"A lot is happening in terms of Agentic AI." This headline is everywhere but is it truly happening, or is it just another misleading hype in the tech world? Gartner has termed this trend as "agent washing"—the rebranding of existing tools such as AI assistants, robotic process automation (RPA), and chatbots, without any substantial agentic capabilities.
According to Gartner's latest report, more than 40 per cent of agentic AI projects will be cancelled by the end of 2027 due to escalating costs, unclear business value, or inadequate risk controls. Of the thousands of vendors claiming to offer agentic AI solutions, Gartner estimates only around 130 are legitimate.
"Most agentic AI projects right now are early-stage experiments or proof-of-concepts driven largely by hype and often misapplied," said Anushree Verma, Senior Director Analyst at Gartner. "This can blind organisations to the real cost and complexity of deploying AI agents at scale, stalling projects before they move into production. They need to cut through the hype to make careful, strategic decisions about where and how they apply this emerging technology."
The high cost of agentic AI
One of the major barriers to meaningful adoption is cost. So how much does it actually take to build agentic AI?
"For enterprises starting from scratch, developing Agentic AI internally could cost anywhere between INR 50 crore to INR 200 crore (approx. USD 6 million to USD 24 million) over 3–5 years, depending on scale, vertical, and use case," said Apurv Agrawal, Co-founder and CEO, SquadStack. "And even then, you're not guaranteed deployment success unless your systems are robust, your data flywheels are strong, and your change management is bulletproof."
So, what will it take?
Despite these early-stage challenges, the potential of agentic AI is immense. Gartner predicts that by 2028, at least 15 per cent of day-to-day work decisions will be made autonomously by agentic AI up from zero in 2024. Additionally, 33 per cent of enterprise software applications are expected to include agentic AI by 2028, compared to less than one per cent in 2024.
To prepare for this transformation, organisations must adopt significant mindset and infrastructure shifts. The voices in the Indian AI space weighed in:

We often say that automation isn't AI and while many companies stop at basic task automation, what's truly needed is AI that works, understands, reasons, and adapts in real-time to deliver business outcomes."
"To support this, companies need to leverage API-first, modular system designs, which enable flexibility, allow for rapid development, and orchestrate AI workflows seamlessly across business areas while maintaining an engaging, human-like experience. Ultimately, businesses must understand that AI is not just a tool for automated responses but a way to improve and personalise customer engagement," added Beerud Sheth, Co-founder & CEO, Gupshup.
However, at this early stage, agentic AI can only be pursued where it delivers clear value or ROI.
"To get real value from agentic AI, organisations must focus on enterprise productivity, rather than just individual task augmentation," Verma said. "They can start by using AI agents for decision-making, automation for routine workflows, and assistants for simple retrieval. It's about driving business value through cost, quality, speed, and scale."

In each case, critical decisions can't wait for a network to reconnect. That's where offline AI becomes indispensable—delivering intelligence and support right where it's needed, with no signal required. Smarter Doesn't Mean More Autonomous—It Means More Aware There's a growing buzz around AI agents—task-completing tools designed to follow instructions, automate workflows and take action with minimal human input. But agentic AI is something different and more powerful. Agentic AI goes beyond agents. It's not just about executing commands—it's about reasoning through decisions, adapting to changing conditions and acting with awareness of goals, context and constraints. It's AI with a sense of responsibility, not just automation. In high-stakes environments, the goal isn't full autonomy for autonomy's sake. The goal is intelligence. And that means: • Knowing when to act and when to escalate • Making decisions with incomplete or conflicting data • Offering guidance without overstepping boundaries • Delivering value, even when disconnected from the network The smartest AI doesn't just do; it understands. It knows when to step forward, when to hand off and how to support humans in the moment. And it's not about replacing people. It's about reinforcing them with AI that's reliable, responsive and always aware of its role. Innovating With Offline Capabilities In Mind So, what can tech leaders do with all of this? If you're building products or deploying AI in high-stakes, low-connectivity environments, offline capability isn't a 'nice to have.' It's foundational. But that doesn't mean you need to build it all yourself—in fact, you probably shouldn't. The fastest path to impact isn't building a custom offline agentic AI solution. It's investing in a platform that's already done the hard work—one that's been tested in the field, built to run in real-world conditions and designed with the edge in mind. Here are a few things to consider when evaluating platforms: 1. Look for solutions purpose-built for your industry. Generic AI tools often fall short in high-stakes environments. Prioritize platforms trained on domain-specific data and tuned for your workflows, not just general-purpose chatbots with a new label. 