
Nearly half of Australians fell victim to a cybercrime in 2024 despite increased confidence in technology
According to the Cybercrime in Australia 2024 report released on Wednesday, 47.4 per cent or respondents said they had fallen victim to a cybercrime in the previous 12 months.
It was a slight rise from the 46.6 per cent who said they had been a victim of cybercrime in the previous report.
The most prevalent cybercrime reported was online abuse or harassment with 26.8 per cent of respondents saying they had fallen victim to it.
Nearly 22 per cent of respondents said they were a victim of an identity crime while 20.6 per cent had faced malware attacks.
Frauds and scams impacted 9.5 per cent of respondents while 25 per cent had been notified of a data breach of one of their accounts.
Young Australians, First Nations peoples and those in the LGBTQIA+ community were all at a higher risk of digital attacks.
Australian Institute of Criminology research manager and report author Anthony Morgan said despite a high numbers of victims, reporting remained low.
'What we found is that overall rates of victimisation from cyber crime remain high, reporting to police remains low and a large proportion of victims are negatively impacted by cyber crime,' he said.
'We still have room to improve in terms of people's use of online safety strategies.'
Mr Morgan said the impacts of cyber crime went beyond the financial side of things.
'We often measure cyber crime in terms of financial losses, but when you survey the community, you get a different picture from what you see in reported data,' he said.
'Actually cyber crime within the broader community is a high volume, relatively low yield crime, so most people don't lose large amounts of money but obviously a small proportion lose very large amounts of money.
'What we show in our survey is that the harms extend well beyond those financial losses, one in four respondents to the survey said they were negatively impacted by cyber crime that includes practical harms, social harms, health impacts, legal harms, as well as the financial losses.'
Despite the rise in cybercrime, an increase in respondents said they had either a moderate, high or very high ability to use technology, rising from 88.4 per cent to 89.2 per cent over 12 months.
Mr Morgan said it was important to not be complacent, even if you think you're well versed in using technology.
'We know that being more confident online and having what might be called digital literacy, it doesn't protect you from falling victim,' he said.
'What increases the likelihood of falling victim is how you behave online, the sorts of websites you visit, the sorts of activities you engage in online, and whether you're taking those safe steps to protect yourself.
'That's what makes a difference for people's online safety.'
Minister for Home Affairs and Cyber Security Burke urged Australians to take steps to make themselves more safe online.

'Remember these three simple steps to stay safe online – always install the latest software updates, use unique passphrases, and enable multifactor authentication wherever it's available.'

Beijing has hit back at Australian claims China is spying on Australia, saying the accusations were 'groundless' and accusing Australian intelligence agencies of operating in China. China's Ministry of State Security on Friday released a statement via its official WeChat account, appearing to take issue with recent events in Australia, including a major speech by ASIO boss Mike Burgess. 'Australian intelligence agencies advocated the 'serious threat' posed by foreign espionage activities to Australia, and even packaged themselves as innocent 'victims' in groundless accusations of 'Chinese espionage threat',' the Chinese ministry's statement said. 'In recent years, China's state security organs have successively cracked a number of espionage cases against China instigated by Australian intelligence agencies in accordance with the law, effectively safeguarding China's sovereignty, security and development interests.' The statement comes just a month after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese undertook a six-day state visit to China, as his government seeks to normalise relations with Beijing after several tense years. Mr Burgess revealed ASIO had disrupted 24 'major espionage and foreign interference' operations in the past three years alone. 'Nation states are spying at unprecedented levels, with unprecedented sophistication,' he said. 'ASIO is seeing more Australians targeted – more aggressively – than ever before.' While AUKUS and military technology secrets were targets, Australia's intellectual property and cutting edge research was also in the sights of foreign agents. And earlier this month, the Australian Federal Police charged a Chinese national with reckless foreign interference after she was allegedly tasked by China to spy on a Canberra Buddhist group. 'Foreign interference of the kind alleged is an appalling assault on Australian values, freedoms and sovereignty,' Mr Burgess said. 'In this year's annual threat assessment, I called out these types of activities and put perpetrators on notice by stating, 'we are watching, and we have zero tolerance'. 'Anyone who thinks it is acceptable to monitor, intimidate and potentially repatriate members of our diaspora communities should never underestimate our capabilities and resolve.'

Photographer and documentary-maker Hoda Afshar has won the National Photographic Portrait Prize for the second time with a powerful image that challenges Australia's treatment of First Nations children. The Melbourne-based artist took out the $50,000 prize on Friday with Untitled #01 from her 2024 series, Code Black/Riot. Created in collaboration with young people in Far North Queensland, the series highlights laws allowing children as young as 10 to be imprisoned – among the lowest ages for criminal responsibility in the world. Afshar worked with Cairns-based Youth Empowered Towards Independence and Sydney advocacy group Change the Record. Participants were invited to conceal their identities while making a personal statement. Some chose a flag, mask or face paint. The three girls in Afshar's winning image chose a simple, defiant gesture. 'The children refuse to be passive in front of the camera or be seen as broken or as victims,' Afshar says. 'They're being cheeky and playful and funny, and they want to be seen as tough. They know the camera that is pointed at them historically wanted to capture them, looking in a certain way. They refuse to be seen like that.' Iranian-born Afshar first won the prize in 2015 with Portrait of Ali (2014), cementing her place in the Australian contemporary art scene. 'Back then I was a migrant artist who was trying really hard to convince everyone I've got something to say that could be worth hearing,' she says. 'You have to justify your position in the new country to get people to take you seriously. That moment gave me the confidence to continue doing what I'm doing now.' The seeds of Code Black/Riot were planted years ago when Afshar met lawyer Sophie Trevitt, who was campaigning to raise the age of criminal responsibility for Indigenous children. Trevitt died in 2023, but her work left a lasting impact on Afshar.
