Modi's G7 invite by Canada welcomed by industry
Toronto: Canadian industry groups and proponents of a reset in the relationship between Ottawa and New Delhi have welcomed the invitation extended by Prime Minister Mark Carney to his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi to attend the G7 leaders' summit in Alberta this month.
The summit will be held from June 15-17 in Kananaskis, a resort in the province of Alberta. Carney called Modi on Friday to invite him to the global meet which is being chaired by Canada this year.
Among those welcoming the invitation was Goldy Hyder, president and CEO of the Business Council of Canada. He said, 'Suffice to say we're pleased to see the invitation having been sent and accepted. Clear opportunity for a bilateral reset and a framework for next steps as discussions continue in coming months.'
'On the global front, it's important that democracies work in concert at a challenging and uncertain time like this,' Hyder added.
That sentiment was echoed by Victor Thomas, president and CEO of the Canada-India Business Council, as he said, 'At a time of global uncertainty, it is more important than ever for government leaders to engage directly and constructively.
Having Prime Minister Modi back in Canada, and India welcomed to participate at the G7 signals a powerful commitment to shared interests.'
Vina Nadjibulla, vice-president Research and Strategy with the Asia-Pacific Foundation of Canada said inviting Modi was 'not a concession, but a strategic necessity' for 'Canada's own interests, for the credibility of the G7 and for a rules-based order now strained by Moscow, Beijing and Washington.'
'With diplomatic finesse and long-term vision, Canada can both defend its values and strengthen ties with India. A G7 invitation should be only the first step in that process,' she felt.
Canadian Hindu Chamber of Commerce (CHCC) said the visit 'will mark a historic milestone in growing & strengthening Indo-Canadian ties'.
Pro-Khalistan elements have opposed the visit, with the secessionist group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) calling for protests at or near the venue.
World Sikh Organisation (WSO) described the invitation as a 'betrayal.'

"Visit very good, Germany condemned terrorism": Ravi Shankar Prasad
Berlin [Germany], June 7 (ANI): BJP MP and all-party delegation leader Ravi Shankar Prasad on Saturday described the visit to Germany to convey India's resolute and united stand against terrorism highly successful, noting that Germany has condemned terrorism as well as expressed solidarity with India. Following an interaction at a community event in Berlin, Prasad highlighted the enthusiasm of the Indian diaspora inspired by India's growth under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership and emphasised that the delegation's concerns were heard across six countries, with their mission to expose Pakistan-sponsored terrorism gaining traction. 'There is a lot of enthusiasm among Indians in Berlin. They are very inspired by India's growth story and the action taken by the country against terrorists under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi. Our visit to Germany has been very good. Germany has also condemned terrorism. We are very satisfied with the visit. We were given a lot of respect in the six countries we visited, and our concerns were heard, and our stance has been made clear,' Prasad added. Former Union Minister and part of Prasad's delegation, MJ Akbar, underscored PM Modi's leadership in the global fight against terrorism, particularly along religious pretexts. He further expressed optimism about the mission's success, suggesting a positive outlook for India-Germany bilateral ties. 'We hope we have played some part in ensuring that the mission that Prime Minister Modi sent us on has been successful. We have conveyed the message that PM Modi will lead the global fight against barbaric terrorism in the name of religion, and that has risen. The reception in Germany has been the most sympathetic. This also speaks well of the future of our bilateral relations,' he added. BJP MP Daggubati Purandeswari, who is also part of Prasad's delegation, echoed her sentiment, highlighting the delegation's call for close monitoring of IMF funds availed by Pakistan and emphasising the unified global solidarity with India's position. 'We are very happy because we started with a friendly nation, France, and are ending with a friendly nation, Germany. The diaspora has shown a lot of enthusiasm... When we spoke to the governments of different countries, they showed sympathy towards India and are ready to stand with and support us. We emphasised with them that the IMF, which has been availed by Pakistan, needs to be monitored very closely. All the countries have expressed solidarity with India, and they will stand by us,' she stated. The delegation, led by Ravi Shankar Prasad, also includes BJP MP Samik Bhattacharya, Congress MP Amar Singh and Gulam Ali Khatana, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, AIADMK MP M Thambidurai and former diplomat Pankaj Saran. Germany has come out very strongly in endorsing India's position on fight against terrorism: Ambassador Ajit Gupte