2. Demand offline-by-design, not just offline-capable. There's a difference between a tool that can work offline and one that was built to. Ask how the platform handles connectivity loss, what data it caches locally and how it syncs once back online. 3. Ask about field-tested deployments. Has the platform been used in environments like yours (e.g., factory floors, remote clinics or wind farms)? Real-world resilience can't be faked in a demo. 4. Think beyond the AI model. Offline agentic AI isn't just about the model—it's about the ecosystem. That includes lightweight interfaces, smart data sync, embedded escalation paths and the ability to run on limited hardware. 5. Avoid the DIY trap. Building your own system may sound appealing, but stitching together LLMs, offline logic, device compatibility and user-friendly UX is a massive, ongoing lift. The hidden costs add up fast. Investing in a platform that gives you a running start allows your teams to focus on what matters most: delivering outcomes. Because when the signal drops, your AI still needs to show up. While beaches are where we unwind, play, and connect with nature, they're also under constant threat from plastic pollution and human debris. That's where BeBot comes in. BeBot, an all-electric beach-cleaning robot developed in Italy by Niteko Robotics in partnership with 4ocean and Poralu Marine, is quietly transforming environmental technology. Its cleaning capacity is impressive. BeBot can cover up to 32,200 square feet of beach in a single hour, which is 20 to 30 times more effective than manual trash collection. The robot can remove up to 200 pounds of debris in one session, targeting items like plastic bottles, cigarette butts, food packaging, and cotton buds. BeBot's design allows it to dig up to about four inches into the sand, and its sifting grids, which measure roughly half an inch by half an inch, capture even the smallest pieces of plastic and trash that would be difficult for people to collect by hand. Remote operation is another standout feature. BeBot can be controlled from up to 950 feet away, giving operators the flexibility to clean large or crowded beaches safely. Its unique track system distributes pressure evenly across the sand, which helps prevent beach erosion and protects sensitive habitats such as turtle nesting sites. The robot's battery can last up to three hours on a full charge, and some models can run for as long as eight hours. BeBot is not limited to trash collection. Its modular design supports a variety of attachments, allowing it to rake seaweed and algae, level sand, and carry heavy loads such as beach chairs, umbrellas, or even jet skis. With the sifter removed, BeBot can transport up to 900 pounds, making it a valuable tool for both public and private beaches, nature reserves, golf courses, and other sandy environments. BeBot has already demonstrated its effectiveness in places like Lake Tahoe, where Eco-Clean Solutions deployed it to clean over one million square feet of shoreline across twenty beaches. Videos of BeBot in action show the robot digging up all kinds of debris, including flip-flops and cigarette filters. The robot has also been used on beaches in Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Florida, and North Carolina. In each location, BeBot has received praise for its ability to remove hard-to-spot debris and for raising public awareness about the dangers of microplastics. BeBot is making a difference by protecting wildlife and ecosystems. Plastic pollution is not just unsightly; it is deadly for marine life. Millions of tons of plastic enter the oceans each year, harming hundreds of species, including nearly half of all marine animals. BeBot's gentle cleaning process reduces these threats without disturbing sensitive habitats or compressing turtle eggs. Cleaner beaches lead to healthier ecosystems and better experiences for visitors. Because BeBot operates quietly and efficiently, it is ideal for popular tourist destinations where traditional machinery would be disruptive or damaging. The robot also sparks important conversations about pollution and inspires communities to take action, complementing human-led cleanups by targeting the small plastics that often go unnoticed.
