Scarlett Johansson's directorial debut, 'Eleanor the Great,' stars June Squibb as a 94-year-old woman who, out of grief and loneliness, does a terrible thing.
After her best friend (Rita Zohar) dies, Eleanor (Squibb) moves to New York and, after accidentally joining the wrong meeting at the Jewish Community Center, adopts her friend's story of Holocaust survival. The film builds toward a moment where Eleanor could be harshly condemned in a public forum, or not.
For Johansson, her movie speaks to the moment.
'There's a lack of empathy in the zeitgeist. It's obviously a reaction to a lot of things,' says Johansson. 'It feels to me like forgiveness feels less possible in the environment we're in.'
Johansson brought 'Eleanor the Great' to the Un Certain Regard sidebar of the Cannes Film Festival this week, unveiling a funny and tender, character-driven, New York-set indie that launches her as a filmmaker. For the 40-year-old star, it's the humble culmination of a dream that's always bounced around in her mind.

John Abraham On Being The Jism Eye Candy Who Needed To Make A Point: "It Was All About The Body Back Then"
It was Steven Spielberg's 1993 Holocaust drama Schindler's List that inspired John Abraham to pursue a career in cinema. After featuring in several music videos and many modelling assignments, he entered the industry in the early 2000s. And when that happened, it was all about Jism, the Bollywood actor-producer said, tongue firmly in cheek as he referred to his 2003 debut film, an erotic thriller. "It was all about the body (then). And I didn't shy away from it. There's a huge audience that appreciates that. And I love it. But it was also very important for me to make a point. So Kabul Express, New York, Madras Cafe and The Diplomat, these relevant films started coming in. But once I became a producer, I've gone full out," John Abraham told PTI in a recent interview. But how did he manage to break out of his early eye-candy image? "You can't break your image by doing 40 interviews and saying 'I want to break that image'. My work speaks for what I'm doing. When people talk to you, you understand what you're about from the way they speak with you," he added. Barely nine years after he debuted with Jism, John Abraham kickstarted his journey as a producer with 2012's sleeper hit and National Award winning Vicky Donor, which also marked the first feature film of Ayushmann Khurrana and Yami Gautam. Since then, he has backed films such as Madras Cafe, Batla House and Attack and several others, many of which he acted in too. The actor, who is looking forward to the release of political action thriller Tehran, said he wants his audience to explore "how India's involved with the rest of the world". "Even today, I go to my office at 7 in the morning on a non-shooting day and for the first two hours, I only catch up with what's going on in the world. John Abraham said it is important to keep abreast of geopolitics because everything is connected. "People say, 'what do we have to do with it? We only have to do with Pakistan'. That's not true. You need to understand what is happening in the geopolitics of the world to understand what is happening with India." But this doesn't mean he will stop doing the fun movies like Pathaan and Force 3. "The day I announce Force 3, I know I'll have the Force body... I hope that my commercial cinema, the hardcore commercial cinema I do, also makes a lot of sense." Tehran, a Maddock Films production that will start streaming on ZEE5 from August 14, is a fictionalised account of a true event that unfolds against the simmering global tension between Israel and Iran. Superman movie's early OTT release sparks outrage: Furious fans react, ‘Shameful and stupid decision'
James Gunn's much-awaited Superman (2025) hit Indian cinemas on July 11. Now, fans won't have to wait long to watch it at home. This release gives fans another chance to enjoy the superhero adventure. Even if they missed it in theatres or want to watch it again from their living room, here's their chance. As of August 12, Superman earned $581.1 million worldwide, including $332.4 million from the US and Canada and $248.7 million from overseas markets. It is the biggest superhero film of 2025 so far, but its international earnings are lower than its strong home performance. Top overseas markets are the UK ($32.2 million), Mexico ($21 million), Brazil ($16 million), Australia ($14 million), France ($11 million), Spain ($8.7 million), India ($7 million), Korea ($6.2 million each) and Japan ($5.8 million). While it has not broken past records from earlier DC or Marvel films, it has beaten other recent superhero releases. In fact, Superman is the third-highest grosser in 2025 worldwide, behind Jurassic World: Rebirth ($800 million) and Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning ($595 million). The film's OTT release in India will be on August 15. It will be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango at Home. Viewers who like physical copies can get it on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD starting September 23. James Gunn earlier announced the OTT release on social media. 'Why so soon?' wondered another while one user commented, 'This seems way too fast, man.' One of them used harsher words, 'Why so early?? Shameful and stupid decision, Superman is still running so strong in theatres and had a lot of box office potential left. Stuff like these damage the theatre going culture.' 'Why can't you leave it longer in theaters?' wrote another. 'I hate this new model, because it kills a movie's box office. A movie should not be available for purchase until at least three months from its debut,' came from another.
