Cashier hands man wrong lottery ticket – and now he's a millionaire in Michigan

Miami Herald21-04-2025

A Michigan man became a millionaire after a store clerk handed him the wrong lottery ticket.
The 45-year-old man went to Speedway in Paw Paw to buy a lottery ticket, according to an April 21 news release from the Michigan Lottery.
He said he only plays Cashword games occasionally and it was 'totally a fluke' that the cashier gave him one.
'I asked the cashier for a different game, and she mistakenly handed me this Major Cashword ticket instead. When she realized she gave me the wrong ticket, she offered to give me the game I'd asked for, but I told her I would just keep the Major Cashword ticket instead,' he said.
The man waited until the next morning to scratch the barcode on the $20 ticket, then his wife scanned it on her lottery app, he told lottery officials.
'When $1 million came up on the screen, I felt like I couldn't breathe! I thought it was some sort of prank at first. Once I realized it was real, I put the ticket in a jar and buried it in the yard because I was so paranoid something would happen to it if I kept it in the house,' he said.
The man chose to receive a one-time lump sum payment of about $634,000, instead of annuity payments for the full amount.
He said he 'plans to pay bills, pay off his home, and save for retirement.'
Paw Paw is about a 60-mile drive southwest of Grand Rapids.

Detroit man thought he was pranked, wins $25K a year for life on Michigan Lottery prize

A Detroit man thought he was the victim of a prank after checking his Michigan Lottery account and seeing that a $25,000 a year for life prize was pending. Micale Garland, 64, matched the five white balls in the Lucky For Life drawing on April 28: 16-19-20-33-40. "I have been playing Lucky For Life for a few years and I always buy my tickets online," said Garland in a news release. "When I saw the email from the Lottery about claiming a prize, I logged into my account and thought I was being pranked when I saw my account balance. It wasn't until I called the Lottery and confirmed the prize with them that I believed I'd really won. It still feels like I'm living in a dream!" Instead of taking $25,000 a year for life, Garland chose to receive his winnings as a one-time lump sum payment of $390,000. With his winnings, Garland plans to take a trip and then save the rest. Lucky For Life tickets are $2 per play and allow players the chance to win prizes ranging from $3 to cash for life. Players can win $1,000 a day for life by matching all five winning numbers ranging from 1 to 48 and one Lucky Ball ranging from 1 to 18. Players can win $25,000 a year for life by matching all five winning numbers but not the Lucky Ball. Drawings take place seven days a week at 10:38 p.m.

Michigan man makes random pick, wins $300K jackpot on scratch-off ticket

A Lenawee County man is $300,000 richer after winning a jackpot playing the Michigan Lottery's Safe Cracker Cashword instant game. The 58-year-old man, who wishes to remain anonymous, bought the winning ticket at Busch's, located at 1450 West Chicago Boulevard in Tecumseh. "I play all of the different instant games, so Safe Cracker Cashword just happened to be the game I randomly picked out that day while I was at the store," said the player in a news release. "I scratched the barcode, scanned the ticket, and got a message to file a claim at the Lottery office, so that's when I went through and played the game. "I couldn't believe it when I revealed 10 words for a $300,000 prize! It was a great feeling." The man plans to invest his winnings. Since the game launched in December 2024, players have won more than $14 million playing Safe Cracker Cashword, according to the Michigan Lottery. Each $5 ticket affords players the chance to win prizes ranging from $5 up to $300,000. More than $12 million in prizes remain up for grabs, including a pair of $300,000 jackpots.
