Edinburgh Princes Street Gardens cafe targeted by 'youth gang' for third time in a week
An Edinburgh Princes Street cafe has been targeted by a gang of youths for the third time in a week after nearby business owners warned they are 'under siege' from feral groups.
Last weekend a firework was let off near customers at Sir Walter's Cafe in the Gardens, exploding near women and young children. Just days later, two female youths were captured breaking open a shutter and raiding the cafe.
Paulius Bernotas, who owns the business in Princes Street Gardens, raised concerns over an increase in antisocial behaviour from large groups of youths in the area and called on police to carry out regular patrols to deter further offending.
On Thursday, July 3, several male youths appeared to approach the cafe shortly before midnight and attempted to prize open the same shutter before turning the camera away from them.
According to Paulius, more damage was dealt to the unit, but nothing appears to have been taken.

A hand is then visible as the camera is moved away from them while they allegedly broke the doors open.
After being approached about a rise in youth-related incidents within Princes Street Gardens, Sergeant Robert Richardson said officers are currently running a dedicated initiative which involves high-visibility patrols specifically targeting antisocial behaviour on Princes Street and the surrounding area.
Paulius previously told how groups regularly make their way around Princes Street Gardens with speakers during the day and approach his cafe and seating area in the afternoon.
Despite being asked to leave by staff, groups continue to 'look for a reaction' and vandalise his cafe. The raid on the unit earlier this week left Paulius with a bill of around £2,000 to repair damage caused to the shutter and a fridge.
Sergeant Robert Richardson said: "We understand the impact anti-social behaviour and disorder has on the local community, and I would like to thank locals who continue to bring these incidents to our attention. I would reassure them that everything possible is being done to reduce anti-social behaviour in our area.

'Officers are currently running a dedicated initiative named Operation Verbeia, which involves increased high-visibility patrols specifically targeting anti-social behaviour in the Princes Street area and its surroundings.
"We take reports of such instances very seriously and I would urge anyone who comes across disorder to contact police. Anti-social behaviour and criminal acts will not be tolerated and those found to be committing these offences will be dealt with appropriately.
'Anyone with any concerns is encouraged to report incidents to police on 101 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.'

Scottish dad who killed his own children in 'revenge plot' against wife denied parole

More info Killer Rab Thomson, who killed his own to children in their family home after his marriage broke down, has been denied parole. The sick dad stabbed his disabled daughter Michelle, who was 25-years-old at the time, and his seven-year-old son Ryan, to death. The 67-year-old was sentenced to 17 years in prison for the crimes, which he committed in 2008. His former wife, June, plead with the parole board to deny him his freedom. Her calls were echoed by others in the community, with MP for Glenrothes and Mid Fife Richard Baker now confirming he has not been given parole after writing to the authorities. He said: "Rab Thomson, who killed his son, seven, and disabled daughter in Buckhaven in 2008, has been denied parole. "My wife, Claire Baker MSP and I, who wrote to the board seeking this outcome, welcome the decision. I'm sure many people in Levenmouth will feel the same." Thomson is believed to have murdered his children out of cruel revenge on his estranged wife June who left him after 27-years of beatings and rape. In his first official access visit, after June finally plucked up the courage to leave him, he stabbed Ryan 14 times as the little boy played a computer game at the family home in Buckhaven, Fife, on May 3, 2008. He then turned the knife on Michelle, stabbing her 12 times as she fought for her life, leaving her bedroom like a bloodbath. After murdering his children, Thomson placed each child in bed and posed their bodies like little angels for his wife to find. Detective Inspector Graham Fenton, one of the detectives in charge of the investigation, said the killer traumatised his family for years. He previously said: "June had been the victim of emotional, physical and sexual abuse. Dr Nixon said: "He wanted to present a perfect life to the outside world. "He liked to be respected, he liked to be admired. His wife leaving him was not part of that image. Because he was losing everything, his way of dealing with it was to destroy it."

Two rushed to hospital as Midlothian road closed due to 'street brawl' outside bar

More info Two men have been rushed to hospital after a 'brawl' broke out on a busy Midlothian street which saw the road closed off. Emergency services descended on Penicuik's John Street shortly after 1am on Sunday, July 6, following a report of a disturbance, as Lothian bus services were diverted from the area. One eye witness told Edinburgh Live how at least two people were seen lying on the road as a "huge" police response and multiple ambulances were spotted at the scene. They said: "Large brawl outside Cuikoo bar Penicuik Main Street around 1.30/1.45am. At least two left lying on road injured. Massive police response. Unsure how many conveyed to hospital. "Road still closed at this time. Main street at junction with Carlops Road is where closure starts heading to towards town centre." A second person took to X to warn motorists the road was closed shortly after 2am. They added: "Dunno if anybody is near Penicuik but main street is closed, no one getting past. Three ambulances, four police, people all over the road. Hope everyone is ok." Police have since confirmed a 45-year-old man and a 50-year-old man were taken to hospital and further inquiries are ongoing.
