Hernan Lopez, a former executive with 21st Century Fox, and marketing firm Full Play, had been acquitted on appeal following their conviction in 2023 after a judge cited precedent from a US Supreme Court ruling.
However an appeals court in New York on Wednesday found that the decision to acquit on appeal had been erroneous, citing a misreading of the law surrounding federal wire fraud.
"We hold that the district court erred in concluding that defendants' conduct did not fall within the scope of Statute 1346," a ruling said.
"Therefore, we vacate the district court's judgments," the Second Circuit Court of Appeals ruled, remanding the case for "further proceedings pursuant to this opinion".
Lopez and Full Play's case was was one of several to emerge from the 2015 probe from the US Justice Department which rocked world soccer's governing body FIFA and continental confederations for South and North America.
The US investigation, which included raids on FIFA officials in Zurich, led to a series of arrests and trails and subsequent charges, convictions and guilty pleas.
Lopez and Full Play were found guilty on charges of wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy in March 2023.
Lopez faced up to 40 years in prison and millions of dollars in penalties. Full Play was expected to face millions of dollars in fines.
Before the convictions of Lopez and Full Play, the court had heard that the main beneficiaries of the kickback scheme were six of the most powerful men in South American football.
They included former CONMEBOL president Nicolas Leoz, who died in 2019, former Argentine football executive Julio Grondona, who died in 2014, and former Brazilian football chief Ricardo Teixeira.

'Pele Of Palestine' Killed By Israeli Fire While Waiting To Receive Food In Gaza

Last Updated: Palestinian footballer Suleiman Al Obaid, known as the "Pele of Palestine," was killed by Israeli fire in Gaza while waiting for aid. He earned 19 caps and scored over 100 goals. Former Palestinian international footballer Suleiman Al Obaid has been killed by Israeli fire in southern Gaza while reportedly waiting in line for humanitarian aid, according to the Palestinian Football Association (PFA). The 41-year-old was queuing at an aid distribution centre in Rafah on Wednesday when he was fatally shot, the association confirmed. The former Palestine national team player, Suleiman Al-Obaid, was killed in an Israeli strike targeting civilians waiting for humanitarian aid in the southern Gaza Strip. — Palestine Football Association (@Palestine_fa) August 6, 2025 Al Obaid was one of the most celebrated footballers to emerge from the Gaza Strip, widely known as the 'Pele of Palestine," a tribute to the legendary Brazilian forward. His death marks yet another grim milestone in the ongoing conflict. According to the PFA, he is the 662nd member of Gaza's sporting community to be killed since the war began in October 2023. Al Obaid's international career Al Obaid earned 19 caps for the Palestinian national team and scored two international goals — one against Yemen in 2010 and another in a friendly against Indonesia in 2011. He made his national debut against Iraq during the 2007 West Asian Championship and represented Palestine in major tournaments including the Asian Cup, Pan Arab Games, and FIFA World Cup qualifiers. His last appearance for the national team came in 2013 against Qatar. Domestically, he played for clubs including Khidmat Al Shatia, Shabab Al Amari, and Gaza Sport, excelling in multiple attacking roles — from centre forward to right winger. Between 2016 and 2018, he claimed the Golden Boot in the Gaza Strip Premier League for three consecutive seasons, scoring more than 100 goals across his career. 'During his long career, Al Obaid scored more than 100 goals, making him one of the brightest stars of Palestinian football," the PFA said in a statement mourning his death. The war's toll on Palestinian athletes Al Obaid is the third national team player confirmed to have been killed since the start of the war, following the deaths of Mouyin Al-Maghribi and Mohammed Barakat earlier this year. The targeting of athletes has raised alarm among sporting bodies. The Palestine Olympic Committee (POC) reported that at least 13 athletes and coaches were killed by Israeli strikes or ground incursions in July 2025 alone. A separate statement from the POC on July 29 said that 40 Palestinian athletes had been killed that month. 'With each passing day, new chapters of the Palestinian sports tragedy unfold," the committee said. 'These athletes are not killed on battlefields; they are assassinated while running after their children or searching for water and medicine. This war of starvation now hunts athletes, just as it does doctors and civilians." In Gaza, where football often offers rare moments of joy and unity amid hardship, Al Obaid's legacy will endure long after the final whistle. view comments Location : New Delhi, India, India First Published: August 07, 2025, 19:57 IST News sports » football 'Pele Of Palestine' Killed By Israeli Fire While Waiting To Receive Food In Gaza Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. The object did not directly reach the court, but hit a man who came to watch the WNBA match with his 9-year-old niece. The person, later revealed to be Kaden Lopez, 18, was arrested for this barbaric incident. What's even more surprising was when this person was interviewed. Although he had apologized for this inhumane behavior, however, he made sure to address the media with something that sparked heated debate among everyone out there. He referred to this incident as a 'stupid prank', which had created discontent among the audience and the people of the league. Kaden Lopez had been arrested for allegedly throwing a d**do at a WNBA Game This is not the first time that a s*x object has been thrown, aimed at the courtside at a WNBA game. It's also dangerous, and you know, player safety is No. 1, respecting the game, all those things. I think it's really stupid." A similar incident had taken place during the Valkyries-Dream game On July 29, the first incident had taken place, whereby a person allegedly threw a green d**do on the courtside. The game was immediately stopped, following a tough speculation. The object was removed instantly, and the game was resumed. Request To Recuse Judges In New Diego Maradona Trial Denied

The request was denied, as the judges found the grounds of the request to be merely speculative and conjectural. The request by the defence to recuse two of the judges appointed for the trial of the medical team of the late Diego Maradona over the Argentine legend's death was rejected on Wednesday. Advocates of Maradona's personal physician, Leopoldo Luque, who is among seven people charged with culpable homicide over the World Cup-winner's passing, had requested for two members of the judicial panel to be removed from the case, over a fear of partiality. The request was denied, as the judges found the grounds of the request to be merely speculative and conjectural. The first trial into Maradona's 2020 death collapsed in May after one of the judges was sensationally revealed to have taken part in a clandestine documentary about the trial. A new three-judge bench was appointed in July to conduct a fresh trial. No date has yet been set for the new trial. Maradona was the star man of the Argentine side that clinched the FIFA World Cup in the year 1986 as the icon from Dique Lujan etched his name in history books with his astounding showings that made the world acknowledge his magical abilities on the ball. Maradona, regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, passed away in November 2020 at the age of 60 while recovering from brain surgery. He died from heart failure and acute pulmonary edema, a condition where fluid builds up in the lungs, a few weeks after the medical procedure. His medical team faced trial over the conditions of his home recovery, which prosecutors described as grossly negligent. They could face prison sentences ranging from eight to 25 years if convicted of homicide with possible intent or for pursuing a course of action despite knowing it could lead to his death. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
