Randy Arozarena hits career milestone with HR vs. Royals

When the Seattle Mariners hit a milestone home run in 2025, thoughts immediately turn to Cal Raleigh. The Gold Glove catcher leads the majors with 32 homers this season. But in Monday's matchup against the Kansas City Royals, Randy Arozarena grabbed the spotlight.
The All-Star outfielder left the yard in the fourth inning, hitting his 100th career home run, per MLB.
Arozarena jumped on the first pitch of the at-bat, blasting a Michael Wacha cutter 395 feet to right center. It was his ninth homer of the season and the 100th of his seven-year career.
But Arozarena wasn't done yet. He added to his impressive career total the following inning, crushing a 94 mph four-seamer 401 feet to center. The three-run bomb gave the Mariners a 5-1 lead over Kansas City.
Randy Arozarena reaches 100 home runs in multi-homer game for Mariners
Seattle acquired Arozarena in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays at the deadline last season. The team had hoped the addition would spark the Mariners' struggling offense and help with a second-half playoff push. That didn't materialize as Seattle missed the postseason for the second straight year.
Arozarena hasn't put up eye-popping stats with the Mariners. But with his two-homer game, he's now on pace for his fourth consecutive 20/20 season as he's up to 10 home runs and 15 stolen bases in 2025. He entered Monday's contest slashing .244/.358/.416 with a 122 OPS+ and 2.7 bWAR in 81 games.
While Arozarena has contributed solid stats, the Mariners' offense in 2025 revolves around their switch-hitting catcher. Raleigh joined elite company with his power surge in the first half of the season. He leads the majors in home runs and RBI while adding Gold Glove-caliber defense behind the plate.
However, Seattle's pitching has been a disappointment this year. While the rotation was the team's biggest strength in 2024, several key starters have dealt with injuries this season.
The Mariners did get a strong outing from George Kirby on Monday. He allowed one run on three hits with five strikeouts over six innings of work. The fourth-year veteran was an All-Star and Cy Young candidate in his breakout 2023 campaign and turned in another strong performance last year. But Kirby began the 2025 season on the injured list with shoulder inflammation and didn't make his debut until May 22.
The Mariners have gone 10-6 over the last 16 games heading into the series opener against the Royals. However, the Houston Astros have once again taken control of the AL West, building a 6.5 game lead over Seattle in the division.

Shedeur Sanders to get the start in Browns preseason opener

The Cleveland Browns continue to spin the quarterback carousel throughout training camp, and the spinning wheel has stopped on Shedeur Sanders as the starting quarterback for Cleveland's first preseason game. The Browns announced that Sanders, the team's fifth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, will get the start against the Carolina Panthers. Cleveland's first preseason game comes Friday night in Charlotte, and Sanders will be under center, according to Mary Kay Cabot of Injuries within the Browns crowded quarterback room helped make the decision to start Sanders an easier one. Veteran Kenny Pickett and third-round rookie Dillon Gabriel are both sidelined with hamstring injuries, leaving just Sanders and presumptive starter Joe Flacco. To that end, the Browns signed veteran Tyler Huntley to serve as Sanders' relief in the game, as Flacco is not expected to suit up as a 40-year-old vet. Sanders has not taken any first-team snaps through Tuesday's practice session, but he'll get the starting nod after a joint practice session with the Panthers. Shedeur Sanders expected to start for Browns in Week 1 preseason game

Cleveland Browns fans will get their first look at 2025 fifth-round pick Shedeur Sanders in live game action, projected to start at quarterback in the team's Week 1 preseason game against the Carolina Panthers, Mary Kay Cabot reported Tuesday. Sanders finds himself in line for the start amidst injuries to fellow rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel and Kenny Pickett, who's heading into his fourth NFL season. Veteran Joe Flacco was recently listed as the team's intended starter for the 2025 season on the Browns' initial depth chart, with Pickett listed as the backup, followed by Gabriel at No. 3 and Sanders last on the depth chart at No. 4. The Browns' quarterback saga was one of the most-discussed stories of the offseason as Flacco, Pickett, Gabriel and Sanders all competed for the starting spot left by DeShaun Watson, who is expected to miss the season due to an Achilles injury. Although Sanders did not get many reps with the first team during camp, he stayed positive throughout the process. The former Colorado signal caller noted how the lack of repetitions did not affect his work ethic. "That's not my place to answer," Sanders told reporters Friday, via ESPN's Daniel Oyefusi. "I feel like it's not in my control, so I'm not even gonna think about that or have that even in my thought process." "There's a lot of people that wanna have the opportunity to be at this level, and I'm here, and I'm thankful to have the opportunity, so, whatever that is it is," Sanders added. "It doesn't really faze me. You gotta understand, we came all the way from an HBCU to a Power 5 [conference team], and now we here, so," he continued. "At this point, you look around, there's nothing that's a challenge, I would say." Sanders also had an impressive showing in Day 4 of camp, throwing three touchdowns during the workout, including this one to fellow rookie Luke Floriea. Cleveland will play three preseason games, starting with a game with the Panthers, with matchups against the Philadelphia Eagles and the LA Rams scheduled for mid and late August to follow. They will begin their regular season against the Cincinnati Bengals at home on September 7.

Where Penn State ranks in CBS Sports writer's preseason ranking

The preseason US LBM Coaches Poll is out, and soon enough, the media poll, the AP Top 25, will be hitting the wire as well. The coaches poll fulfilled the offseason hype for Penn State by placing the Nittany Lions at no. 3 in the nation with 14 first-place votes cast in their favor. Penn State has been a trendy pick this offseason with a roster loaded and primed to take another step forward this fall. Adding fuel to the hype train is the first look at the ranking of every FBS team served up by CBS Sports. Chip Patterson of CBS Sports takes on the duty of ranking all 136 FBS programs throughout the season (USA TODAY Sports will have a similar ranking as well), and he is echoing the praise of so many for Penn State this offseason with his preseason rankings. Patterson ranks Penn State at no. 2 in his preseason ranking of every FBS program, with only the Texas Longhorns coming in ahead of Drew Allar, Nicholas Singleton, Zane Durant, and the rest of the Nittany Lions. Penn State is one spot ahead of Ohio State in this particular ranking, for whatever that is worth. Penn State finished the 2024 season ranked fifth in Patterson's ranking. Texas finished at no. 4 and Ohio State, Notre Dame, and Oregon all took the top three spots, respectively. Penn State's only losses in the 2024 season came against Ohio State (regular season), Oregon (Big Ten championship game), and Notre Dame (College Football Playoff semifinal in the Orange Bowl). In addition to Penn State and Ohio State, other Big Ten teams ranked in the top 15 by Patterson include Oregon (no. 7), Illinois (no. 13), and Michigan (no. 15).
