Kuwait, Japan sign deals during Crown Prince's visit
Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled meets top Japanese officials, businessmen in Tokyo
TOKYO: Kuwait and Japan signed several memoranda of cooperation on Thursday during a formal ceremony held in Tokyo, under the patronage of His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. The agreements were signed by Kuwait's Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdullah Al-Yahya, in the presence of the Kuwaiti delegation. Details of the agreements were not disclosed. According to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), the ceremony reflected the shared commitment of both countries to strengthen and expand cooperation across key sectors.
Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled arrived in Tokyo on an official visit to Japan on Wednesday, marking the first high-level Kuwaiti visit to the country since 2016. He is also expected to visit the Japanese city of Osaka, where Kuwait is participating in Expo 2025. An official reception ceremony for His Highness the Crown Prince was organized by the Japanese prime minister, which included a military parade and the playing of the national anthems of the countries. The prime minister also held a banquet in honor of Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled and his accompanying delegation.
After meeting with Japanese Emperor Naruhito, His Highness the Crown Prince held a series of high-level meetings with senior Japanese officials and business leaders. He received the Governor of Tokyo, Yuriko Koike, at his residence in the Japanese capital. Present at the meeting were Foreign Minister Abdullah Al-Yahya, Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs at the Office of the Crown Prince Mazen Issa Al-Essa, Assistant Foreign Minister for the Minister's Office Affairs Ambassador Bader Saleh Al-Tunaib, Assistant Foreign Minister for Asian Affairs Ambassador Sameeh Johar Hayat, and Kuwaiti Ambassador to Japan Sami Ghassab Al-Zamanan.
His Highness also met with Japanese Member of Parliament and Chairman of the Japan-Kuwait Parliamentary Friendship Association, Eisuke Mori. The meeting was attended by the same members of the Kuwaiti delegation.
Additional engagements included meetings with Shunichi Miyanaga, Chairman of the Japan Cooperation Center for the Middle East and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and Yasuo Nishiyama, Representative Director and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Hakuhodo Japan. These meetings also took place at His Highness's residence and were attended by the same senior officials from the Kuwaiti side. — KUNA

He noted that the League has established several cooperation forums and memoranda of understanding with countries, international organizations and regional blocs, reflecting its commitment to strengthening relations with global partners. Al-Ajery highlighted the longstanding cooperation between Arab countries and Japan, which dates back to the launch of the Arab-Japanese Economic Forum in 2009 and the establishment of ministerial-level political dialogue in 2013. That year also saw the signing of a memorandum of cooperation between the Arab League and the Japanese government to encourage dialogue between civilizations and promote intellectual and cultural exchange. For his part, Japanese Ambassador to Cairo Fumio Iwai stressed that cultural dialogue among youth complements political and economic cooperation, helping to strengthen relations between Japan and the Arab world at the grassroots level. 'We believe that youth will lead future generations towards a bright future,' he said. Iwai also addressed regional developments, describing the humanitarian situation in Gaza as 'extremely harsh.' He praised the Arab League's efforts to improve conditions in the Strip and push for a ceasefire and the establishment of a Palestinian state. The envoy reiterated Japan's firm support for a two-state solution and said Tokyo has provided $230 million in humanitarian aid to Palestine since October 2023, including assistance to the Palestinian Authority, health care and food relief. The forum's agenda includes discussions on 'Youth and Cultural Diversity: Confronting Stereotypes,' exploring challenges in intercultural interaction, the role of education in fostering tolerance, and the impact of art, culture and social media in bridging societies. KOTC earns high rating for tanker performance
KOTC HQ KUWAIT: Kuwait Oil Tanker Company (KOTC) announced Tuesday that the Kuwaiti flag has been ranked among the high-performance categories in the latest oil tanker flag state performance list (2022–2024) issued by the Tokyo Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), a key international maritime body. In a statement to KUNA, KOTC said that 30 inspections were carried out on vessels registered under the Kuwaiti flag during the assessment period, with no detentions recorded. This, the company noted, underscores the operational excellence of KOTC, which represents the majority of Kuwait-flagged vessels. KOTC affirmed that the achievement reflects its strict adherence to the highest global standards of safety, quality, and maintenance, as well as its compliance with international maritime regulations. It added that the recognition enhances Kuwait's reputation in international maritime forums.
