy and sheer enthusiasm won folk over.' https://www.instagram.com/p/DKzsG71IJMY/
Widow Raxa Modha, 55, her two-year-old grandson Rudra, and her daughter-in-law Yasha Kamdar, are also believed to have been onboard. More Trending
The mother-of-three's husband, Kishor, wanted to spend his final days in India. After his death, Raxa was set to fly home to Northamptonshire.
Raj Mishra, the mayor of Wellingborough in Northamptonshire, said in a tribute: 'I extend my deepest condolences to their families, friends and all those affected by this heartbreaking event.'
Air India also said 169 passengers are Indian nationals, one is Canadian, and seven are Portuguese.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said the crash was 'devastating', while his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, said it was 'heartbreaking beyond words'.

Bristol student's ‘miracle' of missing doomed Air India flight
A student has described the 'miracle' of missing the Air India flight that crashed this week because she was stuck in a traffic jam on the way to the airport. Bhoomi Chauhan, 28, was turned away by airline staff at Ahmedabad airport as she prepared to return to her home in Bristol, where she lives with her husband. The business administration student said she pleaded to be allowed on to the flight. 'I am completely devastated after hearing about the loss [of lives]. My body is literally shivering,' she said. 'My mind is totally blank now after hearing all that has happened.' • What could have caused the Air India plane crash? The theories explored Chauhan said she had been frustrated with the driver for the delay in arriving at the airport following a 125-mile journey. 'Just because of those ten minutes, I could not board the flight,' she said. She told the BBC: 'We left the airport and stood at a place to drink tea and after a while, before leaving … we were talking to the travel agent about how to get a refund for the ticket. There, I got a call that the plane had gone down. This is totally a miracle for me.' Chauhan said she was driven from the city of Ankleshwar but was held up in Ahmedabad's city centre traffic. She arrived at the airport at 12:20pm, ten minutes after boarding was due to commence. She had already checked in online and was allocated seat 36G. 'The flight was scheduled to take off at 1:10pm. The boarding procedure was over at 12:10pm and I reached at 12.20pm,' she told NDTV. 'I had reached the checking-in gate and requested them to allow me to board the flight. I told them I shall clear all the formalities quickly, but they did not allow me to proceed.' She added: 'When I missed the flight, I was dejected. Only thing that I had in mind was, 'If I had started a little early, I would have boarded the plane',' she said. 'I requested airline staff to allow me inside as I am only ten minutes [late]. I told them that I am the last passenger and so please allow me to board the plane, but they did not.' She told local media: 'When I came to know that the flight had crashed, I went totally numb. I thank my mother Goddess that I am safe, but the incident is absolutely terrifying.' Chauhan was in India to visit her parents for the first time in two years. Her mother, who was not named, said: 'We thank God for protecting my daughter. She left her child with me, and it's all because of God's blessings. Because of that child, she is with me. By God's grace she returned home safely.'

Air India crash: What we know about the Boeing 787 Dreamliner
An Air India flight travelling from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick crashed on Thursday shortly after take off. Aviation authorities confirmed the crash involved a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, an aircraft capable of carrying between 248 and 336 passengers across its three models. Faiz Ahmed Kidwai, the Director General of the Directorate of Civil Aviation said there were 232 passengers and 12 crew members onboard at the time. This is the first crash ever of a Boeing 787 aircraft, according to the Aviation Safety Network database. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is described by the company as its "bestselling passenger widebody" with three models capable of accommodating between 248 and 336 passengers. Boeing claim the aircraft has completed five million flights and transported more than one billion passengers, since it was first introduced in 2009. The 787 aircraft which crashed on Thursday was first flown in December 2013. Boeing claim the 787 Dreamliner was the first aircraft to use lightweight composite materials in it's construction, leading to a reduced weight and lower fuel usage compared to the aircrafts it replaced. It was also the first to make extensive use of lithium ion batteries, aLthough in 2013 this led to the entire fleet being grounded due to their overheating, which in some cases sparked fires. There are currently more than one thousand 787s in operation globally, according to the latest information from Boeing. Air India has 34 of the aircraft in its fleet, according to aviation analysts Cirium. The jet is flown by a number of other airlines serving the UK, such as British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Tui Airways. Concerns about the safety of Boeing's 787s have previously been raised. A Boeing 787 Dreamliner operated by Ethiopian Airlines caught fire while parked at Heathrow airport with no passengers onboard in 2013 - an investigation found the fire was probably caused by a short circuit. In 2024, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) investigated claims made by a Boeing employee that due to a change in the aircraft's manufacturing process the plane's structure was unsafe and prone to breaking apart mid-flight after extended use. The employee said due to parts of the aircraft arriving for assembly from different manufacturers, large elements often did not fit together perfectly. Denying these safety concerns, Boeing said there were "fully confident in the 787 Dreamliner because of the comprehensive work done to ensure the quality and long-term safety of the aircraft." They added that claims about the structural integrity of their aircraft were "inaccurate," and the FAA "has validated that the aircraft will maintain its durability and service life over several decades, and these issues do not present any safety concerns."
