Problems of farmers have only intensified: BJD
Speaking at the event, BJD MLA and farmers' wing leader Prasanna Acharya alleged that in the last 14 months under the 'double-engine government,' the problems of Odisha's farmers have only intensified.
'The BJP promised a lot, but farmers have only faced increasing exploitation and systemic failures,' Acharya claimed. The party submitted a memorandum to the Bargarh District Collector, to be conveyed to the President of India, highlighting urgent farmer issues.
'The State government had imposed a complicated registration process for farmers, which clearly reflected its anti-farmer stance. This complex process was intended to exclude farmers from selling their paddy. The BJD had opposed this decision, and due to the collective voice of the farmers under the party's leadership, the State government hastily withdrew the decision on Sunday,' the memorandum said.
It also alleged that farmers were not getting the benefits of Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana introduced by the BJP government. The insurance companies get benefit while farmers suffer, the BJD claimed, adding that there is huge deduction on weight of paddy at the government mandis.
'The BJP's election promises, such as procurement without deductions, middlemen-free mandis and payments within 48 hours have become a joke,' it said, alleging that the BJP government has denied benefits to sharecroppers and marginal farmers in the CM Kisan scheme. The Swaminathan Commission had recommended providing Minimum Support Price at 1.5 times the cost of production, the party said, adding that the BJP government did not implement it.
'During an election rally in Bargarh, the Prime Minister had promised an MSP of Rs 3,100 per quintal for paddy. That promise, however, has vanished into thin air. Hence, the BJD demands that MSP be fixed in line with the Swaminathan Committee's recommendations and be made a legal right,' the memorandum added.

New Delhi: Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Wednesday criticised the 130th Constitution Amendment Bill that sought to allow the removal of the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and ministers if they were held on serious criminal charges. The Congress leader accused the ruling BJP of using its majority in Parliament to push through the bill with the intention of targeting the opposition. He called the move "draconian" and politically motivated. The 130th Constitution Amendment Bill seeks to remove the Prime Minister or Chief Ministers who are facing allegations of corruption or serious offences and have been detained for 30 consecutive days. Speaking to ANI, the Congress leader called the bill a political weapon and said, "The intention of the ruling side to pass this bill using its majority is not right. This will be used as a tool to target the opposition. This is a draconian act." He further questioned the timing of the bill, linking it to ongoing debates over the allegation on the Election Commission of 'vote theft'. "At a time when questions are rising against the Election Commission, there is panic in the ruling party, and this issue has now been raised to divert attention from it?" Adhir Ranjan told ANI. Earlier in the day, slamming the BJP government over the introduction of the 130th Constitution Amendment Bill in Lok Sabha, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said that legislation, if passed, will allow the ruling party at the Centre to register false cases against Chief Ministers of the opposition parties and it will shake the democratic foundations of the country. Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025, to further amend the Constitution of India and the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, apart from the bill to amend the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. He also proposed sending the bllls to a joint committee of Parliament.

Pakistan extends airspace ban on Indian flights for another month
Pakistan on Wednesday extended its airspace ban on Indian aircraft until September 23. The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) issued a fresh NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) announcing the one-month extension, covering both civilian and military aircraft that are Indian-owned, operated, or leased."All aircraft operated by Indian airlines will not be allowed to use Pakistani airspace. The ban also remains in place for military and civilian aircraft that are Indian-owned or leased," the authority airspace closure was first imposed on April 23 for one month following the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 26 people. The initial ban barred Indian carriers from flying over Pakistan. India responded on April 30 with a reciprocal airspace closure for Pakistani aircraft, starting a series of tit-for-tat restrictions. The ban was first extended on May 23. In July, Pakistan further extended the closure until August 24, affecting hundreds of flights LOSES RS 1,240 CRORE IN AIRSPACE BANThe prolonged closure has hit Pakistan's aviation sector hard. The loss stemmed from transit charges as 100-150 Indian aircraft fly daily, cutting Pakistan's overflight traffic by almost 20 per Defence Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif confirmed that the ban had caused significant revenue losses. "The closure has impacted our overflying charges and transit traffic severely," he restrictions have created major challenges for airlines, forcing longer routes that burn more fuel and stretch flight times. Amendment new strategy by neo fascist politics: CM
T'puram: Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that Sangh Parivar was employing a new strategy to target non-BJP state govts and the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025– introduced in Lok Sabha on Wednesday – can only be seen as part of the central govt's political decision. "This is a continuation of the vendetta politics using central investigative agencies. There was a longstanding attempt to destabilize state govts by weaponizing central agencies. As part of that, chief ministers and ministers who hold constitutional responsibilities in the country were imprisoned for extended periods. The frustration over their refusal to resign is what prompted the hasty introduction of this amendment," he said. The attempt is to trap individuals in fake cases, imprison them and disqualify them—this is the new experiment of neo-fascist politics, said Vijayan. "BJP members must explain under what constitutional morality those arrested in corruption cases become sanctified upon joining their party. The move to destabilize state govts is a continuation of efforts to undermine the constitutional rights of states and establish that governors have veto power over legislatures," he said. Vijayan said strong protest should arise from all democratic believers against the anti-democratic moves of Sangh Parivar targeting political opponents. There must be a united move against this amendment, which paves the way for political misuse, he added. Meanwhile, opposition leader VD Satheesan said the proposed amendment in the Constitution Bill, goes against the basic principles of Indian laws and the opposition will strongly protest against this move. Under existing laws, a person is guilty of an offence only when a court of law convicts him or her. "Piloting this bill itself is against natural justice. It is against the principles of law, basic principles of law, because when a person is convicted by a court after a long procedure of trial, then only he/she will be a convicted person; till then, there is a feeling that he/she is an innocent person," said Satheesan. The opposition leader said with this, any central govt can use central agencies to register cases against any ministers of the state govts that are ruled by opposition parties. This can be misused for political gains. This is against the basic principles of law and against natural justice, he said.
