
WATCH: Hospital group provides free surgeries
This was Busamed's group-wide campaign through their UniversalCare@Busamed programme, the group's ongoing commitment to fulfilling their purpose of empowering communities to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.
Roxy Naidoo, marketing manager at Busamed Hillcrest Private Hospital, said in tribute to Nelson Mandela's 67 years of public service, their goal is to perform 67 surgeries across the Busamed group during July 2025.

The majority of these surgeries took place on Mandela Day, July 18.
'All procedures are offered at no cost to the patients. Services are donated by our surgeons, anaesthetists, nursing staff, allied professionals, and hospital teams.
'Medical consumables and pharmaceuticals are sponsored by our valued industry partners.'
According to Naidoo, on the day of surgeries, employees will have the opportunity to volunteer in any capacity — whether within their professional role or in support activities such as admissions, patient transport, catering, housekeeping, or hosting families.
'This initiative aligns with our ongoing UniversalCare@Busamed programme, representing a tangible, compassionate demonstration of our purpose, to empower our communities to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.
'It's an opportunity for our teams to come together in service of our patients and communities, honouring the legacy of Nelson Mandela through real, life-altering impact.'

Busamed hospital changes lives on Mandela Day
Mandela Day was not only about giving back to the community. At Busamed Lowveld Private Hospital lives were changed. On July 18, in honour of Mandela Day, the Universal Care team at the hospital initiated a new campaign in which community members, who were in need of surgeries or on long state hospital waiting lists, could apply for surgeries, free of charge. The team reviewed the cases and selected 67 patients to achieve their goal of performing 67 procedures in July, most of them on this celebratory day. The team contributed to 30 circumcision procedures to assist young boys who were in need of safe surgery, and provided free wellness screenings to educate them. The other unsung heroes who volunteered to assist with the surgeries included anaesthetists, nursing staff, allied professionals and hospital teams. The employees also had the opportunity to volunteer, whether within their professional roles, or in support activities such as admissions, patient transport, catering, housekeeping or hosting families. Soekie Dierks, the hospital manager, volunteered to help clean surgical instruments and shared that it was fun to learn new things. The Busamed team will also hold a cataract week in October. They will remove cataracts, pro bono, for a group of selected patients in honour of Eye Care Awareness Month.

Ermelo Hospital staff bring fresh care to patients on Mandela Day
ERMELO – The staff of Ermelo Provincial Hospital's Outpatient Department (OPD) celebrated Mandela Day on July 18 by sharing kindness and nourishment. Patients who were waiting in line were pleasantly surprised to receive packets of fresh fruit, a gesture that brought smiles and comfort to their day. Mandela Day, observed annually on Madiba's birthday, encourages individuals and communities to dedicate 67 minutes to community service in honour of his 67 years of leadership and activism. The Ermelo Hospital OPD team embraced this spirit wholeheartedly, choosing a simple yet impactful way to give back to those in need. The initiative was met with gratitude from patients, many of whom expressed their appreciation for the thoughtful gesture.
