
Fatal Fury: City Of The Wolves review - Street Fighter's greatest rival returns
As a new generation of consoles approaches it's interesting to think what their technical improvements might mean for various genres. That's assuming the next gen Xbox and PlayStation 6 are more powerful and don't instead focus on a new portable design, as seems possible from recent rumours. Whatever happens though, it's probably a good bet that it won't matter to fighting games.
The Fatal Fury series dates back to 1991 and was created by the original director of Street Fighter, Takashi Nishiyama, as a response to Street Fighter 2, which he wasn't involved with. The original was very well regarded, but because it was a Neo Geo game it ended up being much less well known. Subsequent games did make it onto other formats, but the series is probably best known today because of the cameo of frontman Terry Bogard in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
For such a long running series there have been surprisingly few entries over the years, but 1999's Garou: Mark Of The Wolves (the franchise's Japanese name is Garō Densetsu, meaning Hungry Wolf Legend) is widely regarded as one of the best 2D fighting games of all time and a close rival to contemporary Street Fighter 3. The subtitle to this belated sequel is clearly meant to be reminiscent of that and the best thing we can say about it, is that it doesn't betray that legacy.
Although it was released only a few months after Street Fighter 2, the original Fatal Fury was still remarkably similar to Capcom's game – despite Street Fighter 1 being very much a diamond in the rough. Right from the start, Fatal Fury had a greater emphasis on storytelling, with the travails of its main characters continuing through not just the sequels but sister series Art Of Fighting and crossover franchise King Of Fighters.
You don't need to know any background lore to enjoy City Of The Wolves but even the Arcade mode has a proper story, of sorts. It's not exactly The Last Of Us, but each character is given clear motivation and goals and, unlike most Capcom games, a non-joke ending. There's also a role-playing style single-player mode called Episodes of South Town, where you pick battles from a map and gain experience with each fight, that ups your stats and unlocks new abilities.
It still lives in the shadow of Soulcalibur 2's iconic single-player mode, complete with occasionally frustrating limitations on what moves you can use in each battle, but it's a reasonable effort for what is clearly a fairly low budget game, even if it pales next to Street Fighter 6's World Tour mode. If you're into SNK lore though it's an absolute treasure trove, almost turning into a visual novel at times.
Unlike with Street Fighter 2, SNK will have been well aware of Street Fighter 6 while making this and there are certainly many similarities. City Of The Wolves has a Rev Meter which works very similarly to Street Fighter 6's Drive Gauge , except you're building it up during a fight rather than starting with it full.
Just as with the Drive Gauge, this gives you access to special abilities, and more powerful blocks and attacks. However, if the meter overheats you can't use any Rev moves and your guard gauge will drop every time you block, until it's completely broken – which is the game's way of encouraging you to use the Rev Meter and not just let it go to waste.
This also sets up a neat risk vs. reward mechanic, where a particularly powerful combo can overheat you and leave you vulnerable immediately afterwards. A key way to avoid this, other than just being careful, is your SPG (selective potential gear), which activates when your health bar is at a certain point – as chosen by you before a match. For as long as your health bar is in the chosen zone you're considerably more powerful and can make full use of things like Rev Blows – the game's answer to Street Fighter 6's Drive Impacts.
If your eyes are already starting to glaze over at all that minutiae, we're afraid to say that City Of The Wolves' tutorials are not the best and don't even mention some of the more advanced techniques. Or if they do you're only shown how they work and not what they're used for, tactically speaking.
This is a very technical fighter and while you can have fun with it from the start it's not really the game we'd advise to anyone starting out in the genre – which is not a complaint, just a warning.
The game's roster has all the expected series regulars, including Terry, Mai, Hokutomaru, and Rock Howard. There are four new characters, with Muay Thai auctioneer Preecha being a good all-rounder for beginner players and Vox Reaper a more technical fighter focused on speed.
Those are very welcome additions but the other two are weird real-world celebrities, in the form of DJ Salvatore Ganacci and Cristiano Ronaldo. Yes, that Cristiano Ronaldo. They both feel exactly as gimmicky as they sound and not at all keeping with Fatal Fury's general aesthetic. Ronaldo's use of a football is funny for a bit, and Salvatore's moves are all based around reference to his music videos, but that all gets old very quickly.
Salvatore is clearly intended as a Dan from Street Fighter style joke character and yet Ronaldo is barely any better and, tellingly, isn't even part of the Arcade mode. More Trending
If that's what's needed to give Fatal Fury some extra visibility though it's a small price to pay, in what is a very well-rounded and enjoyable 2D fighter. In terms of online it does have rollback netcode and while we'll have to see how this works post-launch the biggest problem at the moment is merely the slow and ugly menu system.
