Problems of farmers have only intensified: BJD

Bargarh: Calling the ruling BJP 'anti-farmer,' the Opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Monday held a farmers' rally in Bargarh, Odisha's rice bowl, demanding a minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 3,100 per quintal for paddy, simplification of Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) norms and an end to farmer exploitation during procurement. The rally, attended by thousands of farmers from all the districts of the State's western region, criticised the BJP government's agriculture policy in Odisha. Speaking at the event, BJD MLA and farmers' wing leader Prasanna Acharya alleged that in the last 14 months under the 'double-engine government,' the problems of Odisha's farmers have only intensified. 'The BJP promised a lot, but farmers have only faced increasing exploitation and systemic failures,' Acharya claimed. The party submitted a memorandum to the Bargarh District Collector, to be conveyed to the President of India, highlighting urgent farmer issues. 'The State government had imposed a complicated registration process for farmers, which clearly reflected its anti-farmer stance. This complex process was intended to exclude farmers from selling their paddy. The BJD had opposed this decision, and due to the collective voice of the farmers under the party's leadership, the State government hastily withdrew the decision on Sunday,' the memorandum said. It also alleged that farmers were not getting the benefits of Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana introduced by the BJP government. The insurance companies get benefit while farmers suffer, the BJD claimed, adding that there is huge deduction on weight of paddy at the government mandis. 'The BJP's election promises, such as procurement without deductions, middlemen-free mandis and payments within 48 hours have become a joke,' it said, alleging that the BJP government has denied benefits to sharecroppers and marginal farmers in the CM Kisan scheme. The Swaminathan Commission had recommended providing Minimum Support Price at 1.5 times the cost of production, the party said, adding that the BJP government did not implement it. 'During an election rally in Bargarh, the Prime Minister had promised an MSP of Rs 3,100 per quintal for paddy. That promise, however, has vanished into thin air. Hence, the BJD demands that MSP be fixed in line with the Swaminathan Committee's recommendations and be made a legal right,' the memorandum added.

Vice-Presidential Polls: Oppn fields former SC judge Sudarshan Reddy

New Delhi: The Opposition on Tuesday named former Supreme Court judge Justice B Sudarshan Reddy as its 'joint candidate' for the September 9 Vice-Presidential elections, which it termed an 'ideological battle' against the BJP-led NDA which has nominated Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan. If the BJP intended to put the DMK in a spot by choosing a Tamil as the NDA candidate, a section in the Opposition believes they have returned fire by choosing a Telugu that could create a political dilemma for N Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP and K Chandrasekhar Rao-led BRS. AAP, which has left the INDIA bloc, has also pledged its support to Justice Reddy, as the INDIA leaders maintained he is a 'joint Opposition candidate and not just the bloc's'. Sources said Arvind Kejriwal was briefed by Trinamool Congress' Derek O'Brien about the consensus reached over the candidate following which the AAP chief gave his party's green signal. The name was given the final stamp at a meeting of INDIA bloc leaders at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's official residence here, which was preceded by a meeting on Monday evening and late night consultations among top leaders. Sources said they were pitching the battle as 'Constitution and Idea of India versus RSS-BJP'. The announcement also caps two days of intense consultations during which names of former ISRO scientist Mylswamy Annadurai, Mahatma Gandhi's great grandson Tushar Gandhi and former Rajya Sabha MP Bhalchandra Mungekar among others also cropped up. Flanked by INDIA leaders, Kharge told a press conference, 'This Vice-Presidential contest is an ideological battle. All Opposition parties have nominated Justice B Sudarshan Reddy as their joint Reddy is one of India's most distinguished and progressive jurists.' 'He has been a consistent and courageous champion of social, economic and political justice. He reflects, fully, the values that shaped our country's freedom movement so profoundly, and the values on which our country's Constitution and democracy have been anchored. All these values are under assault and therefore, our collective and determined resolve to fight this election,' Kharge said.

'Stable, predictable, constructive ties': Modi, China's Wang Yi discuss steps to ease tensions

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at the latter's official residence, 7 Lok Kalyan Marg, in New Delhi, as India continues efforts to ease tensions in ties with China. The meeting took place against the backdrop of US President Donald Trump's recent move to impose tariffs, including a 50 per cent tariff on India. Modi stressed the need for peace and stability along the India-China border and reiterated India's commitment to a fair and mutually acceptable boundary resolution. The PM wrote on X after meeting Chinese FM Wang Yi: "Glad to meet Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Since my meeting with President Xi in Kazan last year, India-China relations have made steady progress guided by respect for each other's interests and sensitivities. I look forward to our next meeting in Tianjin on the sidelines of the SCO Summit. Stable, predictable, constructive ties between India and China will contribute significantly to regional as well as global peace and prosperity.' Renowned for his claims of mediating peace between rival nations, Trump may have inadvertently set the stage for an unexpected thaw in India-China ties. Despite Beijing's backing of Pakistan during Operation Sindoor after the Pahalgam terror attack, the recent easing of strains between New Delhi and Beijing is seen, in part, as a fallout of Trump's actions, though he has taken no credit. According to the ministry of external affairs (MEA), Wang Yi is in India at the invitation of National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval to take part in the 24th round of Special Representatives' (SR) Talks on the India-China boundary issue. During his two-day visit, Wang Yi also held bilateral discussions with External Affairs Minister Jaishankar. Sources indicated that China has promised to address three of India's concerns - rare earths, fertilisers, and tunnel-boring machines. During his public remarks, Jaishankar underlined that 'differences must not become disputes, nor competition conflict,' adding that the visit offered both sides an opportunity to review bilateral ties and exchange views on global and regional developments.
