Brian Lara Calls Jasprit Bumrah A 'GOAT', Puts Rohit Sharma A Tier Below At...
Brian Lara considers Jasprit Bumrah worthy of GOAT status alongside Glenn McGrath, Adam Gilchrist, and Jacques Kallis. He put Rohit Sharma a tier below.
West Indies great Brian Lara has labeled Jasprit Bumrah as a talent worthy of the GOAT — Greatest of all time — status, alongside Australians Glenn McGrath and Adam Gilchrist and South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis. He put another four names in a tier below, 'Legend': former England captain Kevin Pietersen, Pakistan pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi, New Zealand batter Kane Williamson and India ODI skipper Rohit Sharma.
In an interview with Stick To Cricket, Lara was given these nine names and asked to put them in the tier list with 'GOAT' as the highest, 'Legend' as the second, and 'Great' as the third. Lara didn't put anyone in the third level.
Bumrah made his international debut in 2016 and has since risen through the ranks to become arguably the best all-format bowler in the world. In Tests, he is the only one with over 200 wickets (213) at a sub-20 average, has already led India to a T20 World Cup title (2024) and the Mumbai Indians to several IPL trophies, while also putting many world-beating performances in ODIs (overall 149 wickets at a staggering 23.55).
Meanwhile, Rohit has retired from both T20Is and Tests. He has a rich legacy across formats, too: in Tests as someone who transformed his game from a middle-order underwhelming star to one of the best openers in the fag end of his career, in ODIs as a Champions Trophy-winning captain and one of the greatest openers of all time and in T20Is as a World Cup-winning skipper.
Will Jasprit Bumrah play the third Test in Manchester?
All eyes are on Bumrah in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. India are trailing the series 2-1 and will play at Manchester in the fourth Test. They would not want to leave out their best bowler in Jasprit Bumrah but given his workload concerns, playing him here might mean dropping him for the final game.
'We'll make that call in Manchester still," India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said about that subject recently. 'We know we've got him for one of the last two Tests. I think it's pretty obvious the series is on the line in Manchester, so there will be a leaning towards playing him. But again, we've look at all the factors, how many days of cricket are we going to get up there? What do we feel is our best chance of winning that game? And then how that fits in together with the Oval, and looking at the last two games holistically as part of the series."
The Test starts on July 23.

The stars of Indian golf excited about upcoming league
Three of the best golfers in the country who have shared rooms on the professional tour, Shiv Kapur, Gaurav Ghei and SSP Chawrasia, and pride about having more than 100 years of combined experience between them, were excited about the forthcoming Indian Golf Premier League (IGPL). In an interaction with the media, the three observed that golf in its new avatar, 'with no cut, decent prize money, fast-paced action', would attract the young talent to the game and help them grow into superstars. 'This league, combined with men, women, amateurs and juniors, will do what IPL has done for cricket. It will help promote the nextgen players,' said Shiv Kapur. Chawrasia felt that it would be a win-win situation both for the experienced players and the youngsters as both would learn from each other in dealing with the new format. Gaurav Ghei pointed out that Europe and USA had tried different formats over the years, but they were one-off events. 'To have a Tour, followed by the league in a short, concise format is exciting. It will engage youngsters and bring new viewership to the game,' said Ghei. The star professionals were unanimous that young fans did not have the patience to watch golf for long hours, and the quick format would provide the 'excitement for the fan.' Shiv was confident that Indian golf would look up once again and there was no reason why an Indian can't win a Major or be world No.1 in the times ahead. The professionals were equally unanimous that the team event would foster camaraderie and energise players to pull their weight for the team. The IGPL would also mean more opportunities for players to compete through the year. It would mean access to golf for more aspirants, giving the chance for players to represent teams and be seen on television. Shiv said that he was keen to be fully involved as a mentor and leader in building a franchise, the team, and experience the joy of sharing. 'The pressure while playing for a team is a lot different. When Karthik Singh plays Gaganjeet Bhullar, it will be a learning experience for both players,' said Gaurav.