It's a quarter of a century since Mark Of The Wolves and the games industry has changed enormously since then. SNK themselves went bust in 2001 and this new incarnation is owned by a Saudi Arabian organisation; that explains the two unwanted new guest characters, both of whom have ties to the country, but you'd never guess otherwise, based on City Of The Wolves' gameplay.
It's not doing anything new, but then few fighting games ever do and even with the obvious steals from Street Fighter 6 this is a distinctive and enjoyably complex fighter, that should ensure a very healthy future for the franchise going forward.
In Short: An excellent return to form for one of the most respected 2D fighters in the business, that makes a solid impact despite some gimmicky guest characters.
Pros: Great combat system with plenty of depth, but still relatively accessible if you play as the simpler characters. More plot than usual for a fighting game and a full suite of online options.
Cons: The tutorials are not very helpful, in a game that has a lot of esoteric elements. A very ugly and slow UI and menu system. Cristiano Ronaldo and Salvatore Ganacci are a waste of roster space.

The Nintendo Partner Direct left me wondering: where's the ambition?
A reader is disappointed by the recent Partner Direct and worries the Nintendo and third party publishers are already playing it safe on Switch 2. I tuned into the July 31 Nintendo Partner Direct with cautious optimism. The Switch 2 is out, the gaming landscape is shifting, and I was ready to be wowed. Instead, I walked away feeling deflated. What should have been a showcase of bold new directions and creative risks felt more like a safe, predictable parade of sequels, remakes, and ports. If this is Nintendo's vision for the future of its hybrid console dynasty, then I'm worried they're coasting on goodwill rather than pushing boundaries. Let's start with the obvious: Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection. Sure, it's a new entry in a beloved series, and the cinematic teaser hinted at a darker tone. But no gameplay? No innovation teased beyond a vague 'new story arc'? It felt like Capcom was banking on nostalgia and brand recognition rather than showing us why this game deserves to exist on a next gen platform. Then there was Octopath Traveler 0, Square Enix's latest HD-2D offering. I love the aesthetic, I really do. But we've seen this style multiple times now. The town-building mechanic and character customisation are welcome additions, but they don't scream 'next gen'. They whisper 'safe sequel'. It's a prequel, too – another sign that publishers are more interested in mining existing IP than forging new ones. Just Dance 2026, EA Sports FC 26, Madden NFL 26 – these are annualised franchises that feel more like contractual obligations than creative endeavours. Their inclusion in the Direct made the whole thing feel like a corporate checklist rather than a celebration of gaming artistry. Even Plants Vs. Zombies: Replanted, while charming, is a remake. And Pac-Man World Re-Pac 2? Another remake. Where's the originality? I kept waiting for that one surprise. That, 'one more thing'. But it never came. Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Imprisonment was probably the closest we got to something intriguing – a canonical prequel to Tears Of The Kingdom sounds promising. But again, it's a spin-off of a spin-off. And while I appreciate the lore expansion, it's still rooted in existing material. Even the indie offerings felt muted. The Adventures Of Elliot: The Millennium Tales had potential, with its HD-2D action role-playing flair, but it didn't feel like a game that could define the Switch 2 era. It felt like filler. But even within the third party space, there's room for boldness. Where's the weird, the experimental, the genre defying? Where's the spirit of the Switch's early years, when every Direct felt like a treasure hunt? Instead, this Direct felt like Nintendo and its partners are playing it safe. Maybe too safe. The Switch 2 is supposed to usher in a new era, but this showcase felt like a continuation of the old one. And that's the problem. Nintendo seems content to ride the wave of the Switch's success without truly challenging itself – or us. More Trending I want to believe that the Switch 2 has more to offer than prettier ports and sequels. I want to see games that couldn't exist on the original Switch. I want to be surprised, delighted, and maybe even confused. That's what Nintendo used to do best. But right now? It feels like they're coasting. And if they don't shake things up soon, the Switch 2 might end up being remembered, not for its innovation, but for its complacency. Why is Sony trying to kill the concept of the video game console?