Berlin [Germany], June 7 (ANI): India's Ambassador to Germany, Ajit Gupte, expressed strong optimism regarding the visit of an all-party delegation led by BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad, calling it a significant step in strengthening ties between the two countries. Speaking to ANI, Ambassador Gupte highlighted the support for India from the highest echelons of German society and the depth of the bilateral partnership. 'It has been a privilege for us to receive the delegation led by Ravi Shankar Prasad. We have had a number of meetings today. He met, in the morning, the Vice President of the Bundestag, Omid Nouripour. Then he met a group of MPs, including Armin Laschet, the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, and Ralph Brinkhaus, who has been the Chairman of the India-Germany Parliamentary Friendship Group. Later, we had a meeting with the Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul,' Gupte said. 'In all these meetings, senior representatives reiterated their support for India's fight against terrorism, and they expressed solidarity. Foreign Minister has earlier said that India has the right to defend itself against terrorist attacks and in fact, Mr Nouripour went on to say that no country has suffered as much from terrorism as India has...' he added. Gupte noted that the delegation also held a luncheon interaction with several German MPs representing diverse political ideologies. 'Germany has come out very strongly in terms of endorsing India's position on the fight against terrorism, and we are deeply grateful for the solidarity that has been shown by German political leaders across the political mainstream because we met representatives and MPs from different political parties,' he said. Highlighting the strength of the Indo-German partnership, Gupte said, 'Germany and India are democracies, we share common values. Germany is our valued and trusted partner. Our trade and investment relationship with Germany is very strong, and it should be noted that India-Germany bilateral trade has exceeded 50 billion US Dollars, and this is more than 25% of India's trade with the EU.' He also noted that 2025 marks the 25th anniversary of the India-Germany Strategic Partnership, established in 2000. 'We have a regular format of consultations at the highest level, inter-governmental consultations and there are many mechanisms in place. We are seeking to develop the multi-faceted strategic partnership and explore new areas of cooperation and very shortly after the new government was sworn, headed by Chancellor MeRz, our EAM paid a visit to Germany from 22nd to 24th of May. It was a very successful visit,' he said. Later speaking at the interaction event with the diaspora, he said, 'Yesterday, we had very constructive meetings with the German leadership, including the Foreign Minister, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs leaders across the political spectrum in Germany expressed solidarity with us.' There is a desire in India to strengthen its relations with Germany, with whom we share a strategic partnership. This year, we are celebrating the 25th anniversary of this strategic partnership. Earlier, Ravi Shankar Prasad said they raised strong concerns about terrorism during their visit to Brussels and generals of Pakistan 'run that country with the help of a military terrorist coalition', which is a 'threat' to democracy and humanity. This diplomatic effort forms part of India's global outreach following Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7 in response to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam by Pakistan-sponsored militants that claimed 26 lives and injured several others. Subsequently, the Indian Armed Forces carried out targeted strikes against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the deaths of over 100 terrorists linked to groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen. J-K: A month after Operation Sindoor, residents in Samba return to work; situation calm on border
Samba (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 7 (ANI): As a month has gone by since 'Operation Sindoor', residents in Samba expressed faith in the Indian Army and said that the situation was peaceful at present and people have returned to work. A resident in Samba said, 'We are living 2 km away from the border. We have faced severe losses, and parts of drone entered our kitchen. Our windows were shattered. Now there is peace. Earlier, we were extremely frightened. PM Modi has provided a lot of benefits. He has announced the formation of new border battalions for Jammu and Kashmir. Earlier, there was continuous shelling. We will be extremely relieved once PM Modi provides us with bunkers.' He further said that they had full confidence in the Indian Army and all the drones were neutralised. 'Now the people have started working in the fields again. There is no fear,' he added. Another resident living 3 km away from the border said that the situation is now very peaceful. 'The Indian Army and BSF had destroyed the drones in the air. Now, development work is in progress. People have started working in fields,' he added. Another resident said that the terrorists' launch pad should also be dismantled in future. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that Pakistan 'saw its doomsday' on the night of May 6 during Operation Sindoor, a deep strike mission that he said left the Pakistan Army and terrorists stunned. Addressing a public gathering in J-K's Reasi, PM Modi said, 'Remember, exactly one month ago, on the night of May 6, Pakistan saw its doomsday. Now, whenever Pakistan hears the name of Operation Sindoor, it will remember its shameful defeat. The Pakistani Army and terrorists had never thought that India would attack terrorists hundreds of kilometres inside Pakistan in such a way.' He said Operation Sindoor demonstrated the strength of Aatmnirbhar Bharat and praised the armed forces for their trust in 'Make in India.' 'You have seen how Operation Sindoor has shown the power of Aatmnirbhar Bharat. Today, the world is discussing India's defence ecosystem. There is only one reason behind this. Our army's trust in Make in India. Every Indian has to repeat what the army has done,' he said. He also urged the youth of Jammu and Kashmir to actively participate in Mission Manufacturing, announced in this year's Budget. 'I want to ask the youth of Jammu and Kashmir to join this mission. Your ideas and skills will take India's economy and security to new heights,' he said. The Prime Minister also announced financial assistance for families affected by border shelling. He said houses fully damaged by cross-border shelling would receive Rs 2 lakh, while partially damaged houses would be given Rs 1 lakh. 'The suffering of more than 2,000 families affected by shelling is also our own suffering. Now, those houses which have suffered heavy damage will be given Rs 2 lakh, and those partially damaged will receive Rs 1 lakh more,' he said. (ANI)
