The video shared on Instagram on April 18 shows approximately 20 white fish fillets hanging on a clothesline in a shared backyard area. The location was identified as being associated with
BBQ Noodle House
on New North Road, based on signage visible in the footage.
Alice Lau, manager of BBQ Noodle House, firmly denied any connection to the fish, stating that the area is a communal space shared with residents living above the restaurant. "That is confirmed that that fish is for the resident, nothing used for the consumer or any customers," Lau told RNZ. She added that the tenant responsible had apologized and assured that it would not happen again.

's food safety officer visited the restaurant on April 23 and downgraded the restaurant's food hygiene rating from an A to a D. An improvement notice was issued, prohibiting the drying of fish or any other food outside the premises.
Lau expressed her concern over the impact of the incident on the restaurant's reputation. She said that regular customers had begun questioning the restaurant's hygiene, causing reputational damage. She also highlighted the cultural aspect of drying food, explaining that while the restaurant uses canned salted fish imported from overseas in some dishes, it does not practice outdoor drying.

She explained that it's a traditional practice that has been used for centuries in China. Different communities have developed their methods of preserving and preparing it.
"In ancient times, people dried meat to preserve it because they didn't have refrigerators," she said.
"They dried vegetables too. When they wanted to use them, they'd soak the dried food in water, then cook it in dishes like dumplings or buns, or stir-fry it with meat. It's just like using fresh ingredients, but with a different flavor."
Under Auckland Council's Food Safety Information Bylaw 2020, food businesses are required to adhere to strict hygiene standards and display their food grade certificates prominently. The bylaw aims to promote high food safety standards across the region.
The restaurant has been given a fortnight to address the issues before a follow-up inspection.

Gujarat's tree cover records 17% decline over six years
Ahmedabad: Gujarat's tree cover has recorded a stark 17% decline over six years, falling from 8,034sq km in 2015-16 to 6,632sq km in 2021-22, in sharp contrast to other industrialised states, most of which reported substantial gains in the same period. According to data presented in a Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI) report, Maharashtra led the growth with a 47.7% growth in tree cover — from 9,831sq km to 14,525sq km. Andhra Pradesh recorded a 42.3% expansion, Karnataka recorded a 36.1% increase, while Telangana, Haryana and Tamil Nadu saw their tree cover grow by 31.8%, 19.6% and 15% respectively. All these states have substantially industrialised. A senior forest official from Gujarat revealed the state's tree cover has experienced a long-term decline — shrinking from 8,358sq km in 2013 to 6,632.29 sq km, as per the latest Forest Survey of India (FSI) 2023 report, marking a 20.65% decrease over seven years. "We registered the highest increase in tree cover in the FSI 2023 report compared to the FSI 2021 report. Gujarat's tree cover currently stands at 3.38% of its geographical area, up from 2.8% earlier," said A P Singh, principal chief conservator of forests. In fact, Ahmedabad City, he added, has been the biggest loser of green cover among major cities in Gujarat since 2011. Environment experts blame it on rapid urbanisation and industrialisation. Environmentalists attribute the loss to rapid urbanisation and unchecked industrial growth. "The pace of industrialisation in Gujarat has been extremely rapid in recent years," said Mahesh Pandya, environmental engineer and director of Paryavaran Mitra. "As a result, forest land was often diverted for industrial use. Replantation and greening efforts haven't kept up with the pace of loss. Though we saw some recovery from 2021 to 2023, earlier gaps caused lasting depletion. What is urgently needed is focused, long-term intervention from the govt, complemented by community participation." Pandya also flagged future risks tied to ecological degradation. "Our mangrove belts are not dense enough to provide strong natural barriers. While survival rates of plantations improved, earlier negligence left coastal areas vulnerable. In the event of cyclones, the impact on the land side could be severe, with increased risk of salinity ingress," he warned. Experts flag indiscriminate vegetation removal along Vishwamitri
Vadodara: The group of experts appointed by the Gujarat State Human Rights Commission (GSHRC) to monitor the Vishwamitri river project has raised concerns over the indiscriminate removal of vegetation along the riverbanks. The group also noted that a comprehensive plantation plan for the river is yet to be developed. In its recent report submitted to the commission, the committee shared observations based on field visits, meetings with officials, and information provided by the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) and other stakeholders. The report highlighted issues related to vegetation loss and riverbank stabilisation. It pointed out that vegetation had been unnecessarily removed from several areas along the riverbanks, even where there were no signs of debris or solid waste. This removal has resulted in steep to vertical slopes, making the banks vulnerable to erosion during the monsoon season. The report further noted that the clearing was carried out despite prior recommendations against disturbing such areas. A supplementary report later submitted by the group emphasized that several stretches on the eastern banks of the river had healthy vegetation and no visible debris. The experts also noted the ecological importance of emergent and floating vegetation in the river, particularly for crocodile hatchlings. They advised that such vegetation should not be removed. The report added that biodiversity-rich islands have emerged in the river as a result of ongoing work and should be preserved. A high-level committee appointed by the state govt for flood mitigation in the city had earlier suggested initiating plantation efforts along the river. The GSHRC-appointed group echoed this recommendation but pointed out that, despite repeated suggestions, a scientifically designed plantation plan has yet to be prepared. The report recommended engaging an ecological consultant to develop, implement, and monitor such a plan in a systematic and scientific manner.