A reader worries that Sony's plans to make more of their games multiformat will destroy the entire concept of consoles, as they follow the same path as Xbox. At this point I think it's clear that Xbox is dead. They're the biggest publishers in the West but at such a terrible cost it's almost poetic. No one's buying their hardware and no one is ever likely to again. All the famous Xbox exclusive franchises are not only about to be not exclusive but they're just one more disaster away from being dead franchises. Xbox basically doesn't exist anymore, the way it used to be. All it is, is the combination of Activision Blizzard and Bethesda. Everything else is an insignificant extra, that will probably end up being shut down in short order. It's a classic example of being careful what you wish for but disturbing because, like all rich bullies, Microsoft is now pretending that, actually, they meant to do that and rather than feel bad about turning the industry on its head they're just going to carry on and make things worse. And I'm afraid that Sony is now doing the same thing. Given Microsoft is many times their size, Sony should never have had a chance against them, if they were run by competent people. Call me naïve, but if I were Sony and I saw my long-time rival on the ropes I'd give them the old one-two and finish them off for good. As we've seen though they've done the opposite. It almost seems like they're trying to copy Microsoft, except without the infinite funds and not owning two of the biggest publishers in the world. Suddenly, Sony doesn't care for exclusives and they're embracing multiformat releases, even though that makes absolutely no sense for their business. Sure, they will make more money in the short term, but in the long term… there will be no long term if they destroy the whole concept of a video game console. If you want to play Xbox games now you've got two choices: buy a dying console that Xbox aren't even bothering to sell in some countries now or play them on PC or streaming. Microsoft make money out of this, of course, but they have no control over those formats and so they become just like any other publisher, like EA or Ubisoft. There are two basic reasons to buy a console: the lack of fuss and bother (and generally lower price) compared to a PC and the exclusive games. I have long said that Sony releasing their exclusives on PC is a mistake because while you get some short term cash from it you're eating away at the reason anyone would buy a console in the first place. But now we hear that the August release of Helldivers 2 on Xbox Series X/S is not going to be a one-off, that Sony wants to release more games on Xbox and Nintendo Switch. Anything to make the smallest amount of extra money now, even if it means destroying their future forever. Is Sony short of cash or something? Are their financials so bad they have to do the corporate equivalent of going to the pawn shop to make it to the end of the week? Not as far as I know, but that's what they're doing anyway. There seems no point me even complaining at this point, as not only are they obviously not going to listen to me or any other fan but it seems to late. Sony had two choices when Microsoft messed up: go all out to show how good the PlayStation 5 and its line-up of exclusives is or… just sort of roll up and die for no reason. And yes, I know the PlayStation 5 is still selling well but that's because it's the only game in town at the moment, now the Xbox Series X/S has gone to an early grave. But every year the PC becomes more and more popular and that's only going to accelerate as one of the main reasons to buy a console is removed. It's not the end of gaming or anything – third party games will be unaffected – but the sort of exclusive games that Sony used to make are going to become rarer and rarer. They already are but when they don't need them to show off their console, and act like a killer app, they'll just keep reducing the budgets and the number of them they make until they don't bother at all. Spotify age verification checks could see accounts deleted
New laws are now in place that are intended to protect young people on the internet, particularly on sites that have pornographic content. It means that the Online Safety Act could put users accounts at risk of being deleted if they fail to verify their age. Will Spotify require age verification? The music streaming app announced in partnership with Yoti, a digital identity company, that age verification will be carried out via facial recognition or the use of ID documents. Spotify says: 'You may be presented with an age check when you try to access certain age restricted content, like music videos tagged 18+. Some users will be asked to perform an age check when accessing certain age restricted content. 'You can do this by going through our facial age check. If this shows inaccurate results, you can always correct that with an ID verification. 'If you cannot confirm you're old enough to use Spotify, your account will be deactivated and eventually deleted.' How do I confirm my age on Spotify? In the UK, Spotify users must be 13 or over. If the age verification checks confirm the user is under 13, they will have their account deleted. Spotify, which has a staggering 696 million users worldwide, has stressed Yoti will delete users' data once the verification process is complete. What have people said online about the new age checks? Disgruntled Spotify users took to social media to share their thoughts. One said on X: 'The time for quitting Spotify is now. Who's with me?' 'Age verification on Spotify is insane - time to leave,' another said. While a third added: 'Age verification for pornographic material is what it was sold as. 'It's turned into age verification for Spotify, Xbox…it's got nothing to do with protecting children.' Others also felt that now was the time to re-visit old iPods and CDs for music, instead of streaming apps, with one person commenting: 'Age verification on Spotify?!? Time to buy physical music again!' Does Xbox have age restrictions? Xbox have said that they are also 'investing in technologies and tools to ensure players have age-appropriate experiences on their platform', while sending notifications to UK users to verify their age. Via a statement on their website, the gaming brand said that from the beginning of next year, age verification will be required to have 'full access' to the console's social features, such as voice or text communication and game invites.