From hospital bed to EURO 2025 hero: Aitana Bonmati back to her decisive best for Spain
'You could write a book about this,' said Aitana Bonmati on Wednesday as she reflected on the last few weeks in her life after scoring the goal which took Spain into the final of the Women's Euro 2025. At the end of June the world's leading women's footballer was lying in hospital with viral meningitis and it looked like she might not be able to play for Spain at the tournament in Switzerland. Now she is preparing to lead her team into Sunday's final against England in Basel, in a rematch of the 2023 World Cup decider which Spain won, after converting the only goal of the last-four clash with Germany late in extra time. 'When the ball went in I started running around like a crazy person. I didn't know where to go,' a smiling Bonmati said as she spoke to media at the Letzigrund Stadium in Zurich after collecting the trophy for player of the match. Barcelona midfielder Bonmati, who has won the Ballon d'Or in each of the last two years, was taken into hospital at the end of June after reporting feeling unwell. Tests confirmed that she was suffering from a bout of viral meningitis and Bonmati could only watch from bed as her teammates beat Japan in a friendly. Viral meningitis is less serious than the rarer bacterial variant, which can lead to death within 24 hours, but it still seemed like a long shot for her to recover in time for the Euros. Growing rivalry Yet she did recover, and appeared as a late substitute in Spain's opening game at the tournament, a 5-0 win over Portugal in Bern on July 3. The 27-year-old was back in the starting line-up for Spain's final group match, a 3-1 victory over Italy, and retained her place for the quarter-final against the host nation before scoring the winner against Germany. 'I don't believe in destiny, just in hard work and in my own mentality. I can only thank everyone who has supported me because it has not been easy,' Bonmati admitted. 'She didn't have an easy start to the Euros but she has managed to overcome her health problems and has worked hard to get fit again,' remarked coach Montse Tome. Spain is now into its first-ever senior women's European Championship final, two years after winning the World Cup for the first time. Bonmati was one of the stars of that superb team which defeated England in Sydney, and is now dreaming of another title. As well as the 2023 Women's World Cup final, Spain beat England in the final of the men's Euros last year in Berlin. In late May an Arsenal side featuring several members of Sarina Wiegman's current England squad defeated Barcelona in the final of the Women's Champions League. Seven of the players who started for Barcelona that day in Lisbon also started against Germany on Wednesday, among them goalkeeper Cata Coll who made several vital saves before Bonmati got the winner. 'Cata played really well, with some big saves when we were suffering,' Bonmati said of Coll, who missed all of Spain's three group games due to tonsilitis. 'Neither of us had the start we wanted at this Euros due to illness but we are lucky to be here today. 'It shows what can happen in life. In the end we have had good news.'

Cash Crunch Threatens Pakistan Hockey Team's FIH Pro League Participation
Last Updated: The Pakistan hockey team's participation in the 2025-26 FIH Pro League is uncertain due to financial issues, needing 700 million rupees from Pakistan Sports Board. The Pakistan hockey team's participation in the 2025-26 FIH Pro League is in jeopardy due to a financial crisis, potentially derailing the three-time Olympic champions' anticipated comeback on the international stage. The Pakistan men's hockey team, which has won the World Cup four times, has been invited to compete in the FIH Pro League 2025-26 after New Zealand, who had earned direct qualification by winning the 2024-25 Nations Cup, decided not to participate in the upcoming season. The International Hockey Federation (FIH), the game's governing body, formally extended the invitation to Pakistan on Wednesday and gave them a deadline until August 12 to confirm their participation. Pakistan, which has failed to qualify for the last three Olympics and the World Cup, has been given an opportunity by the FIH to compete against top-tier teams Argentina, Australia, Belgium, England, Germany, India, Netherlands, and Spain in the competition that will be held from December 2025 to June 2026. However, the cash-strapped Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) lacks the funds to send the team to the Pro League. The PHF has requested the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) to release 700 million rupees (around USD 2.5 million) for the entire campaign. In its recent annual meeting, the state-run PSB made it clear that it doesn't have the funds to ensure Pakistan's participation in the Pro League. The PSB has directed the PHF to submit detailed accounts of the funds allocated to them since last year and has refused to release more funds to the national federation to cover daily and travel allowances of players and officials who attended the recent FIH Nations Cup. Pakistan lost in the final of the FIH Nations Cup to New Zealand, who automatically qualified for the Pro League. However, New Zealand has informed the FIH that they wouldn't be sending their team, giving second-best Pakistan a chance to compete against the top-tier teams. An official in the PSB stated that the PSB would send a summary to the Prime Minister for the allocation of special funds to allow the PHF to send the team to the Pro League. However, due to the PHF's failure to update the PSB on how they spent funds released to them since last year, the Prime Minister, who is the patron-in-chief of the PHF, might opt for a change in the top leadership of the federation before approving special funds of 700 million rupees. Rasheedul Hassan, an Olympic gold medallist who has launched a campaign against the PHF, said that unfortunately, the officials managing the federation's affairs for the past years had failed to maintain a clean image. When the inaugural Pro League was held, the PHF initially confirmed participation but later backed out citing lack of funds, resulting in a fine of 170,000 euros to the FIH. For the record, Pakistan is the most successful national team in Asian Games history, with eight gold medals (1958, 1962, 1970, 1974, 1978, 1982, 1990, and 2010), the highest number of times a country has become Asian Champion. Pakistan is also the only Asian team to have won the prestigious Champions Trophy thrice (1978, 1980, and 1994). Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
