PETALING JAYA : A former election candidate has been sentenced to 10 years in jail after pleading guilty in the Seremban High Court to culpable homicide not amounting to murder over her husband's death three years ago.
Justice Rohani Ibrahim meted out the sentence on Lau Seck Yan, 58, after she pleaded guilty to the amended charge, Sinar Harian reported.
Lau, who ran as an independent candidate in the 2018 Port Dickson by-election, previously pleaded not guilty to murder.
Rohani ordered Lau's jail sentence to commence from the date of her arrest on Jan 23, 2022.
Lau was charged with causing bodily injury that was likely to cause death to Poh Seng Hiap, 55, at a house in Rasah Kemayan Golf & Country Township, Seremban 2 at 3.30pm on Jan 23, 2022.
The former lecturer at a private college was charged under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code, punishable by up to 30 years in prison and a fine upon conviction.
Her lawyer, Kitson Foong, had asked the court for a lower jail term since Lau had pleaded guilty and did not have a criminal record.
Deputy public prosecutor Khairunnisa Hazwani Omar sought a sentence commensurate with the seriousness of the crime, citing public interest in the case.
The 2018 Port Dickson by-election was won by PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, who defeated a candidate from PAS as well as five independent candidates, including Lau, who received 214 votes.

‘No detail is too small': Kuching mother seeks public help, information to find husband who vanished in China nine years ago

KUCHING, June 9 — A mother of five is seeking public help to locate the whereabouts of her husband, who left for China in 2016 for greener pastures. Identified as Kho, she told Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak publicity secretary Michael Kong that her last contact with her husband Tang Thiew Hing was when he arrived in Shenzhen. 'I have been raising our children alone after losing contact with my husband several years ago,' she said during a recent meeting with Kong at his office here. According to Kho, Tang had gone to China in the hope of securing better job opportunities to support their family. She told Kong that the family has been trying to locate Tang all these years but to no avail. 'Understandably, Madam Kho is deeply concerned for his safety and well-being. With no closure and growing responsibilities as the sole caregiver to their children, she is now seeking any help that may lead to tracing her husband's whereabouts,' he said in a statement yesterday He added this was not just about seeking answers but giving a family hope and potentially a reunion after years of uncertainty and silence. Kong thus appealed to anyone who may have information about Tang to come forward. 'No detail is too small. Your help could mean the world to this struggling family. If you have lost contact with a loved one overseas or know someone who has, we encourage you to file a police report and also reach out to your nearest consulate or community service centre for support. 'Time is crucial in such cases, and early reporting can make a significant difference,' he said. Individuals who have information about Tang are advised to call Kong on 019-8199191. It was informed that Tang was born in 1972 in Kuching, and that his parents and an elder sister are deceased. — The Borneo Post

Perlis media and locals receive korban meat in Prime Minister's Aidiladha gesture

KANGAR: Around 100 local media practitioners and residents in Perlis received korban meat (sacrificial slaughter) today in conjunction with this year's Aidiladha celebration, following a donation from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Perlis Journalists Association (PWP) president Syed Azlan Sayid Hizar said the contribution, channelled through the Prime Minister's Office, reflected ongoing efforts to engage underserved communities while acknowledging the media's role during festive occasions. 'This initiative was coordinated by the Gabungan Kelab Media Malaysia (GKMM) and distributed not only in Perlis through PWP, but also in the Federal Territory, Kedah, Penang and Perak through their respective media clubs,' he told reporters after the korban event today. Syed Azlan added that the slaughter of one cow, carried out in collaboration with residents of Kampung Bilal Uduh in Chuping, marked the first time such a programme had been organised by PWP with support from the Prime Minister. He noted that the initiative also allowed PWP members to reach out to underprivileged groups and asnaf (eligible zakat recipients), expressing hope that the programme would continue in the future years.
